2. Sustainable Energy
๏ต Sustainable energy is the sustainable use of energy, that
meets the needs of the present without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their needs.
2
3. CONT,,
3
๏ต Technologies that promote sustainable energy
include renewable energy sources, such as
๏ง hydroelectricity,
๏ง solar energy,
๏ง wind energy,
๏ง wave power,
๏ง geothermal energy,
๏ง tidal power.
4. Introduction
๏ต Renewable Energy โ โany sustainable energy source that comes from natural
environment.โ
๏ต Some Aspects of Renewable Energy
๏ต It exists abundant in the environment
๏ต Ready to be harnessed, inexhaustible
๏ต It is a clean alternative to fossil fuels
๏ต โenergy that is derived from natural process that are replenished constantlyโ --
defined by the RENEWABLE ENERGY WORKING PARTY of the INTERNATIONAL
ENERGY AGENCY

5. Importance Of Sustainable Energy
๏ต Sustainable energy is important because of the benefits it provides.
The key benefits are:
๏ต 1. Environmental:
Sustainable energy can avoid and reduce air emissions as well
as water consumption, waste, noise and adverse land-use impacts.
๏ต 2. Energy for future generations:
Renewables avoid the rapid depletion of fossil fuel reserves and
will empower future generations to deal with the environmental impact
of over-dependence on fossil fuels.
๏ต 3. Energy security:
Lessens our dependence on fossil and imported fuels.
5
6. Solar energy
๏ต Solar energy is the energy received by the earth from the sun.
๏ต This energy is in the form of solar radiation, which makes the production of
solar electricity possible.
๏ต Advantages:
1. Clean and renewable energy source.
2. Causes no pollution.
๏ต Disadvantages:
1. Expensive
2. Not created during the night and cloudy weather.
6
7. Wind Energy
๏ต The conversion of energy
in which turbines convert the kinetic
energy of wind into mechanical or electric
energy that can be used for power.
๏ต The advantage of wind energy
1.They are pollution free.
2.Using wind energy means that less fossil fuel
(coal and oil) needs to be burned to make
electricity
๏ต The disadvantages of wind energy
1.spoil the look of the natural environment
2.Wind turbines make noise 7
8. HYDROELECRTICITY
๏ต HYDROELECTRICITY is a form of Electricity which is
produced by water power. For e.g. DAMSโฆ
๏ต ADVANTAGES:
1. Once a dam is constructed, electricity can be
produced at a constant rate.
2 . The lake's water can be used for irrigation
purposes.
๏ต Disadvantges:
1. Dams are extremely expensive to build and must
be built to a very high standard.
2.The flooding of large areas of land means that the
natural environment is destroyed.
8
9. BIOMASS
๏ต Biomass is the common name for organic materials
used as renewable energy sources such as;
๏ง wood, crops, and wastes.
๏ต Advantages:
๏ผ Abundant and Renewable
๏ผ Less Dependency on Fossil Fuels
๏ผ Clean Energy
๏ต Disadvantages:
๏ผ Cost
๏ผ Space
9
10. Non-Sustainable energy
๏ต A form of energy which is declined
and not maintained for the future
generation.
๏ต Non-Sustainable energy can refer to
non-renewable energy.
10
11. Non-renewable Energy
๏ต A non-renewable energy (also called a finite energy)
๏ต A resource that does not renew or replenished.
๏ต It is believed that fossil fuels were formed over 300 million years ago.
๏ต Non-renewable energy are:
๏ต Fossil fuels
๏ง Coal
๏ง oil and
๏ง natural gas
11
12. Advantage and disadvantage of fossil fuel
๏ต The good thing is about fossil fuels is:
๏ต Relatively less expensive to produce.
๏ต higher demand as it tend to cost less.
๏ต The bad thing about fossil fuels is:
๏ต Fossil fuels are made up mainly of carbon.
๏ต When they are burned (used) they produce a lot of carbon compounds (carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gases)
๏ต Air and water pollution are all consequences of using fossil fuels.
12
13. CONTD
๏ต FOSSIL FUEL DEPLETION
๏ต OIL: OPEC (Middle East) dominated, 20-40 year life
OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries)
๏ต NATURAL GAS: CIS (Russian) dominated, 40-70 year life
CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States)
๏ต COAL: Widely distributed, 80-240 year life
