•	 Liverpool has a GVA (Gross Value Added) of
£13.7bn and the City Region as a whole has a
GVA of £28.3bn, making Liverpool/Birkenhead
a significant contributor to the UK economy at
large.
•	 Liverpool has been the site of hundreds of
millions of pounds of redevelopment in recent
years. Sites such as Liverpool ONE shopping
complex, the RopeWalks, the Lime Street
	 Gateway and the Commercial District (among
others) have added much value to the city. Much,
much more is anticipated in the coming years.
•	 Liverpool contains the UK’s most visited multi-
use tourist attraction outside of London – Albert
Dock.
•	 Liverpool is home to Europe’s oldest Chinatown,
and the biggest in the UK outside of London.

CITY REGION
•	 Halton is home to some of the most cutting edge
science research in the country, for instance the
facility at Sci-Tech Daresbury. (Liverpool City
Region Investment Guide 2016)
•	 Knowsley is the centre of advanced
manufacturing in the Liverpool region and is
home to large companies such as Jaguar Land
Rover, QVC and Matalan. Knowsley business park
is the most significant in the region.
	 Covering 1200 acres, more than 800 businesses
and 16,000 jobs call Knowsley business park

•	 Sefton is home to several multi-national
companies such as Fujitsu and Santander.

•	 The Wirral is a centre of offshore wind power,
nuclear power and tidal power. It’s strong ship
building history and expertise is being utilised
once again – Cammell Laird are building boats
again and have recently beaten companies
across the globe to win a £200m project building
a polar research vessel. (Liverpool City Region
Investment Guide 2016). The ‘Wirral Waters’
project is set to redevelop 25 miles of derelict
docks, bringing them up to spec for the 21st
century.

HOUSING
The average price of a house in Liverpool is £135,210 and the
average across the city region is £148,680, according to the
Centre for Cities. Various figured can be found from a number
of sources but those values seem to be the best average.
Average rent in the city is £707 PCM. The market in Liverpool
is growing in strength and will continue to become more
prosperous as the city does.
In addition, the very strong student market and high rates of
student retention following graduation ensure a healthy
churn of renters in the city.
Liverpool is particularly strong when it comes to student
accommodation. The quality of the accommodation is high
and there is a good quantity of it, so much in fact that local
news articles have begun to appear saying that there may
even be an excess.
EMPLOYMENT
The employment rate in the city stands at 60.5%, which is
not as high as it could be, however the upcoming massive
investments planned for the city should help to change this.
The ‘Liverpool Waters’ project, along with the ‘Wirral Waters’
project on the opposite bank of the Mersey, should provide
thousands of local people with employment.
The city region has a slightly higher overall employment rate
of 66.4% but this also leaves room for improvement compared
to other metropolitan areas surrounding Manchester,
Sheffield and Leeds.
The average wage per week stands at £482.10 in the city and
£465.00 in the wider region. This compares well with Sheffield,
Leeds and Manchester.
INFRASTRUCTURE
•	 National rail – Liverpool is linked to the rest of the country
via train. It takes two hours to get to London, one hour to
reach Manchester, just under two hours to reach Sheffield,
around one and a half hours to reach Leeds and three
hours to reach Newcastle.
•	 Liverpool John Lennon Airport – This is an international
airport which connects Liverpool to the world. Liverpool
is also within close reach of Manchester Airport, another
international hub. In addition, the following are also either
confirmed or possible at some point in the future:
• 	 HS2 – Liverpool will not benefit directly from the first
phase of HS2 as that is scheduled to terminate in
Manchester. However the city will benefit indirectly as
the North West as a whole is opened up and becomes
even more of a major player than it already is. Plans are
being formed to hook Liverpool up to the line as part of a
second phase. Liverpool is a city in the North West and the
heart of the Liverpool/Birkenhead metropolitan borough
which directly abuts Greater Manchester on one side and
the Irish Sea on the other. The city itself is the sixth most
populous in the UK.
•	 Liverpool Lime Street – Plans for a £35m regeneration of
the station and the area around it are expected to get the
official go ahead soon.
•	 Transport for the North – As part of the ‘Northern
Powerhouse’, Liverpool will benefit from improved
transport across the region. The current links between
the core Northern cities are substandard and the city
will benefit from the proposed trans-Pennines links,
the speculative idea to link the North East to the rest of
the country more substantially than it currently is and
especially by connecting the Western and Eastern ports.
•	 Atlantic Gateway – £50bn invested in 50 developments
over the next 50 years in order to re-establish Liverpool as
the UK’s premier shipping destination. The most imminent
projects are the new deepwater port, Liverpool2, and the
Liverpool Waters’ programme. The new cruise liner port
and passport control etc planned will open up another
avenue for international tourists to visit Liverpool. It is
envisaged that the ‘Liverpool Waters’ development will
create 17,000 jobs and 21 million square feet of commercial
and residential space including 23,000 apartments and
four hotels.

LIVERPOOL CITY REGION • Halton is home to some of the most cutting edge science research in the country, for instance the facility at Sci-Tech Daresbury. (Liverpool City Region Investment Guide 2016) • Knowsley is the centre of advanced manufacturing in the Liverpool region and is home to large companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, QVC and Matalan. Knowsley business park is the most significant in the region. Covering 1200 acres, more than 800 businesses and 16,000 jobs call Knowsley business park home. LIVERPOOL HOUSING The average price of a house in Liverpool is £135,210 and the average across the city region is £148,680, according to the Centre for Cities. Various figured can be found from a number of sources but those values seem to be the best average. Average rent in the city is £707 PCM. The market in Liverpool is growing in strength and will continue to become more prosperous as the city does. In addition, the very strong student market and high rates of student retention following graduation ensure a healthy churn of renters in the city. Liverpool is particularly strong when it comes to student accommodation. The quality of the accommodation is high and there is a good quantity of it, so much in fact that local news articles have begun to appear saying that there may even be an excess. EMPLOYMENT The employment rate in the city stands at 60.5%, which is not as high as it could be, however the upcoming massive investments planned for the city should help to change this. The ‘Liverpool Waters’ project, along with the ‘Wirral Waters’ project on the opposite bank of the Mersey, should provide thousands of local people with employment. The city region has a slightly higher overall employment rate of 66.4% but this also leaves room for improvement compared to other metropolitan areas surrounding Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds. The average wage per week stands at £482.10 in the city and £465.00 in the wider region. This compares well with Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester. INFRASTRUCTURE • National rail – Liverpool is linked to the rest of the country via train. It takes two hours to get to London, one hour to reach Manchester, just under two hours to reach Sheffield, around one and a half hours to reach Leeds and three hours to reach Newcastle. • Liverpool John Lennon Airport – This is an international airport which connects Liverpool to the world. Liverpool is also within close reach of Manchester Airport, another international hub. In addition, the following are also either confirmed or possible at some point in the future: • HS2 – Liverpool will not benefit directly from the first phase of HS2 as that is scheduled to terminate in Manchester. However the city will benefit indirectly as the North West as a whole is opened up and becomes even more of a major player than it already is. Plans are being formed to hook Liverpool up to the line as part of a second phase. The current links between the core Northern cities are substandard and the city will benefit from the proposed trans-Pennines links, the speculative idea to link the North East to the rest of the country more substantially than it currently is and especially by connecting the Western and Eastern ports. • Atlantic Gateway – £50bn invested in 50 developments over the next 50 years in order to re-establish Liverpool as the UK’s premier shipping destination. The most imminent projects are the new deepwater port, Liverpool2, and the Liverpool Waters’ programme. The new cruise liner port and passport control etc planned will open up another avenue for international tourists to visit Liverpool. It is envisaged that the ‘Liverpool Waters’ development will create 17,000 jobs and 21 million square feet of commercial and residential space including 23,000 apartments and four hotels.
