3. LOGOS• “Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow
we stand today, signed the Emancipation proclamation.”.
• ''One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled
by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination”.
• “When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of
the Constitution, They were singing a promissory note that all men,
yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed to the
"Unalienable Rights of Life, Liberty, and Happiness “.

4. ETHOS
• “We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of
the fierce urgency of Now”.- Lincoln memorial
• “When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words
of the Constitution and the declaration of independence, They
were singing a promissory note that all men, yes black men as well
as white men, would be guaranteed to the "Unalienable Rights of
Life, Liberty, and Happiness”.
• “Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow

5. PATHOS
• Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro a bad
check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds”.
• Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the
solid rock of brotherhood.
• "There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted
his citizenship rights” – Hard work for their rights.

• Authority (Credibility)- Lincoln, Constitution
• Liking -Similarity, Mutual Goals
• Social proof- suffering of African-American people
CONCLUSION
In conclusion out of all persuasive techniques , Pathos was the most effective because
King uses it to explain how much pain an African-American has been through, which
pulls people into hearing what he has to say and agreeing with it.
