You just heard from 20 IB students of our D7930 from 2012-19, who all responded to a social media message from me on Facebook Messenger and recorded these video clips for me within a few days, then sent them to me via WhatsApp….
That’s the real power of social media when working with YE students!
I want to take you on a journey and hopefully help you shift your mindset from viewing social media as a PROBLEM to viewing it as a TOOL.
Break the rules = (sexting, organizing parties, buying/selling drugs, etc.). Relay story from district to the south of Boston.
I am here today to try to convince you that while some of these points may be true, social media is here to stay, and we need to adapt and learn how to use it as a tool, rather than only view it as a problem.
Both Social Media and Youth Exchange make the world a smaller place
They transcend geographical boundaries
They act as an equalizer and mobilizer
They facilitate cross-border and cross-cultural awareness & understanding
For communicating with IBs/OBs/Rebounds/Rotex
Much higher response rate than email!!!
It’s the way that they talk to their peers, so they are used to responding quickly
If you use these tools, you can be “cool”, too
For spreading the word about Rotary
Think of it as a marketing/PR tool
Think of it as a “recruiting” tool
For staying involved with current IBs/OBs and learn what they’re up to
Yes, we’re getting reports from them, but this is more “live stream” and timely
Gives you the ability to instantly communicate with them across the world
This statistic is for all people, not just YE students. From an article in Forbes magazine.
Facebook
Create FB events for your youth exchange events

Instagram
Share photos of your youth exchange events
Follow your IB/OB students to see what they’re up to
WhatsApp
Direct communication with individual students (avoids SMS roaming fees)
Group communications with the district team, or groups of students
Facebook Messenger
Direct communication with individual students (avoids SMS roaming fees)
Group communications with the district team, or groups of students
Twitter
While I personally and professionally use Twitter, I haven’t found much use for it for the purposes of youth exchange…
Welcome them early (once the GF is done) and connect them with previous IBs to your district/town.
This gives them the ability to ask questions of previous IBs and find a mentor. Being able to interact with students, who have come to the same district and had a great exchange year is a very powerful assurance to your future IBs!
Initial 6-8 weeks of radio silence with their natural parents and friends in the home country to enable/facilitate total language immersion
During the year, engage with them often and encourage them to post stories of their experience as a youth exchange student. This will allow them to look back on their experience in the future and be reminded of all the great connections they made.
Stay in touch after they leave to head back to their home country. It helps them with re-entry and reverse culture shock. Keep connected with them, and they will become a great resource for future IBs.
Also, they will want to come back again to visit, and you might be able to meet with them in other countries while you are traveling….
Connect with them during their OB orientations
Encourage them to “broadcast” their experience in their host country via social media, rather than engage in 1:1 conversations with friends and family back at home
Keep an eye on their social media feeds to detect early signs of problems. Not so much “monitoring”, but instead trying to lend a helping hand!
Use social media posts – boosted if necessary – to encourage young people in your communities to apply to become future OBs
Keep an active community going for your rebound students when they come back
Engage with them often to help them with re-entry and reverse culture shock
Encourage them to join Rotex, if there is an established Rotex organization in your country
Invite them to become facilitators for your IB and OB Orientations
We’ve found that our incoming IBs and future OBs listen a lot more to what Rotex/Rebound people have to say, than what us “old Rotarians” tell them
It helps teach them leadership skills and can be a total asset to your program!!
They love the program and have a deep connection with it – help them amplify that and energize your future OBs and current Ibs and become mentors for them
Make sure that you leverage youth exchange related social media posts to help energize the hosting Rotary clubs and district
Ensure that every time your youth exchange students come to visit your club, there is a social media post getting out there the message that Rotary is not just about “old people having lunch together”
Use social media posts to advertise the existence of the Rotary youth exchange programs
Use social media as a recruiting tool for HF, OB
