Second
Saturday
Prioritizing Couple Time
February 13, 10-11:30am at FEAST
Join us for nuggets of wisdom from the experiences of veteran
home schoolers, Rick and Miriam St. Pierre as well as some laughs
and inspiration from Paul and Jeanette Watje as they are still in
the daily life of home schooling.
• Are you discouraged?
• What does God desire for you?
• What is God doing in your most difficult situation?
• What are you focusing on relationally?
• Are there idols in your home?
• What is your most hopeless problem?
• What obstacles keep you from prioritizing couple time?
These and other questions will be addressed. What does it mean to love as God does-unconditionally? This is
where our hope lies, not in the performance of our spouse or children. Take your eyes off of what, or who, you
think needs to be fixed. You, your marriage, your children, your spiritual walk, will be challenged and edified by
this enlightening Second Saturday seminar! Sign up here!
Rick & Miriam St. Pierre will soon celebrate their 40th anniver-
sary. (And, as Rick would say, they have been happily married
for 13 years.) They have five children, three of whom are mar-
ried. In March, their third grandchild will be born! Next
summer they will have home schooled for 30 years. Rick &
Miriam have been moved by God to minister to couples in the
same way God has ministered to them. Don't come to hear
three points and a poem, or even the five things you must DO
to be happily married or to successfully home school. Come to
be encouraged that "He is able to keep that which I have com-
mitted unto Him against that Day." II Timothy 1:12
Paul and Jeanette Watje
just celebrated their 24th
anniversary. They spent
nine years in the world, were saved in 1999, and have been living for the
Lord while learning to be Christ-like to each other and are best friends.
With 10 children, their house is always in motion. They are known for
being a bit more adventurous than most, taking cross country road trips,
planning family gatherings, women's retreats, and various events to laugh
and have fun. They hope to encourage you to seek God and His will for
your family, having Christ as your example.

The Battle of the Alamo (Feb-
ruary 23 – March 6, 1836) was a
pivotal event in the Texas Revo-
lution. Following a 13-day
siege, Mexican troops under
President General Antonio
López de Santa Anna launched
an assault on the Alamo Mission
near San Antonio de Béxar
(modern-day San Antonio,
Texas, United States), killing all
of the Texian defenders. Santa
Anna's cruelty during the battle
inspired many Texians—both
Texas settlers and adventurers
from the United States—to join
the Texian Army. Buoyed by a
desire for revenge, the Texians
defeated the Mexican Army at
the Battle of San Jacinto, on
April 21, 1836, ending the revo-
lution.

The National Geographic Bee
of 2016 was held at FEAST on
January 15. The Bee is run by
the National Geographic Soci-
ety and has local, state and
national tournaments. It is for
4th-8th graders.
There were 13 anxious contestants who settled their nerves
after making it through the first round! Many parents and
siblings were on hand to watch. The 3rd place winner was
David He-slop, 2nd place was Alexander Maganda and the
first place winner, who was in the GeoBee for his first time was
8th grader Jamin McGhee. When asked how he prepared for
the Bee, Jamin said that he took many of the on-line quizzes
on the National Geographic Bee website as well as other
studying. Jamin will be taking a written test to see if he qualifies for the State Bee in April.
Many congratulations to all the contestants who came and shared their knowledge of the world that the Lord
has made. A special thank you to Erin Butts, a high school junior, who read the questions provided by the
National Geographic Society, and also to, Sue Berry as our moderator.
If you wish you had been in the Bee but didn't know about it, check the Manna in October or November next
year when we will have a date for the 2017 Geo Bee. In the meantime, keep up with current events, color a map,

Special Needs Evaluations
Our last article talked about the big picture of Learning Disabilities. This month we will delve into evaluations for
special needs students. Let’s say you suspect your child has learning struggles or that there is something unique
going on that you just can’t seem to put your finger on, but it concerns you. Or perhaps you have well-meaning
friends, family or teachers suggesting that your child needs additional support to succeed academically or in their
daily functioning. How do you know when to seek help, where to seek help and what you need to consider? These
are the first questions that PIERS (Partners In Educations and Resource Support) usually is asked each year.
Does Your Child Need an Evaluation?
Evaluations for learning disabilities are often over encouraged and are not always needed. They can, also, be expen-
sive and complex. However, if your child happens to have a serious learning impediment, emotional impairment
and/or a mental health condition I believe it is worth the investment and consideration for your child’s quality of life.
How do you know if your child needs an evaluation? If the difficulties you observe pose a significant and substantial
impediment to your child’s emotional, intellectual, academic, physical and or daily function, your child may benefit
from an evaluation. For example, if by the age of six to seven your child continues to demonstrate substantial diffi-
culty learning to read— despite consistent traditional reading instruction —an evaluation might be necessary to
eliminate further delay or frustration for the child. Another sign that may warrant an evaluation: you notice greater
difficulties or struggles as your child moves into third or fourth grade levels of education, where work requirements
are more demanding. Many specialists feel prompt intervention in the earlier developmental years before ages six
to seven is more successful.
Big Benefits of an Evaluation
A proper evaluation has immense benefits for your child’s development and edu-
cation, serving as a catalyst to help you plan reasonable goals and assist you in
methods to teach your child better. Evaluations can open up avenues for resourc-
es to help with greater support that might be needed in their future academic goals or daily functioning. It can edu-
cate and equip the parent and child to better manage and overcome challenges. (Remember, it is tough to over-
come that which we do not understand.) Accurate evaluations also stimulate our child’s emotional, physical and
mental self-awareness of what is going on in their bodies, and it promotes self-discipline and self-regulation skills.
In light of the discussion regarding the seeming over diagnosis and treatment of attention difficulties, I want to add
a strong word of caution regarding evaluating attention difficulties
(ADD/ADHD). Attention difficulties can be very difficult to diagnose and are
open to varied interpretations even amongst professionals. What may be an
attention problem to one person or specialist is not to another. As I mentioned,
auditory and visual issues can look like attention difficulties. Other contributing
factors that look like ADD/ADHD are sleep disorders, anxiety, boredom or Senso-
ry Processing Disorders. Great attention to detail and thoroughness that consid-
ers all of these possibilities should be considered when seeking evaluation for
attention difficulties.
If you do choose to evaluate your child, he or she should be reevaluated continu-
ally every 3-4 years, as a significant amount of ADD/ADHD symptoms are
outgrown with age and maturity. Attention difficulties are one of the greatest
areas of concern that I hear among parents who home school.
Kaylene Karras is a home school mother dedicated to supporting families in their
home school journey. Join her at the Smoothing the Way support group for home
school moms, or the Partners In Education Resources and Support meeting on the
second Tuesday of each month. More information here.

From Your Athletic Director
It has been a relatively mild winter, which invites us to get out and
enjoy the wealth of sports opportunities FEAST offers to our families.
Our new golf program has kicked off with programs both for middle
school players in the ISAL league, as well as a new high school
program. Both programs are getting instruction from our new golf
partners at the “First Tee.” We are very excited about this partnership
with the First Tee and hope and pray that this is a long term relation-
ship. Thanks to our new golf Commissioner Mrs. Cindy Seward who
worked hard to put this all together.
Basketball is in its last few weeks of its season with multiple teams set
to go to state and national tournaments in the next 6-weeks. We have
several teams who are enjoying incredibly successful seasons. At this
writing, our boy’s varsity team has a record of 21 wins and 3 losses and
our boy’s junior varsity has a record of 21 wins and only 2 losses. Pray
for Commissioner Scott Reimer and his wife Sara as he completes this
basketball season diligently acing as commissioner even though he has a new employment project which
makes him work in St. Louis most days of the week.
High School Soccer is in the last few weeks of their season.Track and Field and baseball have both started their
practices for their respective seasons. Baseball is the capable hands of Commissioner Susan Rutherford who
returns as our baseball Commissioner for a second season. As usual, there are a huge number of registrations
for track and field. This is one of our most popular programs, so ably put together by Commissioner David
Dunn.
As always there is a wealth of sports opportunities for your kids and families to be a part of, excel at and enjoy
at FEAST. We hope your family has found one or more to participate behind.

team recently had an opportunity to test their skills at a double-header
scrimmage on January 16th. There was some good baseball played by
the boys, and their coaches are excited about this season’s prospects.
February has the boys playing a full schedule starting on the 2nd
against St. Anthony. Come out and support your Patriots Varsity Base-
ball team!
