* The Asia News Network (ANN) is one of the world’s biggest media alliances.
Founded in 1999 with seven members, ANN now comprises 21 leading
media, mostly leading national English-language daily, from South,
Southeast and Northeast Asia. ANN’s main activities are daily exchanges of
news, photos and a host of other collaborations.
*The networking of newspapers in Asia was first discussed informally by Asian
editors who participated in the first Asian-German Editors' Forum organised
by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Manila. Encouraged by the forum’s
success and the warm fellowship among them, the editors decided to
pursue a more permanent professional and business relationship. With the
goal of improving coverage of Asian affairs by Asian media, ANN was born.

*(PPI) News agency founded in June 1956 as Pakistan Press Association
(PPA). The name was changed in 1968. It was first started by Mr.
Muzzam Ali, the Chief Editor of Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).
The agency objective was to provide competition to APP's monopoly.
It began its service by hand, only in Karachi.
*PPA also built up a network of correspondents in the smaller cities
and towns in Pakistan. This was in contrast to APP, which had
coverage in a limited number of large cities. For foreign news the
agency signed up with the Agence France-Presse (AFP) in 1957, and a
year later became the first Asian partner of DPA. PPA also posted a
correspondent in the Middle East, an area of special interest to
Pakistani newspapers.
*In 1958, the agency installed the teleprinters in the offices of its
clients. By 1960, PPI had subscribers in all the major newspapers
centers of Pakistan, namely Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Dacca.
*
*It was in this background that Mr. Mohsin Baig, the company's Chairman
thought of setting up a news network worthy of credibility at home as well
as in the foreign world. Mr Baig, who has been a journalist in his own right
and now Chief Executive Online initiated this project in January 1999. OINN
is different from contemporary Pakistani news agencies in many ways.
* There has been a very strong feeling in the outside world that there is no
credible and independent source of information in Pakistan, chiefly because
the electronic media, including radio and television networks are state-
owned.
*Online is the first-ever Pakistani news agency operating English and Urdu
news services simultaneously along with comprehensive national and
international photo coverage. Our news reports often appear in the national
and international print media while our photographs dominate news pages
in most of the newspapers coming out from Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore,
Peshawar and Quetta besides some leading papers in the Middle East,
Europe and the United States.
*
*The Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) started its life in 1947 with the
independence of Pakistan. Initially it was run through a Trust, but owing to
financial bottlenecks, it was taken over by the Government through an
Ordinance called; “Associated Press of Pakistan (taking over) Ordinance
1961″,
*on 15th June 1961, to put it on a sound financial footing. APP was later
converted into Corporation on October 19, 2002 through an Ordinance
renaming it as Associated Press of Pakistan Corporation (APPC) and lending a
status of semi government media government.

Charles Louis Havas. Agence France-Presse (AFP), the world's oldest
international news agency, transmits millions of words in six

*The Reuter agency was established in 1851 by Paul Julius Reuter in Britain
at the London Royal Exchange. Paul Reuter worked at a book-publishing firm
in Berlin and was involved in distributing radical pamphlets at the beginning
of the Revolutions in 1848.
*These publications brought much attention to Reuter, who in 1850
developed a prototype news service in Aachen using homing pigeons and
electric telegraphy from 1851 on in order to transmit messages between
Brussels and Aachen.
*The Reuter's Telegram Company was later launched. The company initially
covered commercial news, serving banks, brokerage houses, and business
firms.
*
*Associated Press is a not-for-profit news cooperative formed in May 1846 by
five daily newspapers in New York City to share the cost of transmitting
news of the Mexican–American War by boat, horse express and telegraph.
When the AP was founded, news became a salable commodity.
*The invention of the rotary press allowed the New York Tribune in the 1870s
to print 18,000 papers per hour.
*During the Civil War and Spanish–American War, there was a new incentive
to print vivid, on-the-spot reporting. Melville Stone, who had founded the
Chicago Daily News in 1875, served as AP General Manager from 1893 to
1921. He embraced the standards of accuracy, impartiality, and integrity.

This was in contrast to APP, which had coverage in a limited number of large cities. PPA also posted a correspondent in the Middle East, an area of special interest to Pakistani newspapers. *In 1958, the agency installed the teleprinters in the offices of its clients.
