• Unintentional pedestrian injuries are the fifth
leading cause of injury-related death in the
United States for children ages 5 to 19.

Why is Pedestrian Safety Important?
• There are a lot of simple things you can do when
around the road and moving cars that go a long
way to prevent unintentional pedestrian injury.
• Learning these skills early helps to set in motion
habits of safety in these important areas of life.

Pedestrian Safety Tips
• Look left, right, left.
• Keep looking as you cross the street.
• Walk across, do not run.

• Cross streets safely.
• Cross at a corner, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
• Try to make eye-contact with drivers before crossing in
front of them.
• Don’t assume that because you can see the driver, they
can see you.

• Walk on sidewalks or paths.
• If there are no paths, walk facing traffic as far to the left
as possible.

• Be a safe pedestrian around cars.
• Watch for cars who are turning around or backing up.
• Hold hands with a parent in parking lots and when
crossing streets.

• Children under 10 should not cross the road
alone.
• Adult supervision is important to be sure your child is
safe until their traffic skills and judgement is sound.

• Children should walk direct routes to their
destination and with the fewest street crossings.
• Walking this way helps to ensure they know where they
are going, and eliminates unnecessary distractions or
stops.

• Make sure children know to cross 10 feet in front
of a school bus, never behind, and to wait for
adults on the same side of the street as the
loading/unloading zone.

• Teach your child never to run into the street for a
ball, toy, pet or any other reason.
• This helps to be sure they are not rushing into traffic
without checking for cars first.
• Teach your child never to cross between parked
cars.
• Crossing in this way means you are unable to see
oncoming cars, and they are unable to see you.

• Make sure your child plays in a safe location, far away
from cars. Good examples of these places are:
• Yards
• Playgrounds
• Parks
• Be sure to fence off these play areas from streets
and driveways.

• Buy clothing and accessories that are equipped
with retroreflective material to wear at dawn and
dusk, in the evenings, and other low-light
situations such as rain or fog.

• Eliminate distractions when around cars, these
distractions can be things like:
• Music/headphones
• Texting/other phone activities
• Playing games/rough-housing
• Activities like these pull your attention from the
road and moving cars and can result in
unintentional injury.

• If kids need to use a cell phone, teach them to
stop walking and find a safe area to talk.
• Away from the road.
• Not in the middle of a walkway.
• Be aware of others who may be distracted and
speak up when you see someone who is in
danger.

• Be especially alert and slow down when driving in
residential neighborhoods and school zones.
• Be on the lookout for bikers, walkers or runners
who may be distracted or may step into the street
unexpectedly.

• Parents are the BEST model for proper pedestrian
safety.
• Keep yourself safe, and teach your child why pedestrian
safety is so important.
