1. Prose and Fiction
PROSE: Written language in its ordinary form rather than poetry.
Writing or speech in its normal continuous form, without the rhythmic or visual
line structure of poetry.
FICTION: Literary works of imagination: novels and stories that describe imaginary
people and events.
WHAT IS NOVEL?
“A long story in prose.”, “A genre of literature, it’s a narration of events, incidents
and actions having characters, plot, setting, point of view, theme, conflict and style.
Character is the who, plot is the what, setting is the where and when, theme is the
how of a story.
Italian “novella” Means ‘new story’, ‘ new thing’

ANOTHER DEFINITION OF NOVEL: “A long narrative in prose dealing with the
action of imaginary people.
2. Plot: “A series of events having logical
connection among them”.
Simple Plot: It simply starts and than comes to an
end.

Organic (Organism) Plot: It’s a type of
that starts fresh and ends point to be remember it
does not have any backwards going I.e. Flash backs
mostly it ends happily.

3. Loose Plot: This type of plot mostly has
digression: exaggeration or departure from
central topic. In literature when author during
writing a scene he gets away from his central
point and start a new story that is called
digression and such plot that has digression
called loose plot.
Shakespeare and Charles Dickens were
notorious for loose plot.
