Even though carefully planned user research will always deliver the best insights, expense constraints often result in no research at all and your product is in danger of merely being defined by its underlying business goals. We want to share with you how rapid research techniques help us to quickly introduce a user perspective to our projects with minimal effort.

Case study – Segway
2019
Segways are rarely
used, except by
the occasional
police man or
tourist group.
1999
Segway set out
to revolutionize
the future of
personal
transportation.
13
14. 14Rapid Research | UX Camp Amsterdam | June 1st 2019 |SinnerSchrader
Why did the Segway fail?
No concern for the established system
Cars drive on roads, pedestrians walk on the sidewalk.
Where would the Segway go?
No perspective
Cars park in special zones bikes go on racks. Where would
you store your Segway before and after jour journey?
No context
People need to transport their groceries or commute 20
miles to work. The Segway can not do any of that.

When you design based
on assumptions, you risk
those assumptions
being wrong.

Adding the user perspective early on helps you to minimize those risks.

Research does not have
to be complicated.
Leaving the office for a couple of hours equipped
with a pen, paper and some stickers is enough to
return with a rich set of new insights.
24. 24Rapid Research | UX Camp Amsterdam | June 1st 2019 |SinnerSchrader
Research does not have
to be expensive.
Make use of what is already there. Meeting people
in their authentic contexts also enables you to talk
to people that might otherwise be really hard to
recruit anyway.
25. 26Rapid Research | UX Camp Amsterdam | June 1st 2019 |
Don’t get us wrong!In-depthresearch
will always deliver the bestinsights.
If that is not possible, try a rapid
approach.

28. Understanding E-Mobility
from its pioneers

Case 1
How we learned about everything connected to E-Mobility by
visiting a local club meeting.

29. How can we understand the daily routines,
frustrations & motivations of e-car owners,
connected to charging?

We talked to attendees of a public e-car
meeting, where drivers from all over Germany
came together to exchange about all topics
connected to their lives with e-mobility.

We directly approached tenants in the waiting
room of the service center as well as the
service employees and asked them about
their motivations, problems or other reasons
for visiting the service center that day.

40. > Generative Dialogue
On a list we had prepared beforehand, people were asked to mark the most
important topics and issues. This at the same times provided a conversation
starter that directly got the people into the topic.

42. 43Rapid Research | UX Camp Amsterdam | June 1st 2019 |SinnerSchrader
We invited five colleagues to test the
prototype in 20 minutes and
gathered valuable feedback to the
concept & design of the first Sprint.
It is now presented to the client and
stakeholders and will influence
further iterations.
Testing internally.
43. > Rapid UseLab
A rapid UseLab enables your team to quickly get insights and get a first feeling of
where your product is heading.
It is easily setup: prepare a prototype with up to three tasks, invite five collegues,
to test, have someone guide through the interview and 2 people to take notes.
Audi | Charging Services | January 2019 | 44SinnerSchrader
44. > RapidRemote-Testing
We validated our mobile prototype within one of our speed-testing events, using the
so called „laptop hugging method“ an approach that allows for very easy mobile
device testing (even remote if necessary) and works really well.
