A simple AC generator consists of a rectangular coil that rotates between the poles of a magnet. As the coil rotates, it cuts the magnetic field lines, inducing a current in the coil. The induced current reverses direction each half rotation as the sides of the coil swap positions relative to the magnet poles. Slip rings connected to the coil ends allow the alternating current to be tapped out through carbon brushes to a load.

How an AC generator produces alternating current
1.
2. “A.C generator” means
“Alternating current
generator”
That is, an A.C generator
produces alternating
current , which reverses
its direction continuously
A.C generator is also

of rectangular
coil are connected to two
circular piece of copper
metal called slip rings R

As the slip rings R1 and
R2 rotate with the coil,
the two fixed pieces of

7. Suppose that the
generator coil ABCD is
initially in the horizontal
position
Again suppose that the
coil ABCD is being rotated
in the anticlockwise
8. 1. a s the coil rotates in
the anticlockwise direction
, the side AB of the coil
moves down cutting the
magnetic field lines near
the N- pole of the magnet
, and side CD moves up ,
cutting the magnetic field
near the S- pole of the
magnet . Due to this ,
9. Thus, the induced
current in two sides
of coil
Are in same direction
‘and we get an
effective induced

direction BAD C thus
10. 2.After half resolution,
the sides AB and CD
of the coil will inter
change their positions.
The side AB will come
on the right hand side
and side CD will come
on the left side. So,
after half a revolution ,
side AB s tarts moving

.Armature coil is
placed between Two pole

of a strong magnet . This
magnet provides a
strong magnetic field.

Commutator . It consist of
two halves (R1 and R2) of
a metallic ring . The output

generator rotates in the
magnetic field, induced
potential difference is
produced in the coil .
The induced potential
15. In d.c. generator , the
flow of current in the
circuit is in the same
direction as long as the
coil rotates in the
magnetic field . This is
because one brush is
always in contact with
