Pencil / mousemat / baseball cap – on TRF Polio stands / merchants at Conventions Paul and I had been to
Needed things like this for clubs to use
Frustrated lack of availability of End Polio Now branded merchandise generally
Having spoken to both RI and RotaryGBI we decided to do something about it – to take action
Then DG Nigel Barnfield - loved the idea - totally supportive then and now - and a big help ever since.
Own club not understand why anyone would want to buy EPN branded merchandise
Though happy for us to create the End Polio Now Shop as a Guernsey registered charity on their behalf
Paul and I underwrite all risk and pay for the first £2,000 of stock.
We decided to go for it

Family, Self and generally everything else. They are usually humorous, sometimes serious, like Grand children getting a place at university or new arrivals in the family, but sometimes from one Rotarian about how many ducklings he has on his lake at home. Rotary often gets a mention , like successfully building an Eco-greenhouse, but they are usually the former, about Family, Self and even successful outcomes from hospital visits, like cancer in remission.
The individual telling the story donates to the pig, usually only one pound , but if it is really good then he/she may decide that 5 or 10 pounds is worth it !! We do not limit the amount of donation, but we like a minimum of £1

I am Siebe Stellingwerff Beintema
Member of Rotary Club Voorhout
of D1600, the Netherlands

I will tell you about our fundraising for End Polio Now
Rotary has some 19.000 members in the Netherlands.
We have 495 Clubs in 7 Districts, D1550 to D1610
A National Polio Committee was established in 2008 between the 7 Districts and consists of one representative per District with a president, a secretary and an advisor. It started with the ‘Gates Challenge’ with the task to coordinate and stimulate fundraising for End Polio Now.
The National Polio Committee meets on regular intervals to discuss matters around the End Polio Now campaign. In their own District the members act as ‘knowledge center’ for the Governor, the club and the members. Their responsibility is to keep the mindset of the Rotarians positive regarding the fight to end polio.
In 2013, typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines. This disaster got very much attention and a fundraising event was held on national television.
The District Governors of our seven Districts decided to make funds available for this show and decided to bid for the namingrights of a new tulip-variety.
They gave this red and yellow tulip the name End Polio Now tulip.
This is now the official name for this flower.
Subsequently one of the Governors decided to start selling the tulip to raise funds for End Polio Now.
Later this project was adopted by District representatives in the National Polio Committee and the sales activities were advanced to a higher level.
A systematic approach to push Rotary Clubs to purchase the End Polio Now tulip was set up. This consists of mailings and other forms of promotion.
This is aimed at fundraising, but is also used to promote Rotary in the local communities,to improve the image of Rotary and to make Rotary attractive to new members.
In the past years we have sold some 47.000 boxes of each 25 bulbs.
And our team has the intention to continue till the world is officially declared free of polio.
On this slide you see the presentation box of the End Polio Now tulip, the tulips in the field of the grower and also in my garden.
Although the sales price of a box is only fifteen euro, together the result is impressive.
In a short period of time each year we make a nett profit of 120.000 euro.
Together with the multipiers of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Worldfund some 1,5 million euro is contributed to End Polio Now.
We find it important to promote this fundraising project.
Therefore we made the End Polio Now tulips available for the Evanston office.
And we organised a planting event in the world famous Keukenhof flowershow. Here you see District Governor Harriette Verwey, famous Dutch comedian Jörgen Raymann and Keukenhof Director Bart Siemerink planting the bulbs.
Of course this was picked up by the press and social media.
The following spring we visited the Keukenhof again, but now with Rotary exchange students who spent a year in the Netherlands.
The succes of every activity, thus also a fundraising project, is dependent on its organisation.
Therefore I will now talk a little about these aspects.
This activity requires a good organisation, based on the members of our National Polio Committee.
In each District we have one Tulip-person, who is
- in contact with the Governor and the Incoming Governor,
is contactpoint for Clubs in District,
actively promotes tulip sales in her/his District
and has regular contact with tulip-persons in other Districts
Not only the current District Governor is important, but also his successor, als the fundraising will take place in his or her year.
At the GETS in Nuremberg we met the Incoming Governors of the seven Netherlands Districts and made them partner in our End Polio Now tulip sales.
And we welcomed President-elect Mark Maloney in our small booth.
We have made a dedicated webshop for End Polio Now tulips: www.endpolionowtulp.nl
And our Netherlands Rotary Magazine often reminds the Rotarians about the project.
Important partners are of course
the tulip grower where the End Polio Now tulip grow and
the transport company that takes care of logistics
We run this fundraising as a yearly project.
That means that every year is has a start and an end. Basically that means from august to november.
During the year we have fixed dates at which an activity takes place:
PETS: provide information to incoming Club presidents
July: e-mail to new Club presidents that the Club secretary will get a snailmail mailing
August: snailmail mailing to Club secretary with letter, orderform and brochures
the Webshop opens for orders
End September: e-mail to Clubs that have not ordered
Mid October: e-mail to Clubs that have not ordered
Begin November: e-mail to Clubs that have not ordered
15 November: Webshop closes for orders.
weekly the tulip-persons are informed on the sales per Club
We have put all in a handbook with samples of letters and e-mails that the tulips-persons can modify for their particular District.
We have translated this manual in English, so if you are interested: just ask!
What are the Critical Succes factors?
Repeat the message relentlessly.
Establish good contact with Governor and Incoming Governor. This is important, because each new Governor needs to learn from us about the fight against polio. And should not try to find his own pet project. Continuity in focus and reaping the benefits of previous investments does not appear to be in the DNA of Rotarians.
We need to educate District staff and Clubs about polio. Each new Club president seems to be unaware of what happened before his term.
Apart from the purchase by Club members there are many other tulip-sales opportunities.
We also create publicity for the activities and results
Continue the same fundraising project year after year.
Celebrate the succes.
And most important: Enjoy what you are doing!
The DG plays an important role in any fundraising effort. Therefore we take care that the Governors of the Dutch Districts are sufficiently brainswashed. As you can see, our male Governors support the message with their attire.
You are of course more than welcome to participate in this fundraising project.
Here you see how to order the tulips.
To keep shipping costs low, a minimum of 10 boxes must be ordered.
The Rotary Club will get recognition for the nett result of its sales efforts!
Thank you for your time.
