2. What is a Project?
• A Project is a temporary endeavor undertaken
to create a unique Product, Service or Result.
• Characteristics of Project
– Definitive start and end date
– Result in some specific benefits
– Progressively elaborated (which is to say, they are
produced in an iterative fashion).
4. PMBOK® in a nutshell
• Processes - are activities conducted by project
manager to manage various aspects of project
• Process Groups - a way of grouping processes
specific to each logical phase of a project, such as
Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and
Controlling, and Closing.
• Knowledge Areas - a way of grouping these same
processes based on the knowledge required to
carry them out, such as Cost management,
Human Resources management, and
Communications management.

Project manager primarily needs to have the
following -

– What do you know about your job...
• Performance (application of knowledge)
