Editor's Notes

  1. Good morning / Good afternoon I’d like to take the next 30 or 40 minutes to give you a brief overview of our company and describe the capabilities we offer our customers and how we add value to their operations and deliver competitive advantage. Please feel free to stop me at any time with your questions.
  2. As the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, we provide competitive advantage, drive sustainability and deliver trust. Recognised as the global benchmark for quality and integrity, we employ over 56,000 people and operate a network of more than 1,000 offices and laboratories around the world. (Roughly half of our employees are based in EMEA, with another quarter in the Americas and a quarter in Asia Pacific)
  3. We aim to be the most competitive and the most productive service organisation in the world. Our core competencies in inspection, verification, testing and certification are being continuously improved to be best-in-class. They are at the heart of what we are. Our chosen markets will be solely determined by our ability to be the most competitive and to consistently deliver unequalled service to our customers all over the world.
  4. We seek to be epitomised by our passion, integrity, entrepreneurship and our innovative spirit, as we continually strive to fulfil our vision. These values guide us in all that we do and are the bedrock upon which our organisation is built.
  5. A little more than 130 years ago, SGS was founded in Rouen, France, as a grain inspection company. Since that moment, we have grown through diversification and acquisition into the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company. Throughout the early and mid 20th century, we expanded beyond our core offering in agricultural inspection to activities in minerals, oil, gas, chemicals, consumer goods and industrial services. By 1980, half of our revenue was generated from services that had not even existed in 1970, adding expertise in automotive, environmental, certification, governmental and life science services. In 1981, SGS became a publicly traded company on the Swiss Stock Exchange. The 1990s opened up tremendous opportunity for us as trade barriers fell and new markets emerged. By the start of the new millennium, a wide-ranging corporate restructuring led to the formation of the ten businesses that are now found at SGS. From our beginnings in 1878 as a grain inspection house, we have steadily grown into our role as the industry leader. We have done this through continual improvement and innovation and by reducing risk and improving the productivity and efficiency of our customers’ operations. Moving forward, we are well positioned for growth and will continue to look beyond customers’ and society’s expectations in order to deliver market leading services wherever they are needed.
  6. We inspect the quantity and quality of traded goods. This can vary from factory inspection during production to random inspection of final stored products, and from laboratory inspection to on-site inspection at loading and unloading. Our verification services ensure that products and services comply with global standards and local regulations. Combining global coverage with local knowledge, unrivalled experience and expertise in virtually every industry, we cover the entire supply chain from raw materials to final consumption. We test product quality and performance against various technical, safety and regulatory standards. To support this, we operate a global network of state-of-the-art laboratories and testing facilities. SGS certifies that products, systems or services meet the requirements of standards set by governments, international standardisation bodies or clients. We also help develop customised standards and certify clients against these standards, based on specific competitive needs.
  7. The following stories demonstrate how SGS delivers trust throughout supply chains, and exemplifies our core abilities to build trust between people, companies and governments. When there is trust throughout supply-chains, transactions are simpler and more efficient, margins are higher and distance is no longer an issue What we do every day is at the cornerstone of continuous improvement. It enhances productivity and in a global economy we help speed trade and get products to market faster. (NOTE – probably best to show only a two or three of the following, but all are inserted so that you can choose.)

  16. MAKING SURE BIOFUELS WORK Optimism over the potential of biofuels to address our dependence on oil and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is diminishing as some unintended consequences emerge. For example, the prices of corn, sugar, and palm oil are increasing as they are used as feedstocks in biofuelproduction, driving up the cost of food products that rely on those commodities. The clash between food and fuel demand will only get worse as population increases, dietary habits change, and the demand for biofuels grows. Both the United States and the European Union set ambitious targets for the integration of biofuels into the transportation fuel supply. But at what cost to the price of food and the environment will these targets be achieved? Governments are now introducing sustainability standards for biofuels to ensure that their use does not negatively impact the environment, particularly in developing nations where biofuel crops are grown. For example in the United Kingdom, the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) requires that by 2010, 5% of transportation fuel come from biofuels that are derived from sustainable resources, and that fuel suppliers report and certify it as such. We are helping customers successfully meet the regulatory and reporting requirements of standards such as RTFO and others as they are introduced elsewhere in the European Union and around the world. Our work in this area will go a long way to ensuring that biofuels have a positive net impact on the environment.
  17. SGS provides reliable, independent testing in the following areas : non-ferrous metals and precious minerals steel and steel making raw materials energy minerals fertilizers and dry chemicals industrial minerals These allow for: TECHNICAL RISK REDUCTION: Involved in the design, staffing, operation and support of on-site labs we help companies to minimise the risk associated with laboratory operations and generate the accurate and reliable data needed to run and optimise plant operations. For example, Pilot Plants, Geometallurgy and production forecasting. FINANCIAL RISK REDUCTION: The financial risks of trade are significant. We have a range of services designed to reduce these risks and facilitate trading. SGS speeds up this process with e.Certificates - digitalized versions of the paper certificate issued at point of loading. OPERATIONAL EXPERTISE: Amongst others, our globally standardized chemical laboratories provide independent analytical services and operate ‘24/7’, 365 days a year. We also provide bankable metallurgical services to the international mining community and exploration to evaluation-stage service to the international diamond exploration community. 18. In the gold industry : A major gold company turned to SGS to provide services through the value chain from exploration to trade support. SGS provided a purpose-built laboratory in a remote location to address their analysis needs, which now processes over 6000 samples per month. SGS was able to increase mine throughput 60% without recourse to new equipment and later doubled throughput at the same plant. As this company grows, they continue to look to SGS to provide them with a comprehensive package of high quality services. Pilot plant leading example: Our pilot plant testing helps mining industry customers test and refine processes for the most efficient extraction of metals and minerals while minimising the environmental impact of mining. This testing is the best way to establish the viability of the selected extraction method, verify the ability to meet environmental requirements and minimise the technical, environmental, operational and commercial risks associated with opening a new plant. One of several pilot plant facilities we operate around the world is located in Chile just west of the capital city of Santiago. Using the plant in Pudahuel, our metallurgists simulate the future performance of our customers’ processing plants to optimise energy, reagent and water usage to minimise the environmental impact of their operations. With our expertise, this pilot plant helps customers mimic the conditions under which their actual processing plants will operate. Mining projects constitute sizable investments by our customers, often in the billions of dollars. Knowing in advance how effectively one can extract metals and minerals while mining is essential, both for determining the viability of a particular mining operation as well as for securing start-up financing from investors.

FUEL MARKING SOLUTIONS IN KENYA Continued expansion of demand and the high price of oil will only fuel the threat from those who seek to profit from its adulteration and other forms of illegal trade. Our Fuel Marking Services protect the integrity of supplies to the energy production, transport, heating and domestic use sectors. This ensures that governments and fiscal regulators collect the appropriate amount of revenue from excise taxes on fuel and at the same time also protect sales revenues for oil companies. The services prevent and deter: Fuel adulteration with sub-standard products or low tax (subsidised) fuels; The illegal import of no or low tax products (smuggling); The dumping of tax exempt export or transit fuels into a domestic market; and The export of subsidised fuels. In Kenya, the government instituted a nationwide programme using our services to curb the illegal dumping of export fuel and the adulteration of premium automotive fuels with low tax kerosene. Fuels are tested across the country at retail sites and other storage locations using field test kits that provide results within a few minutes. The benefits to both consumers and the Kenyan government are clear: our service results in reduced illegal trade, protection of tax and sales revenues, increased consumer confidence, protection of vehicle engines, improved exhaust emissions and environmental protection. 22. Early phase clinical development: Developing a new drug is often a race against time. Delays in bringing a drug to the market can cost millions of dollars each day. More importantly, these delays can prevent a broader and potentially life-saving choice of treatments being made available to patients. Here is an example of an Early Phase Fast track Drug Development: First into man, combined single- and multiple dose study  the SGS study design and capability to deliver allowed a program time reduced by about 4 months. Quality Control Case Study: Global pharmaceutical and healthcare companies are faced with many, ever changing challenges. Among these include developing quality control capabilities and processes that work across multiple manufacturing sites, often located in different countries. Outsourcing is a solution many companies utilize to handle their quality control workload. However, because many service partners tend to be local providers, harmonized quality control processes may not be the end result. Consequently, the selection of an outsourcing partner has implications beyond simply completing quality control tests that need to be performed, but extends into how procedures and reports are harmonized company-wide. In one such case, a European-based multinational had the need to outsource microbiological testing due to every-growing testing volume. We subsequently learned from their head of support services that they had also been testing samples in Europe, for products produced in their plant in Shanghai. SGS provided a solution whereby samples were tested by SGS – both in China and in Europe. This not only provided a direct process for testing of materials manufactured in Shanghai, but SGS also implemented a harmonized solution that was qualified at both sites.

  24. Product recalls and loosely controlled supply chains hurt everyone Given the slew of product recalls over the past year, safety and quality are top of mind for our customers. The devastating effect that these recalls can have on brand reputation is focusing attention on the benefits of a secure, manageable and sustainable supply chain, where brand owners are more in touch with the activities of their suppliers and their suppliers’ suppliers. Product recalls affect nearly every industry and the fact of the matter is that they can happen despite one’s best efforts. We help our customers reduce the scale and impact of recalls, trace products when recalls do happen and ensure that the proper procedures are put in place to minimise the possibility of such failures happening again. Consumer awareness and concern over product quality and safety has the ability to change buying patterns and reward the companies and brands that demonstrate and communicate control over their supply chains and manufacturing processes. Products need to go beyond safety & regulatory compliance, demonstrating sustainable social & environmental benefits Customers obviously expect to buy healthy and safe products. Companies must assess the chemical hazards throughout the product life cycle of the product through analysing its substances. As many initiatives of eco-lablling rise, product design including environmental impacts in early stage allow to demonstrate the environmental benefits of your products and be competitive. Efficient supply chain management needs to monitor the CSR performances of products and operations to avoid any risk and enhance the reputation of the brand. Service innovation, like the dynamic companies we support, drives the success of CTS. To keep up-to-date with our evolving range of services, their benefits and why they are different, get in touch with the marketing managers for each SBU.

  26. 7 Star : Created a new voluntary hotel classification criterion called “SGS 7 stars”. This certification service is designed to identify the extra luxurious services offered by Town House Galleria in Milan. Following validation by an international technical committee (external to the certification body), these features will be checked directly by SGS, who will certify their conformity, and check that they are maintained in the future through scheduled inspections and, first and foremost, through “Mystery Guest” visits. These features include services provided by the hotel, from guest’s arrival at the airport to his departure, luxurious services that will satisfy a particularly demanding clientele looking for a home-like  stay. Customisation, discretion and luxury are the main characteristics required to hotels that aspire to becoming 7-star facilities. Single Food Audit When food manufacturers export to foreign markets they must comply with quality and safety regulations from both their home countries and the importing country. This is a daunting task for manufacturers as there are many different quality and safety standards to contend with, some of which with overlapping requirements. To address these needs, SGS introduced the world’s first Single Food Audit Pack, a set of solutions that combines the elements of the ISO 9001, ISO 22000, HACCP, GMP, BRC and IFS safety and quality management standards. The parallel requirements of all of these standards can be met effectively with one audit, which saves time and money as well as causes less disruption in customers’ operational activities. As an example: Korea-Dongah Flour Mills Company combined the requirements of ISO 9001 and ISO 22000 into one audit covering their quality and food safety management systems. SGS audited four manufacturing sites, covering wheat flour, pre-mix and buckwheat production as well as vegetable and salad processing and checked that their operations and processes met or exceeded the standards’ requirements. A single audit makes it possible for our customers to review and align their quality and food safety management systems, and save time and money in the process .

  30. SORTING OUT THE PAST TO PROTECT THE FUTURE Kolliken is a small town in northern Switzerland near Zurich, it also happens to be the site of one of the largest hazardous waste dumps in the country. Pollutants from the waste stored there could have become a potential threat to the region’s drinking water. Aware of the problem, the Swiss authorities decided to seal off the waste site, excavate and sort the waste, then dispose of it properly. We are working closely with the authorities to analyse the waste for toxins, which determines the best form of disposal. Options include incineration, removal to a more secure waste dump, or, in the case of extremely toxic substances, storage. This is an enormous undertaking and is expected to last until 2012, by which point more than 250,000 cubic meters of hazardous waste will have been sorted and disposed of. Through our Institute for Applied Chromatography in Belgium, we have pioneered several technologies in this area, including micro pollutant and dioxin screening. This screening allows customers to accurately identify what has been disposed of at a particular waste site. This testing is very useful in a situation such as Kolliken, helping to determine the best course of action for waste removal and disposal.
