PROPOSALS
- St. Joana’s avenue is located in the
heart of the city of Aveiro, near the
historical center
- Along the lenght of it there are stores of
ocal commerce, small housing blocks,
a primary school and Aveiro’s
cathedral
- Traffic lanes are divided in by a garden
in the middle, sidewalk witdth varies
greatly and there is a paint delimited
cycle path
- From a mobility perspective it is a
major artery of the city: you have to
cross it to get to the the city center and
it connects both ends of Aveiro
- As traffic constitutes the defining factor
of the Avenida, it is designed extremly
pedestrian unfriendly
- Construction of the avenue demolished
buildings and divided the neighborhood

Connection
- The Av. Santa Joana (blue in the
picture on the right) is the most
direct and the fastest way
- Already the main route for the
students arriving by train
→ Needs to become safer for
bicycles and pedestrians
- Broaden sidewalks, bicycle paths
- Establish 30km zone
- Renewal of the bicycle pathway
- Establishment of a crosswalk instead of the
U-turn possibility
- Outdoor area for the cafe “A Mulata”
→ Easier possibility for pedestrians for
crossings
→ Use of the urban space to stay
2nd Proposal:
- Establishment of a new crosswalk
- Reduce the speed of cars
→ Create a safe atmosphere for pedestrians
especially for the students
→ New and faster possibility to cross the street
- Rehabilitation of the brownfield to
a new park area
- Possibiliy of an event-area
- Use of the hillside situation for
water and sitting arrangements
→ Create a green pedestrian friendly
environment, connection between
the Avenida Santa Joana and the
water channel
- Establishment of stairs at the bridge
- Use as a view point
→ Connection to the channel for
pedestrians
- Broaden the sidewalk on the one side of
the road
- Broaden the bicycle pathway on the
other side
- Reduce the speed of the cars
→ Create a safe atmosphere for
pedestrians and cyclist
