In today's economy where the fast eats the slow, startups and established companies cannot afford the luxury of long cycles for Product Innovation Testing (PIT). This observation applies to new (innovative) products as well as established (legacy/improvement) products. It's no surprise that tools and processes, which inherently involve long PIT cycles, such as Traditional or Waterfall Business Planning are getting out of favor especially in startups. The idea of testing a product with users after writing a business plan is therefore becoming obsolete.
There are newer tools such as the Business Model Canvas and Lean Canvas for testing new ideas. But, these newer tools do not focus on a "product" as unit of analysis. Rather, the Business Model Canvas and Lean Canvas consider a "business model" as unit of analysis. The more recent Value Proposition Canvas addresses this deficit by focusing on and zooming in to two building blocks of the Business Model Canvas: Value Proposition and Customer Segment. However, the process for using the Value Proposition Canvas lacks the rigor and depth of Google Ventures' (GV) process of 5-Day Design Sprint.
Authored by Jake Knapp, John Zeratsky, and Braden Kowitz, the book "Sprint" presents a comprehensive process of testing new ideas in five days. To date, GV's Design Sprint is the best description that I've seen for comprehensive and rapid Product Innovation Testing (PIT). Although the authors of "Sprint" provide many checklists for facilitating the Design Sprint process, the checklists are textual and devoid of direct links to the unit of a business model (engine). In short, the checklists of GV's Design Sprint are not organized according to the building blocks of a business model (engine).
In this presentation, the Design Sprint (DS) Map is introduced as a tool or platform for visually collecting, organizing, selecting, and testing ideas especially for product innovations. In the Design Sprint Map, the OPSE Map is presented as a visual information organizer that is structured around the components of a scene as well as of a business model engine. Consequently, the DS Map eliminates the trade-off of a traditional business plan as well as Business Model Canvas and Lean Canvas. Since the Design Sprint Canvas is also scene or event-driven like in a project (activity), it can be used to manage ideas for each phase of GV's Design Sprint: 1) Understand 2) Diverge 3) Decide 4) Prototype 5) Validate. This presentation covers preparation for all five events.
