Excerpt from Chapter One
Mia sat at a small table by the window, her face hidden behind the assigned reading for her
English literature class. She looked at the words printed on the page before her, but did not read them.
The book was her excuse for being in a coffee shop and not in her bedroom, as her mother expected.
But it was also a shield—a pretense to discourage conversation. It wasn’t conversation but noise that
she wanted.
Lately, “conversation” was really code for something else entirely. With her mother, it actually
meant talking at her rather than to her. With Ella, it meant talking around the one thing neither of them
could bring themselves to talk about directly. Worse when the three of them were not pretending to
have conversations, they simply weren’t talking at all, leaving the house to fill up with silence and the
growing number of boxes full of their belongings. Mia needed an escape, even if just for a few hours.
She shifted her book to one hand, so she could get a handle on her mug. As she sipped her now
lukewarm peppermint tea, she decided to people-watch and glanced over at the table next to her. A
guy and a girl were studying. Mia guessed college students from their clothing. The guy alternated
between looking down at his notes and typing on a laptop. The girl pressed the cap of a ballpoint pen
against her chin as she read and flipped through the pages of a textbook. Absorbed in their own work,
they did not say anything to each other. Mia wondered if they were a couple, but they didn’t seem to
show any of the signs of affection that couples do. Perhaps they were only friends. Or maybe they
were a couple after all and had inexplicably grown distant. Watching them sit, seemingly oblivious of
each other’s presence, suddenly made her think of her mother. How lonely Mom must feel, Mia
thought, now that her husband is gone. A lump rose in her throat and she decided to look away.
