Callaway Magazine: So what’s
the story behind the Mack Daddy
Grooves?
Roger Cleveland: This design, cer-
tainly, has brought a lot of spin and
enjoyment to a lot of people. Short game
is all about control. Phil Mickelson
came to us and said he wanted to have
the most aggressive groove allowable
under the Rules of Golf. We knew those
rules pretty well, but figured out a way
tomaximize the geometry of the groove,
and we built it. The result exceeded
even Phil’s expectations, especially the
first time he used it. He has an incred-
ible testing technique; there’s a little
30-yard shot that he hits from the top
of our Test Center over to the green. He
swings full, and he’s very powerful; he
swings right around 85 mph on a wedge
that goes 30 yards. When you have all
of those forces and that speed, you cre-
ate a tremendous amount of friction
and spin. So he looked down after he hit
the shot – the shot hit the green and
just ripped back across the green – and
there was a skid mark, like a tire track
of the golf ball, going up the clubface.
He left part of the ball on the grooves,
because the grooves were sharper than
he was normally used to. And he said
“That’s what I’m talking about; that’s my
Mack Daddy Groove.” And we said hey,
that’s cool, let’s use that. So that’s where
the name came from.
CM: Please explain Triple Net
Forging.
RC: Sure; to do that, let’s first talk about
the forging process versus casting.
Feel is so important in a wedge and car-
bon steel provides the best material to
satisfy this important ingredient. You
can cast carbon steel, it’s called 8620
and it’s about the same feel and hard-
ness as a 1020 forging, but it does not
employ our Triple Net Forging process,
which is when our billet of 1020 carbon
steel is heated and then forged under
extreme pressure. This is repeated two
more times. This ensures an extreme-
ly tight tolerance where consistency
of design is so important. This means
that less material is removed during
the finishing of an X Series JAWS Wedge
than a cast wedge, which is critical to
reproduce this exact sole geometry and
bounce specifications.
CM: Tell us about the C-Grind Sole.
RC: The name comes from the shape;
it looks like a C. The inspiration comes

the soles for our tour players, we no-
ticed that a lot of them were asking to
relieve the heel on their wedges. We
took this even further when we relieved
the toe as well. In addition, we reduced
the sole width, and also rounded the
heel and toe radius of the sole. What
this did was enable the leading edge to
go under the ball easier on all types of
shots from the rough, bad lies, bunkers,
etc. When you open the face of other
wedge designs, the leading edge comes
up as well, and that makes it difficult
to get the leading edge under the ball.
So when you relieve the heel, and your
first contact point is in the heel, you’re
able to slide under the ball better, with
more loft. There are different shots you
can hit, little shots, when you spend a
lot of time around the greens; you can
actually hit shots off the toe. (Editor’s
Note: Roger Cleveland spends a lot of
time around the green; he installed a
practice bunker in his back yard!) The
C-Grind makes for a very interesting
look and very effective design. We also
vary the bounce in the heel area; we
reduce it, versus the center, because
when you hit shots with a square face
you need the bounce on a full shot.
Around the greens, you’ll tend to open
it up a bit more. But you always want
to be using the sole of the wedge. Some
people have looked at our wedges and
toldmewehavetoomuchbounce.When
you have the combination of a narrow-
er sole and the C-Grind, it doesn’t play
like it has too much bounce, it actually
plays like it has much less. It’s terrible
for a wedge to not have enough bounce,
because then you tend to dig and you
lose confidence.
CM: We heard that you have a
secret for keeping your wedges
looking great, especially the new
Dark Vintage finish.
RC: I do! With the right material and a
bit of care and regular use, your wedge
will get a nice patina. My secret takes
off the rust and inhibits more rust, and
it makes it look really good. It’s called
Scotch-Brite; you use it to clean your
pots and pans. It’s a scouring pad. They
make it in different colors, but purple
is best for your wedge. So just cut a lit-
tle square of it to keep in your golf bag.
Every so often, take it and just rub it
over the club head in a circular motion
for a nice patina. It really keeps it look-
ing nice.
