In this context, it should come as no surprise that the municipal corporations
claimed on Monday that no death took place in the city over the past week
due to dengue even as multiple deaths were being reported by various city
hospitals.
The corporations claim only 17 people have died due to dengue this season
when AIIMS, Safdarjung, Ram Manohar Lohia, Lok Nayak, Sir Ganga Ram and
St Stephen's Hospital alone have reported more deaths than the numbers
being put forward by civic bodies for the whole city.
The discrepancy in municipal corporation data is bigger in the case of
malaria, another mosquito-borne disease. In 2014, the civic body claims only
65 people were confirmed positive for malaria in the city. But the data based
on death registration shows 160 people died due to malaria in Delhi in 2014.
A total of 2,448 people died due to malaria in Delhi from 2010 to 2014,
shows the death registration data.

While the civic body have not released any data on death due to
malaria in the corresponding period, they claim only 940 people were
confirmed positive for the mosquito-borne disease from 2010 to 2014.
The yawning gap between the two sets of figures makes a mockery of
any planning to combat these diseases. In the case of malaria in
particular, there isn't even the kind of public and media attention that
dengue gets for a few months each year.
A senior official of one of the municipal corporations claimed that the
death registration data collated by the state health department relies
upon the certificate issued by hospitals. “We, however, look into details
such as whether the patient was confirmed positive through
government-approved tests,“ he claimed. Brought to you by

“The corporations downplay the dengue figures to hide their own
failure to contain mosquito-breeding. Detailed investigation should be
conducted to verify this,“ said a senior doctor at AIIMS.
He said exact data collection is important to analyse the incidence rate
and key areas, which require preventive measures. “The official data is
not at all consistent with the prevailing situation. This year, there is an
outbreak situation but the civic bodies claim only 6,000 people have
been affected,“ said another doctor.
