Welcome to our autumn diary - bursting with one of our highest ever concentrations of special events as we approach Sage Gateshead’s 10th Birthday in December.
Four evenings are part of an extended birthday festival (the two Pet Shop Boys Electric World Tour nights; the welcome return of the St Petersburg Philharmonic with charismatic music director Yuri Temirkanov and ‘The Power of Ten’ special Late Mix with American composer David Lang), and this diary also includes the first three of Royal Northern Sinfonia’s all-season cycle of Beethoven’s nine symphonies, with music
director designate Lars Vogt, principal conductor Mario Venzago and very welcome guest Julian Rachlin.
2. Welcome from our
General Director
Welcome to our autumn diary – bursting with
one of our highest ever concentrations of special
events as we approach Sage Gateshead’s 10th
Birthday in December.
Four evenings are part of an extended birthday
festival (the two Pet Shop Boys Electric World
Tour nights; the welcome return of the St
Petersburg Philharmonic with charismatic music
director Yuri Temirkanov and ‘The Power of Ten’
special Late Mix with American composer David
Lang), and this diary also includes the first three
of Royal Northern Sinfonia’s all-season cycle
of Beethoven’s nine symphonies, with music
director designate Lars Vogt, principal conductor
Mario Venzago and very welcome guest Julian
Rachlin.
These three months also include a truly
exceptional wealth of world music - from Mali
to Chile, Senegal to Greece and three evenings
with masters of Indian music, and other special
moments during the autumn range from BBC
Radio 3’s Free Thinking Festival (of debate, new
ideas, music and performance) to the 10th Brass
in Concert championship we’ve hosted; from
the illustrious North East Guitar Festival to the
teeming participatory excitement of Newcastle
Gateshead’s Juice Festival for children and young
people, and from The Lindisfarne Story (with
doyens Billy Mitchell and Ray Laidlaw) to a
traditional Northumbrian Harvest Supper – a
feast of regional music and food.
Welcome visitors including Sage Gateshead
in their autumn touring plans range from
Elaine Paige to Abdullah Ibrahim; Maddy Prior
to Curtis Stigers and Neil Sedaka to Sheryl
Crow (plus the breathtakingly brilliant trumpet
virtuoso Alison Balsom), and we’re also proud
to present Kathryn Tickell’s exciting new band
The Side; Nine Below Zero reforming their
classic line-up; an extraordinary programme
from the pioneering Hebrides Ensemble
(Dead Elvis), and the joyfully explosive world
of Bellowhead!
We’re marking the centenary of World War
One with several eloquent events (see the
WW1 tag) including two remarkable staged
multi-media evenings (Sam Sweeney’s ‘Made
in the Great War’ and Helen Chadwick’s War
Correspondents Song Theatre); Benjamin
Britten’s shattering War Requiem, and Thomas
Allen hosting a day of twelve brand new
choral works on the theme of war specially
commissioned by our concert hall colleagues
across Europe.
Whatever brings you to Sage Gateshead this
autumn, I hope you’ll feel inspired to make
some rewarding new discoveries from the
really exceptional musical feast in these pages
alongside enjoying familiar pleasures.

and ensure a continuing musical legacy for future generations to enjoy.
Gifts of all amounts are very welcome and we can potentially
turn every £1 donated into £1.75!

Hall One
For concerts with ‘Standing available’ the floor is lowered for a standing/dancing area. Tickets must be
purchased specifically for this area. The areas behind the stage are not always on sale. Please ask Ticket
Office. A* tickets: Seats closest to the stage are offered on selected shows.
Occasionally these tickets may have ‘added value’ extras (these will be detailed on our website,
sagegateshead.com).
Hall Two
Hall Two is a flexible, ten-sided space, and is set up for each concert according to what will provide the
best experience for the audience: there are three levels, and levels 2 and 3 are gallery-style spaces. The
main options are:
Theatre layout (default):
the stage is across one end of
the hall: there are rows of seats
on the flat floor and some
raised seating towards the rear.
Seated tickets are numbered,
standing tickets are not.
Family layout: like Theatre,
but the stage is lower and there
are mats at the front where
you can sit with your children.
Tickets for Level 1 are not
numbered: tickets for Levels 2
and 3 are numbered.
Cabaret layout: like
Theatre, but the seats on Level
1 are tables and chairs on a flat
floor. Seating around tables is
not numbered.
Club layout: Level 1 is
standing, with unnumbered
tickets specifying access to
the Level. Levels 2 and 3 are
numbered seating. Drinks are
allowed in on Level 1 only.
In the Round layout:
the stage is in the centre of the
hall with seats on every side.
All tickets are numbered: areas
A (Level 1), B (Level 2) and C
(Level 3) are seated; areas D
(Level 1) and E (Levels 2 and
3) are standing and not always
on sale.
Halls One and Two
In seats on the sides of Levels 2
and 3, you have to lean forwards
to obtain a full view of the stage.
Please ask our staff for more
information.
