A recap of iPRES 2014 for New Zealand's Digital Preservation Practical Implementer Guild. A top 10 of highlights from the recent conference, 6 October to 10 October.
2. 10. The Attendees
• Different perspectives
• Discussion, passion, lots of ‘geeking’ out…
• Attendees from universities, many Australian government
organisations and libraries
• Free workshops promoted attendance of new interested
parties.
• Many familiar faces… Not enough diversity, people missing
• Can iPRES in future support those that couldn’t make it?
3. 9. Duff Johnson @DuffJohnson
• One of the final workshops!
• PDF Association Executive Director
• Full overview of PDF/A specifications
• Looking for attendees to influence shape of future
specifications
• BUT!!
• Nearly everyone had gone home…
• But that did result in a very rewarding discussion amongst
interested few…
4. 8. NLA: Migration Registry
• Getting on with it
• Not waiting for über solution
• Pragmatic
• Concerns – Still holding cards tight to chest
• Open it up! Make it available!
• Need a community environment safe, and secure to support
that…
• What are NLA’s concerns?
6. 6. Occam’s Razor and File Format
Endangerment Factors
• Presentation from Heather Ryan – University of Denver
• Simple
• Statistical
• Study of factors that cause obsolescence format
endangerment
• Summary: Rendering Software, Specifications, Community/3rd
Party Support.
• Easily one of the top papers I saw, lots of further potential.
7. 5. Tools that just work… @digitalfay
• Panel discussion mid-conference
• Good discussion in the room about what we need to make
tools work.
• OPF providing lots of help, packaging guidelines, tool support
• Similar issues for attendees of panel
• Still need environments that support production quality code
in GLAM institutions.
• Evidence-based solutions! *fist pump*
• Transparency, openness of tools/repositories
8. 4. ICA AtoM / Archivematica
• Excellent visibility, demos, across conference.
• Catalogue, Repository.
• Willingness to engage with audience, take feedback post-conference.
• Active on Twitter – listening!
• Setting an example, e.g. engaging with PRONOM!
• My view: A possible next evolution of systems, not just an
SDB, or Rosetta, but the next generation.
• Online demos available.
9. 3. Repository Showcase
• Opportunity to ‘grill’ vendors on what they provide
• Not just a glorified poster session
• Dspace, Archivematica, RODA, Preservica, Rosetta
• Standard test corpus provided by iPRES
• Q. Will it be provided online? Would be useful…
• Standard test to walk audience through…
• Some vendors better @ following script than others.
• Showcase needs to be improved next year – but should be
done again!
10. 2. Play-it-again Conference #BDCH14
• http://playitagainproject.org/conference/
• https://twitter.com/hashtag/bdch14
• Not just #digitalpreservation, content creators too, others.
• Digital preservation stream less complete due to lack of interest
• Needs more support from #digpres community
• #iPRES quite old-fashioned style
• Modern world; publish now! Blog!
• People holding back for iPRES.
11. 1. Twitter
• https://github.com/ross-spencer/rs-misc-scripts/
blob/master/ipres2014-tweets.csv

replies…
