2. What Is WAVE Energy????
The wave energy is developed due to the winds interacting with
the surface of the ocean.
Near-surface winds induce wave action and cause wind-blown
currents at about 3% of the wind speed
The winds get 1% to 5% of sun energy and the part of this
energy is transferred to the wave energy.
The energy flux available in the wave energy is more then that
available from solar , wind, and other renewable sources.
4. Category Of Ocean Waves
1. Deep water wave
Waves do NOT interact with the
seafloor.
Orbits of the water molecules are
circular.
5. 2. Shallow water wave
Waves interact with the seafloor.
Orbits of the water molecules become elliptical.
6. 1.How to convert the wave energy into other
for of energy(electrical energy) ?????
By using some Devices….
2. Which kind of devices????
There are mainly 3 type of devices or I can say converter which is used to convert the
wave energy into other form of energy…
7. 1. Float type wave energy converter
2.Dolphin type wave energy converter
3.Oscillating water column type converter
Wave energy converter……
8. 1. Float type wave energy converter
This device floats on the surface
of the water, held in place by
cables connected to the seabed.
Buoys use the rise and fall of
swells to drive hydraulic/air pumps
and generate electricity.
EMF generated by electrical
transmission cables and acoustic of
these devices may be a concern for
marine organisms.
The presence of the buoys may
affect fish, marine mammals, and
birds as potential minor collision
risk and roosting sites
9. 2. Dolphin type wave energy converter
This device uses the float which has two
motion.
This first is a rolling motion about its own
fulcrum with the connecting rod and the
other is a nearly vertical or heaving motion
about the connecting rod fulcrum.
It causes relative revolving moments
between the connecting rod and stationary
dolphin.
In both cases , the moments are amplified
and converted by gears into continuous
rotary motion that drive the two electrical
generators.
10. 3. Oscillating water column type converter
Oscillating Water Columns (OWCs) are devices that
generate energy from the rise and fall of water
caused by waves and tides in the ocean.
As water rises and falls around and inside an OWC,
air is displaced by the water in a collecting chamber
and pushed back and forth past a Power-Take-Off
(PTO) system.
The PTO system converts the airflow into energy. In
models that convert airflow to electricity, the PTO
system consists of a bidirectional turbine.
This means that the turbine always spins the same
direction regardless of the direction of airflow,
allowing for energy to be continuously generated

12. Advantages
1. Wave energy is more concentrated then wind and solar.
2. It is a free and renewable energy source.
3. These devices are relatively pollution free.
4. These devices do not use up large land masses unlike solar and wind.
13. Disadvantages
1. The equipment must be operated in a marine
environment.
2. Wave energy converter have to be designed to
withstand very severe peak stresses in storms.
3. It is site specific , not many accessible sites for large
wave activity.
4. The energy may have to be transported a greater
distance to shore.
