I had just began to learn French for my high school language requirement, and our teacher told us about an exchange trip we could apply to participate in, where we would be matched up with a student from France who was roughly the same age as us and we would spend four weeks living together (two weeks in our home and two weeks in theirs). I chose to apply, with no clue what a huge impression such an experience would have on my life. I was accepted into the program, and was matched with a girl named Aline, who was exactly two days older than me and lived in Strasbourg, the largest city in Alsace. We exchanged emails for a few months, and in February of 2012 she and her...show more content...Just having Aline stay with my family for that short time taught me so much more about human nature and the importance and difficulties of cross cultural communication than I had ever learned in school. In June, I flew with eleven other kids from my high school to Alsace, and got to live with Aline s family in Strasbourg for two weeks. The impact that the trip had on me is indescribable. Through the immersion in both French and Alsatian culture, I began to grasp for the first time both how small and how very large the world is. I had never spent so much time thinking about the way life was for other people, and found that once I began thinking about it I couldn t stop; I learned so much about intercultural communication and exchange over those couple weeks, and I developed a thirst for travel that I had never had before. I came back from the trip with a new perspective on life, and began thinking a lot
