1. Questionnaire results analysed

As you can see, a total of 21 people have completed my newspaper survey. Out of this 21
people - 14 people are female and 7 are male which is a variety of responses from both
genders.
I aimed to get an even mix of different ages for my survey although this was quite difficult as
I was most able to ask people in the age group of 16-20 to complete my survey. However, as
you can see I have still managed to collect some responses from people of different ages in
order to make my survey as successful as possible.
For my market research I have created a survey which I will send to numerous people and post
over social networking websites to get a wide range of responses. This will help me find a
suitable target audience for my newspaper and allow me to create my newspaper to that it will
attract the readers I am aiming to.
2. The vast majority of people who completed my survey were all employed. This is useful as my
newspaper is likely to be aimed at the working class, which means my responses to the survey
will help me make my newspaper as successful as possible.
As you can see, from the 21 people who have completed my survey none have responded
with they read broadsheet newspapers. Tabloid was a much more popular answer so this
will be the type of newspaper I create for my main product. As online is the most common
answer I am going to feature a website address on my newspaper.
3. To decide if I should make my newspaper a daily, weekly or monthly issue I included the
question of how often do you read newspapers to my survey. As you can see, there was a
wide range of responses to this question. The majority of people said that they read
newspapers daily however many people also answered that they read newspapers weekly,
as well as some who read them monthly or rarely. From this, I have decided to make my
newspaper a weekly issue as this is the average response from all the people who have
completed my survey.
Approximately 50% of people responded with that they usually buy free newspapers. Almost
40% responded with that they pay 50p for a newspaper as well as 2 people answering with
that they pay £1 and over £1.50. Therefore, the price I am going to charge for my newspaper
is 45p as this seems a very reasonable price from the results of my survey.
4. 65% of people said that headlines are what encourage them to buy a newspaper. I am going to
ensure I have bold headlines on the cover of my newspaper which stand out well to make it look
both professional and eye-catching. Almost 60% of people answered that they are attracted to
newspapers with photographs also so I am going to feature both large headlines and large images
throughout my newspaper. The stories in my newspaper will also be interesting as 40% of people
have answered that it is stories that attracts them. Finally, I will also include either a freebie or an
offer to ensure that it attracts as many readers as possible. As my newspaper is going to be a
tabloid, these are conventions of that genre.
For the colour scheme about 50% chose black and white, and about 50% chose red. Taking this
into consideration, I am going to make my colour scheme red, black and white to make the
newspaper attention grabbing for readers.
5. There was a large variety of different responses from the question of what stories do you enjoy
reading. The most popular was celebrity however as this would be an unrealistic story for my
newspaper due to being unable to take images for my newspaper. However I will make this a
feature story to attract readers into buying the newspaper. Sport was chosen by almost half the
people who completed my survey therefore I am going to feature this in my newspaper. Crime is a
dominant topic throughout newspapers also, as well as being a popular topic. These are all story
topics I am going to consider when creating my newspaper.
This question also developed a fairly even response from the question. As you can see, people
believe that local newspapers represent their local area in both positive and negative ways. This
is something I am going to continue to do with my newspaper in order to make it as realistic as
possible.
6. The comments left under this question reinforce the responses I have received. Most people
believe that local newspapers are mainly negative due to keeping the public up to date on crime.
I have decided that I will include negative stories to make my newspaper seem more realistic,
such as crime stories to keep the public aware. But also I will include positive stories as people
would prefer to read more pleasant stories about their local area.
Overall analysis: I am going to take into consideration the responses from my survey to
ensure my newspaper can attract readers. I aim my newspaper at both men and women aged
16+, mainly working class. From my results I have decided to use the colour scheme red white
and black as it is eye-catching and bright, connoting Salford and England which is relevant to
my local newspaper. I am going to charge 45p for my newspaper as this was an average result
from my survey for what people usually pay for newspapers. It will be a weekly issue as local
newspapers often are, and this was the most popular answer from my survey. It’s going to be a
tabloid newspaper which will attract the working class target audience that I aim to with an
online website advertised as this is the most popular form of newspaper. From my results I can
gather that people enjoy reading a variety of different stories so I am going to take this into
account and include different topics of stories. I am going to feature crime, sport and human
interest stories – which will also make my newspaper more positive than other typical
newspapers, hopefully attracting a wider audience who are interested in reading the positive
stories from their local area.
