YouTube TV vs Cable - VLOG #020
Traditionally the main difference between YouTube TV and Cable TV have been access to premium content. Large cable television networks such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon have all secured exclusive contracts with name brand networks protecting their product value. But Starting in 2010, paid television networks started to see quarterly the subscriber loses, the world of streaming video on the Internet has started to take over. While services such as Hulu, Netflix and SlingTV offer replacements for premium content, YouTube has been growing in popularity organically offering free on-demand and live streaming services.
Fast forward to 2015 and major networks such as HBO and Showtime are sidestepping traditional cable television distribution with their own direct to consumer online applications. Major premium networks are being forced to embrace the new generation of "cord-cutters". Wikipedia describes the term cord-cutters as "the pattern of viewers cancelling their subscriptions to multichannel subscription television services available over cable, dropping expensive pay television channels or reducing the number of hours of subscription TV viewed in response to competition from rival media available over the Internet, from Amazon.com, Hulu, iTunes, Netflix, and YouTube, as well as BitTorrent".
As cord-cutting continues, new growth on the YouTube platform is found in almost every conceivable genre. Organic content creation on the platform is uploaded at a rate of 300 hours per minute! The new live platform not only offers broadcasters a free content delivery network but multiple camera streaming (a feature we reviewed here). The “Live” YouTube channel is growing at a rate of two hundred thousand subscribers per month and to top it off premium content producers across the board such as the John Oliver show (HBO) are uploading their content to leverage Google’s massive viewership and ad revenue generation program!
It would seem to me that writing is on the wall for major cable television networks. This is a really good thing for small businesses! Not only can small businesses take advantage of YouTube from a marketing perspective but the entire industry is in for major growth through democratization.Video on Demand is a $25.30 Billion dollar market which is expected to grow to $61 Billion by 2020 (Market Study Here). This is going to create new jobs for businesses that can reap the benefits of brining video content creation in house. There will be opportunity across the most major verticals.
Essentially YouTube is allowing any business to participate in a new open television platform at a time when cable television is becoming increasingly less attractive for viewers and advertisers.
