Everybody is talking about IoT and Smart Cities but what is really happening is a new creative revolution that will bring people and technology together to help cities sense, feel, think and express - with a bit of help from A.I. and humans, of course.
The Ultimate Guide to Choosing WordPress Pros and Cons
IoT the Smart Citizen and and the Sensitive City
1. IoT Living Lab: co-creating
the Sensitive City of the
Future

and more...

Basic Intro- HI I’m me and this is the IoT Living Lab we created with our partners, etc.
2. Tuesday, June 7, 16
Recently Amsterdam won the European Capital of Innovation Award and we are very proud to
be part of the innovation community here
3. Why IoT?
Tuesday, June 7, 16
If you belive what you read in industry reports you know the growth that IoT will bring to the
world economy but what we like to focus on is the value we can help deliver to cities and its
people
4. Tuesday, June 7, 16
Its not just about beacons, sensors and devices its about the data and related services that
will emerge from IoT enabled interactivity
5. Why an IoT Living Lab?
Tuesday, June 7, 16
Thats why we created the IoT Living Lab with the City of Amsterdam and started with the
Beacon Mile the first open LoRa beacon network in the world
6. Tuesday, June 7, 16
We knew that installing beacons in public spaces was interesting but what was really
interesting was creating Open IoT Networks that engages citizens in public spaces and
generates open data that enables developers to create next generation applications and IoT
interactivity across all verticals.
7. Tuesday, June 7, 16
Specifically we created a LoRa Managed beacon network with our partners at the Amsterdam
University of Applied sciences as part of phase 2 of the IoT Living Lab project to create
interactivity in the Oosterpark for the BAMBEA project - Beveging met Beacons in het Park
8. Tuesday, June 7, 16
Which in English means Moving with beacons in the park in order to enable apps that got
people out into the park and exercise more. We want to give the park a voice and reason to
speak to it’s visitors in ways that encourage them to be more active.
9. April 18 - Sense in the City
April 19-22 - Design & the City
April 23-24 - IoT Olympic Games II
WWW.IOTLIVINGLAB.COMTuesday, June 7, 16
We have also with the help of our partners held IoT Olympics games that give developers and
the maker community a playground in the city so they can use the network and co-create
smart city solutions with stakeholders from the city as well as private organisations
10. Tuesday, June 7, 16
The last IoT Olympics were held at the new Makerversity on the Marineterrein in April
and in less than 48 hours we had over 6 great proof of concepts like a keyless LoRa
lock, a bike sharing platform and water temperature and quality sensors for the
Amsterdam canals.
11. Smart Cities?
Tuesday, June 7, 16
We hear a lot about Smart Cities these days but what makes a Smart City? Smart Citizens of course,
it’s the people that solve the problems and innovate. Thats why we create IoT sense networks and put
them to the test with events like the IoT Olympics - Cities can’t be smart but they can be sensitive.
12. OR Sensitive Cities?
Tuesday, June 7, 16
We want to help cities engage with people in meaningful ways - giving cities IoT sense networks
creates an authentic dialogue and a platform for collaboration and co-development that creates real
value.
13. Tuesday, June 7, 16
Amsterdam is alive with activity - the activity of people. This is a great visualization of SMS messages
NewYears Eve 2007 and is shows how many messages are being generated - how much data and you
see the city pulsing with energy. The more data we can get people and the city to generate the more
we can see this relationship in action.
14. A Sensitive City
• Feels- has a sense network
• Is Open - open data, open APIs
• Remembers - data for predictive analytics
• Listens - platforms for social validation
• Interacts - platforms for civic engagement
• Shares - collaborates and is trustworthy
Tuesday, June 7, 16
So we have a vision of the Sensitive City - a city that cares and eventually will even have a personality.
In order to do this the city has too......(see list above) Feel, be open, remember, listen, interact, share
and be secure.
15. Tuesday, June 7, 16
With all this new sensitivity, interactivity and data the city and it’s IoT Neworks will need a brain. AI
like IBMsWatson, Google Prediction,Amazon Echo, the Siris of the future will become ways for our
cities to become intelligent but these are only processing platforms and they need us to help them
make value judgements
16. Tuesday, June 7, 16
Using human interactivity and social validation that feed values into cognitive algorithms we
can co-create cities we can trust, they will care about us, we will care about them and they
will become our friends, help us when and where it’s needed, give us and our leaders advise.
17. Tuesday, June 7, 16
In the future cities will be more like people, they will be able to think, feel and make
judgements. They will talk to each other. Amsterdam will talk to Paris and exchange
experiences and ideas they will be trusted advisors to the government but they will always
need the people to feed them values.
