Welcome
Welcome to Today’s Workshop. We will be discussing the
importance of accelerated learning techniques and the use of
them in your district’s student orientations. These techniques
will allow your students to learn and absorb more than
before. They will have fun while doing and you might find it a
bit amusing yourself. We will discuss some practical ways that
you can apply these techniques to improve your orientations.

Accelerated Learning
• Learning requires body & mind – get folks moving
• Experience it – don’t just tell students “learn the
language,” rather have them experience it
• We learn to ride a bike by riding a bike
• We learn faster together in groups – what group
activities can you create?
• We learn more when we are having fun!
• Images speed up learning

parents & YEOs

Atmosphere
• How do your orientations kick off?
• Who starts them? Who should start them?
• Do you make use of music?
• Are there smiles & laughter in the audience?
• Who on your team will resonate most with parents?
Students? The YEOs? Use your resources strategically.
• Not everyone has equal skill

Experiential
• Learn the language, learn the language, learn the language.
• How can we impress upon them through an experience…why they
should learn the language?
• Small groups – 8 minutes.

• What kind of topics you could create experiential learning
around:
• Language learning
• Being in a “foreign” situation (uncomfortable feeling)
• First night at the house family (questionnaire)
• A “typical” Rotary meeting (introductions, hand shakes, being
first)
• Any of the 6 Be’s (gratitude cards, hands on service project
etc)
Experiential

Experiential – an assignment
• An activity that would help inbounds get to know YEOs
(counsellors) and also for them to learn about their host
country

Stories
• “People will forget what you’ve said, people will forget
what you did, but they will never forget the way you made
them feel.”
Maya Angelou
