This presentation describes the cylindrical grinding process and types of operations and machines in this process, which is why useful topic B.Tech mechanical of fourth sem students. This explains about the overview on the external cylindrical grinding process.
2. CONTEXT
• Introduction to cylindrical grinding
• Types of operations
1.Traverse grinding
2.Plunge grinding
• Types of cylindrical grinding machine
1.Plain centre type cylindrical grinding machine
2.Centre type universal grinder

3. CYLINDRICAL GRINDING
• The principle of cylindrical grinder is that
the work piece is held between the centers.
It is rotated by a dog and a face plate and
the rotating grinding wheel is feed against
it.

6. TYPES OF OPERATIONS
Two types of operations are carried out
1.Traverse grinding
2.Plunge grinding
Work piece type
Cylindrical surfaces may be straight, curved.

7. TRAVERSE GRINDING
This method is used when the job length is more than work piece is lesser than
the width the grinding wheel. The wheel is made to rotate in a fixed position. The
rotating work made to traverse. The grinding is done by giving longitudinal feed to the
grinding wheel.
7
8. PLUNGE GRINDING
This method is used when the length of the work piece is lesser than the width
of the grinding wheel. The grinding is done by giving only cross feed to the grinding
wheel. This is known as plunge grinding.

9. TYPES OF CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE
This machine is used to produce external cylindrical surface. The surfaces
may be straight, tapered, steps or profiled. Broadly there are two different types of
cylindrical grinding machine as follows:
1.Plain centre type cylindrical grinder
2.Centre type universal grinder
9
10. PLAIN CENTRE TYPE CYLINDRICAL GRINDER
The machine is similar to a centre lathe in many respects. The
workpiece is held between head stock and tailstock centres. A disc type
grinding wheel performs the grinding action with its peripheral surface. Both
traverse and plunge grinding can be carried out in this machine.
The grinding machine consists of various parts
1.Base
2.Table
3.Head stock
4.Tail stock
5.Wheel head

12. CENTRE TYPE UNIVERSAL GRINDER
Centre type universal grinders are widely used in tool room for grinding tools.

13. The features of this machine are similar to those of plain grinders but it
addition, it is provided with the following features.
1.The centre of the head stock spindle can be used as alive or dead. The work can be
held and revolved by a chuck.
2.The wheel head can be swiveled in a horizontal plane in any angle and it can be fed
in the inclined direction also.
3.The headstock can be swiveled to any angle in the horizontal plane.
4.The wheel head can also be arranged for internal grinding.
