5. FCARCSI Eligibility
MCAI MCQ :
Primary medical qualification acceptable to the Irish Medical Council (IMC).
MCAI OSCE & OSEs :
Registration with the Irish Medical Council or other national medical registration body.
Employed as an anesthetist for 12 months, prior to the date of the exam.
Success in the MCAI MCQ.
Final FCARCSI MCQ & E&SAQ:
Passed, within 10 years preceding the exam date, or is exempt.
Completed 30 months of training in the specialty of anesthesia within 5 years of the date of the
exam. in posts approved by the CAI or the RCoA (UK). up to 12 months may have been completed in a recognized training
program overseas.
Registration with the CAI or the RCoA (UK) as a postgraduate trainee in Anesthesia. Or Has been
employed as an anesthetist in a NHS anesthetic department which has a defined training element
for 12 months, immediately prior to the date of the Final examination.

o Resuscitation, technical skills, anatomy, history-taking, physical examination, communication
skills, anesthetic equipment, monitoring equipment, measuring equipment, anesthetic
hazards, clinical anesthesia, airway management scenarios and management of critical
incidents, interpretation of radiological images, ECGs and biochemistry/hematology results.
SOEs: 2 / 25 min stations
50 min
o 25 min comprising 4 questions in pharmacology and one question on physics,
o 25 minutes comprising 4 questions in physiology and one question on clinical measurement

Clinical Case Scenario (case study /SOE).
o Case study to be read by the candidate (10 minutes).
o 30 minutes for examination & discussion of relevant investigations & peri-operative / critical
care management.
