While the abovenormal monsoon has brought cheer to the capital, it has led to a
spurt in mosquito breeding and resultant diseases. Doctors said apart from 180
dengue-related incidents, chikungunya cases were also pouring in.
The viral illness is caused by Aedes mosquito, which also spreads dengue.
Symptoms include fever and joint pain. Dr Navin Dang, senior advisor, Association
of Practicing Pathologists of India, said: “Chikungunya has spread like an epidemic
this year. The statistics, however, don't reflect the same as only a few labshospitals
have the facility to diagnose it.“
Dr K K Aggarwal, secretary general, Indian Medical Association, concurred that the
situation was alarming. “We have issued dos and don'ts for both doctors and the
public,“ he said. What separates chikungunya from other viral illnesses is the acute
pain in joints. “We have seen youngsters coming in wheelchairs as they can't take
the joint pain. Chikungunya may not be deadly , but it is definitely debilitating,“ said
Dr Manisha Arora, senior consultant (internal medicine), Sri Balaji Action Medical
Institute, Punjabi Bagh.

The hospital, she added, was getting close to 10 such patients daily . At Max
Hospital, Saket, doctors said 50% of the patients visiting medicine OPD came
with chikungunya-like symptoms. “Almost 80% of these patients are found
positive for the disease,“ Dr Rommel Tickoo, senior consultant, internal
medicine.
“The only difference between treating chikungunya and dengue is that, while
in the former, the use of nonsteroidal ant-inflammatory drugs is warranted,
it is to tally unadvisable in the latter. So, we also have to first rule out dengue
before a patient can be given painkillers because paracetamol often fails to
relieve the symptoms,“ said Dr Tickoo.
The incubation period of chikungunya is usually between two and 10 days
and it mostly affects the young. In India, the first outbreak of this mosquito-
borne disease was documented in Kolkata in 1963.
