The purpose of the assignment:
One of the maindutiesof an EFL teacher isto clarifythe meaning/use, grammaroperation,and
pronunciationof newlanguage itemsforlearners.Todothiseffectively,the teacherhasfirsttoanalyze the
language andto make use of grammar reference materials.Thisassignmentwill give youpractice withthe
approach to language analysisthatyouwill needtouse whenplanninglanguage focuslessonsinTP.

 Assume youare presentingthe itemstoaLow IntermediateLevelclass.
 You will needtouse a grammar reference,suchasMichael Swan’s PracticalEnglish Usageor
RaymondMurphy’s Grammarin Use. A learnerdictionarymayalsohelp.
 Complete the taskusingthe attachedworksheets.If youwrite byhand,please use inkandmake

Meaning:A pastaction or obligationthatdidnothappen.

Johnwas unemployed. Afterspendingalongtime lookingforajob,he wentfor a jobinterview ina
bank.Onthe day of the interview,he woke uplate,sohe wore jeansanda leatherjacket, andhe didn’t
shine hisshoesorshave.Laterthatday,the bank toldhimthat he hadn’tgot the job.
Johnwas disappointed,but he knewthatitwasprobablybecause of the waythat he looked. He should

Use : Itis usedto focusattentionon the objectof the action,whichisthe subjectof the passive verb. The
one that performsthe actionfollows“by”,but we maynot know know whoperformedthe action orwe do
not wantto say whoperformedthe action, thenitisnotmentioned(as in“mybicycle wasstolen”butI
don’tknowwhostole it). Onlytransitive verbs(verbsthatare followedbyanobject) are usedinthe
passive form.
