CHILE JOINS OPEN GOVERNMENT
PARTNERSHIP
September of 2011, the Government of Chile joined the
Open Government Partnership (OGP), committing to
improve access to public and government activities and
information. This plan is intended to stimulate citizen
engagement through policies for greater transparency
and increasing levels of access to new technologies.
In early 2012, experts within the IT departments
concluded that the mission required greater internal
effort and development skills than they originally
expected. They decided instead to find a commercially
available system. Following careful evaluation of the
best open data platforms available, Chile selected
Junar to be their partner. The Junar system met all of
the expectations of the country's leaders and promised
that Chile would be amongst the first countries in the
region to create a healthy Open Data ecosystem.
MAKING OPEN DATA FAST AND EFFICIENT
In November 2012, the Junar portal was launch
containing not only links to files but also data views,
charts and dashboards that provided a positive user
experience for their visitors. Junar also provided a
specific API that enabled administrators to more
quickly and efficiently import datasets while insuring a
well managed publishing process.

2. The Director of Electronic Government also wanted to
make it as easy as possible for users to find data for
each of its agencies. Junar’s Open Data Platform
makes the implementation this type of filtering
straightforward as shown in the user’s view below.
WITHIN A FEW DAYS, A MAJOR FIELD
TEST
On the second week of November, only a few days
after the Junar-powered platform was launched, it
received its first major stress test. The government
sponsored its first hackathon – CodeandoxChile –
Coding for Chile. For 20 hours developers from
around the country used (and abused) the Junar API.
The hackathon was a total success with over 15 social
applications being developed for this event. This was
the first step into testing the readiness and awareness
of the developer community while helping establish
Chile as a regional leader in Open Data.
25 out of 77
countries is where Chile ranks on the
Open Data Barometer, topping Brazil
and Argentina, and co-leading the
Latin American region with Mexico.
