2. Disclaimer
• Bethany has decided to implement an essential oil program after careful research
and consulting with other senior living communities that have documented
positive results in using essential oils in their facilities including skilled nursing,
assisted living, dementia care, and rehab and adult day services, as well as the
positive effects for staff and families.
• Young Living essential oils were chosen because they are 100% pure without any
adulteration or dilution. Also, because that is the brand of oils used by the
Wisconsin senior living communities who had the documented success.
• The information provided here refers only to Young Living essential oils and their
capabilities. It is unknown if other brands are 100% pure or not.
• Please keep in mind that if the oil is adulterated or diluted it will not provide the
same results as described and very possibly can cause harm. If you choose to use
another brand for your personal use, please do your homework and research!
The information in this presentation is for educational purposes only. I am not a medical
professional and do not diagnose, treat, cure or prescribe. If you have a specific health
concern, please consult with your health care professional or naturopath.
3. What is an Essential Oil?
• It is the aromatic, volatile
liquid that is within many
plants.
• Essential Oils are very complex
and concentrated.
• Leaves, flowers, roots, bark or
seeds are either distilled or
cold pressed to extract an
essential oil.
• They are more potent than
dried herbs because of the
distillation process. (One drop
of peppermint oil is equivalent
to 28 cups of tea!)
4. What We’ve Learned from Others in Our Field
Homme Home of Wittenburg, WI had
incredible results when they began an Essential
Oil program a part of a grant study in 2011.
5. Brenda Wedemayer,
RN, Manager of
dementia unit at
Homme Home in
Wittenberg
“I went to the initial training and was
totally skeptical that essential oils
would have any benefit. It’s the
nurse in me, I didn’t see how
breathing in something that isn’t a
medication could help. My clinical
side thought it was a hoax. But as I
got into the program and saw the
data, the numbers don’t lie, the data
doesn’t lie and we’ve seen some
behaviors decrease. It was
unbelievable.”
6. “When used as a supplemental
treatment in conjunction with our
more traditional and proven medical
treatments, our staff has observed that
our dementia patients feel better and
are less anxious. In fact,
we have been able to
reduce non-scheduled
use of medications for
agitation, anxiety,
depression and
delusions by over 75%.”
Over
75%
- Steve Seybold, Executive Director Homme Homes
7. Other positive health effects observed
at Homme Home in Wittenberg
• Improved kidney functioning
• Increased appetite for dementia patients at
risk of weight loss
• Improved upper respiratory function, reducing
need for high dependence on liquid oxygen
• Maintained health during times of risk for
common respiratory infection outbreaks
State of Wisconsin Civil Money Penalty Aromatherapy Grant Final Report,
“Efficacy of Aromatherapy for Use in the Elderly”, December 2011
8. “Working on a dementia unit can be
very stressful and long-term care,
every day is very busy. In the past staff
was saying at the end of the day they
were really stressed out. Since we’ve
been using the diffusers, they aren’t as
stressed out…they aren’t as exhausted
as before. There’s not
been anything different. We have the
same staffing ratios we’ve always had.
The only thing different is the
diffusers.” - Brenda Wedemayer, RN, Manager of
Dementia Unit at Homme Home Wittenberg
9. “We have been so pleased with the
results of the study that we now use
essential oils and diffusers throughout
our entire facility. One family member
was so impressed with the impact the
diffused oil had on their relative that
they donated 30 diffusers to expand the
program at that time. We know the
benefit to our residents and staff and
routinely refer to the Essential Oil Desk
Reference to find essential oils to try
before resorting to pharmaceutical
medicines. The cost savings and
improved quality of life make a huge
difference.”
Justin Cieslewicz, Administrator,
Homme Homes Wittenberg
10. How Oils are Used
• Aromatically – Breathing in the vapors from oil or
diffused in a fine mist of water into the air. There are
also diffuser necklaces and bracelets.
• Topically – Absorbed into the skin through massage.
Some oils are very potent and must be diluted with a
pure vegetable oil.
• Internally – Some oils may be added to food or
water or placed in a gelatin capsule and swallowed.
Always consult individual product labels for directions.

24. Here are some
QUICK
TIPS
for using essential oils safely:
Although most essential oils are safe for general use, the potency of some oils can cause irritation
and should not be used in specific situations. That’s why Young Living recommends checking the
product label for appropriate use.
1. DILUTE WITH A CARRIER OIL. Use of a carrier oil will not
dilute the effect of the essential oil but will ensure that oils applied topically
are not irritating or overpowering.
2. NEVER USE WATER IF YOU EXPERIENCE
IRRITATION. If essential oils get in your eyes or cause irritation to
the skin, flush and dilute with a safe carrier oil to alleviate discomfort.
3. DON’T APPLY ESSENTIAL OILS TO SENSITIVE
AREAS. We recommend that you avoid applying essential oils to
sensitive areas such as eyes, ears and mucous membranes.
25. Where do we go from here?
• This has the potential to benefit our residents, staff and families,
but we’ll need your support and commitment to giving it our best
shot. Document the results and be willing to keep trying various
options. It may take some experimentation to find the best oils for
an individual.
• Homme Home chose to do workshops for families and the
community on essential oils with a person who was trained in the
use of essential oils. We could offer this if there is an interest.
• Homme Home also sold essential oils to staff and families and all
proceeds from such sales currently support the purchase of oils and
supplies for their essential oil program. This is also a possibility for
Bethany.
• We’ll keep you posted!
