The `one rank, one pension' (OROP) controversy flared up further on
Monday after one of the exservicemen on hunger strike being rushed to the
hospital.Colonel (retd) Pushpendra Singh, who was on a hunger strike for the
past eight days demanding the implementation of OROP , was rushed to the
Army Research and Referral Hospital after his ketone levels shot up. The 62-
year-old retired officer from 3 Grenadiers has seen active duty in both
northeast and Kashmir in counter-insurgency operations.
The doctor who examined Col Singh recommended that he be immediately
shifted to hospital. Col Singh was “reluctant but we persuaded him,“ Major
General Satbir Singh, chairman of the Indian ex-servicemen Movement said.
Colonel Singh said he will continue his hunger strike in the hospital. “My
message for government is OROP should be implemented as soon as
possible,“ Col Singh said.

Two ex-servicemen, Col Singh and Hawaldar Major Singh, began hunger
strike at Jantar Mantar on August 16, demanding implementation of
OROP . The move came after PM Narendra Modi failed to announce
OROP in his Independence Day speech from Red Fort. While assuring
its implementation, Modi had said that decision on OROP would be
taken soon. Another ex-serviceman Havildar Saheb Singh took Col
Singh's place after he was taken to hospital and began hunger strike.
Two others -Havildar Major Singh and Havildar Ashok Chauhan -are
also on hunger strike now.
The dramatic developments of Monday came just a day after Mrinalini,
