With the start of a new season, and specifically the spring season, people seem to come
out of their winter shells and start prepping for the warmer days of summer. (We’ll just
ignore the fact that the days are quite warm enough right now.)
April has a lot of milestones, many of which people look forward to, and at least one of
which many folks dread. Let’s start with the good news.
EasteriscominguponApril5,thebiggestcandydayoutsideofHalloween.Eastermeans
that the stores are filling up with those malted robin’s egg candies that I like so much, and
if I hurry on April 6, I can catch them on sale before they’re all gone.
April 22 is Earth Day. An informal holiday established in 1970, Earth Day provides an
opportunity for people to reflect on what they can do to help the planet, or how they can
avoiddamagingtheplanet.Toaidyourplanetpreservationefforts,thismonth’smagazine
offers some suggestions for ‘greening’ your cleaning methods.
Another event, or more properly series of events, coming up this month is Bay Area
Dance Week which runs from April 24 to May 3. An offshoot of National Dance Week,
BADW, now in its 17th year, spotlights the diversity of the Bay Area’s dance community.
You can find out about dance week events at www.bayareandw.org
Finally, we come to the one day this month so many people dread, April 15. All I can say
about Tax Day is, if you haven’t finished your taxes yet, you should probably get started.
With that piece of advice out of the way, I shall bid you adieu until next month.
Have a wonderful April!
Best Wishes,

Sareeka Malhotra has a busy schedule. We are on the phone after several
daysofasynchronouscommunicationviaemail.Aresearchandinnovation
evangelist by profession, she describes her work with Symantec, helping

job, “[taking] care of a shy shih tzu and a not-so-shy five year old.”
Between her roles as Silicon Valley professional and full-time mom—in
a task that might sound as impossible as walking between raindrops—
Sareeka finds time to occupy another role, several of them actually, as a
stage and film artist.

for lots of extracurricular activities, including stage work in school plays.

to bring that feeling to the foreground.
After earning her MBA in India, Sareeka came to the U.S. (and went
on to earn a second master’s degree). One day, she happened to see an
advertisement for “Vande Mataram,” a stage production by Naatak.
Founded in 1995, Naatak (www.naatak.com) is one of the largest Indian
theater companies in America. After going to the show, Sareeka was
impressed to see people in the U.S. doing such good Indian theater.
She immediately joined the company’s mailing list, and when her email
delivered notice of an open audition for a play called “Talaash Vajoodon
Ki” she decided to respond.

theater companies like A’shore, Woman’s Will, Asian American Theater,

“I enjoy event management and juggling a lot of things. As the producer,
I was responsible for everything from sales, marketing, and publicity to

from A to Z, but there’s a lot of teamwork.”
One of her productions was a ‘Naatak in a Room’ production called
“Muavazey,” based on a celebrated script by Bhisham Sahni. The play was
performed in a very intimate space in the style of a street play, with the
audience reaction almost becoming part of the performance.

“In India it is very common. Street plays, that’s how they are referred to
there. When you have some relevant issue to talk about, it’s very easy to
attract the attention of the general public by just standing in the road and
talking about it, performing in front of any audience you can. It could
be social issues, equality, women’s rights; people will stand on the street,
sing, dance—make sure they get people’s attention. The theme of my play

radio show about parenting called “Baby Matters,” which aired on KLOK

“I found a sponsor in my dentist friend Dr. Navjyot, produced it myself,
had guests on, and talked about a range of topics from summer camps to
parenting a child with disabilities. It was my small way of giving back to
the community while deriving a lot of satisfaction in the process.”

Oscar-nominated performance by Audrey Hepburn) is a suspense thriller.

“It was an interesting experience playing someone who can’t see, while I
could see everything on stage. I did research to find out what it’s like to be
in the shoes of someone who doesn’t perceive things as I do. In the end,
the experience of playing the role was both challenging and extremely
gratifying.”
In addition to her stage work, Sareeka is a voice-over artist. She has also
appeared in a few local films, including “The Family Party,” a short film
by director Pari Mathur about the culture clash between Americanized
teenagers who want to attend a party and their traditional parents who
insist they attend a somber religious ceremony instead.
“The beauty of being in the bay area is there’s so much talent and so little
that people need to get their dream into action/reality.”

Education Spotlight:Antoinette Battiste
There’s lots of chatter these days about the newly designed SAT,
scheduled to go live in Spring 2016. Students in the Class of 2017
– current high school sophomores – will be the first students
affected. The changes reflect a move towards greater alignment
with Common Core Standards. Many experts in the field of
standardized testing describe the new SAT as significantly more
difficult than the current version of the test. So what exactly is
changing about the SAT? Here are a few highlights…
Scoring – The SAT will return to the 1600 point scoring scale.
Subscores for reading, writing, math, and science will be provided
and the 1/4 point deduction for wrong answers is being eliminated!
Format and Length – There will be four sections (Reading,
Writing, Math, No Calculator Math) plus an optional writing
section. However, the total time for the test remains the same, 3
hours 45 minutes.
Evidence-based Reading and Writing – Sentence completions
are gone. Students will be required to read longer passages from
the disciplines of science, literature, and humanities, to test their
knowledge of grammar in the context of the passages read. A new
twist is the Global Conversation portion which requires students to
engage in critical analysis and deeper understanding of founding
documents such as the Declaration of Independence.
Math – There is a stronger emphasis on algebra and significantly
less focus on geometry. The questions require students to
demonstrate their ability to problem solve using multiple steps, as
well as apply their mathematical skills to real world situations.
Science – The new SAT will incorporate tables, charts, and graphs
and test takers will need to find correlations, plot points, and
manipulate data. Science items will be incorporated throughout
both the verbal and math sections.
Essay – There will be a 50-minute optional essay focusing on
critical analysis skills, where facts, not student opinions, are
emphasized. The writing prompt makes this very clear and
concludes with “Your essay should not explain whether you agree
with the author’s claims, but rather explain how the author builds
an argument to persuade his audience.”
The Elephant in The Room – The New Sat
Test Prep – The College Board is partnering with Khan Academy
to provide free, comprehensive test preparation. This will be a
huge benefit to many students who need, but cannot afford test
prep. Khan Academy will have College Board-endorsed practice
material, and Khan will offer diagnostic baseline tests to generate
personalized practice plans for students.
Recently I attended a counselor college tour in Texas, along with 50
other counselors. The new SAT was definitely a topic of discussion!
At each of the 8 schools we toured, college admission reps were
asked if they would accept scores from the current SAT or require
students to take the new SAT, and how super-scoring might
occur. Several of the schools had not made a final determination
of how they would handle scores from the old and new versions,
however most indicated a leaning towards accepting either. One
big unknown was whether the writing component of the new SAT
would be required. Stay tuned!
More students than ever are taking the ACT – the other college
entrance exam – and there is speculation that this trend will
continue with the rollout of the new SAT. The last opportunity
students will have to take the current SAT is January 2016. In
these times of uncertainty, students should definitely consider all
of their testing options, including taking the current SAT as well
as the ACT.
To read more about the redesigned SAT, here are a few links: www.
khanacademy.org/sat, collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat-suite-
assessments/sat, and www.applerouth.com/experts. Good luck!

9 Smart Uses for Your
Tax Refund
If you've finished your tax returns and discovered you’ll be receiving
a nice refund, you are not alone. The average IRS refund was about
$2,900 in 2014. But before you dream up ways to spend that money,
think of how helpful this “extra paycheck” could be. Here are nine
ways to use your refund wisely:
1. Pay off your debt. Whether you’re making payments on a car loan,
education loans, a mortgage or high interest credit cards, use your
refund to make a dent in what you owe.
2. Boost your emergency fund. Experts recommend stashing the
equivalent of three to six months’ worth of income in an emergency
fund. If your account is low, has been depleted or doesn't exist yet,
your refund could help you cover expenses in an emergency.
3. Ramp up retirement savings. According to the Pew Research
Center, approximately 38 percent of U.S. adults are not confident
they’ll have the money to retire. If you’ve gotten behind in your
savings, your tax refund might help you catch up. Not only that,
you’ll get to enjoy watching how far that money can go when it’s
accruing interest.
4. Start or add to a college fund. Even if your kids are young, those
college tuition bills will be arriving before you know it—and they’ll
likely be larger than you expect! Seek out an education savings plan
and get a head start on your child’s education.
5. Make an investment. Consider putting your refund money to
work for you.
6. Improve your efficiency. Investing in home improvements can pay
off in reduced energy bills. For example, replacing an old refrigerator
with a new ENERGY STAR®-rated unit can save you $200 to $1,100
over the lifetime of the appliance. Some energy-efficient upgrades
may help you get a discount from your utility company as well.
7. Bolster your life insurance. If it’s been a while since you reviewed
your insurance coverage, you may find you’re underinsured.
8. Invest in yourself. Have you put off continuing education because
you didn't have the funds? Your refund might provide a good start
toward tuition. (Even better: Earning a higher certification could
lead to a raise or promotion!) You also could make an investment
in your health: Get a personal trainer, update your home exercise
equipment or join a gym.
9. Be generous. Find a cause or organization that you feel strongly
about and donate your refund to it. Your contribution, added to
others, could make a bigger impact than you think.

investment advice. Please consult your tax, legal or investment advisor

It’s eight o’clock, you’re ready to walk out the door with your
preschooler and suddenly you realize today is picture day. The kids
aren’t wearing anything you really want in a portrait and their hair,
well let’s just say it’s a bad hair day. Much to your surprise when the
portraits return your kids look so cute! While you went to work Lil’
Angels Photography combed hair and dressed your kids in outfits.
Lil’ Angels Photography specializes in school portraits with flair. We
come to your children’s preschool, dress them in unique outfits and
take their portrait. Expect them to tell you stories at home about being
a firefighter or a ladybug because they have a great time playing dress
up. Parents have no obligation to purchase and when the prints return
three weeks after photo day they are already cleaned up and ready to
hang on the wall and share with family and friends. All prints come
from a professional laboratory on high quality photographic paper that
will last beyond your lifetime. Your school benefits because Lil’ Angels
Photography donates 10% of package sales back to your school.

For the past three months we have looked at some signs your parent/s
need more help, and the different care options available. Now that you
realize they need more care, how do you convince them it’s time to
move? This is rarely an easy conversation to have. Maybe some of this
sounds familiar when you broached the subject of looking at a few
assisted living communities. “This is my house and I’m not leaving. I
can take care of myself. Why can’t you just leave me alone?”
This can be very frustrating for you. But, remember, they may feel
you are trying to take away ALL of their independence. This is an
emotional journey that may bring out fear, anger and depression.
The bottom line is to think about what will be best for your parent/s
safety and care needs. So many of my clients wait until their parent/s
have a fall before convincing them that it is time to move. Falls can be
catastrophic and many elderly end up in the hospital and are released
with worsening dementia and an increase in care needs.
No two families are alike, but here are some ideas to consider when
convincing your parent/s that it’s time to make a change.
1. Plan for the future. Know in advance that it will take several “little
discussions” to get parents used to even hearing about a move. Even
if your parent doesn’t seem to hear you, they are taking in bits of
information. Many people need time to intellectually and emotionally
process thoughts.
2. Present the plan for the move in an optimistic, honest, adult-
adult manner. “Mom, this community will provide you with comfort
knowing there are always people around to help you if you need it”.
3. Name some of the benefits of moving, such as not having to maintain
such a large home or taking care of the yard.
4. Patience is the key with a stubborn parent. Remember, you are
asking them to make a huge change in their life. Never Demand they
make a change, but ask their opinion concerning their options.
5. Get professional advice from their Physician. Many seniors respect
the opinion of their doctors.
6. Enlist support from their friends, minister, rabbi, family members
or others they trust and respect. These people can also offer
encouragement for the move.
7. Remember that this doesn’t have to be permanent. All communities
offer a 30 day notice to move out and operate on a month to month
contract.
8. Assure your parent that you will help them to make their new
residence feel like home by hanging family photos, artwork, and
decorating the way they would like it.
Remember to take things slowly. They may have lived in their current
home for 50+ years so they will need time to process this emotional
decision. Assure them that you love them and that you are only
interested in keeping them safe and getting them the best care possible.

“Be the change that you wish to see in the
world.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi
I once thought of myself as living in a box. I loved my box. My box
was safe and comfortable. I conformed to living my life based on the
rules, structures, and values of my upbringing without questioning.
My family, friends, church, clubs, and work were all a part of my box.
In my box, I knew exactly what I would and would not do. I became
very stringent in my way of being and very rigid in my body—I was
stuck. What became possible for me was to step outside my box and
behold all life had in store for me.
Think for a minute…what is possible for you? What is possible if you
had no fears? What is possible if there were no restraints on your life
and you had all the resources you needed? What is possible for you to
be… to do… to have?
Employ the following three actions, in order to intervene in the process
of getting stuck and see the possibility to spring forward.
1. New Awareness. Reflect upon actions and results to gain insight.
Reflections brings awareness, awareness is the beginning of discovery.
2. New Behavior. Ask yourself what observable behavior you want
to interrupt. Find a new behavior to replace the old. New actionable
behavior produces a change in our being.
3. New Relationship. Develop a relationship to hold you in the new
behavior. Accountability in a relationship, be it a coaching relationship
or support network, can hold you to new behavior.
Today, I’m no longer in the box. I am “Alice” who has stepped into
“Wonderland,” and there is a whole world to engage with. I can go
where I want to go. I can do what I want to do. I can be who I want to
be. There is Possibility in Springing Forward!

10th grader Sophia Lau, a Dance Theatre International company member,
just earned first place and an “Einstein Award” in this year’s Sciencepalooza!
Sciencepalooza! is an annual science fair exclusively for students of San
Jose’s East Side Union High School District. Every year, approximately
1,000 students make their way to the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds to
participate and have their science projects judged by professionals from
businesses, schools, and universities throughout Silicon Valley.
Here, Sophia talks about the science fair and how her study of ballet aided
her science studies.
The science project I conducted was extremely meticulous and time
consuming. Time management was essential when it came to ensuring its
success. It was definitely challenging to be able to fit something that required
so many hours of focus into my busy schedule, therefore it increasingly
required an intuitive and creative mindset.
I expected that ballet would be something that I would benefit from as a side
interest, but I definitely did not expect to become so attached and committed
to it. It grew from a hobby into an entirely new part of me. Three years ago, I
never would have guessed that I would be where I am today.
I now appreciate the immense work that goes into making something so
difficult look so effortless. My ballet training, specifically with Mr. and Mrs.
FerlaatDanceTheatreInternational,isverydetail-orientedandisaneffortto
strive towards giving the best you can.
Everyone at DTI definitely shows a
real passion which is one of the most
important aspects to being successful
not only in dance, but also in life.
Ballet taught me time management,
dedication, discipline, importance
of prioritizing, determination, and
organization when it comes to
balancing.

The United States has always been a nation of immigrants. That
description also reflects the population of Santa Clara County. We
are a county of immigrants, historically and currently.
In size, the immigrant communities make up 60 percent of the
County’s population of 1.8 million, including U.S.-born children
of immigrants. That makes our county one of the most diverse in
the nation. At least 100 languages and dialects are spoken here and
more than 50 percent of County residents speak a language other
than English at home.
As I said in my State of the County address in January, we consider
this diversity an asset. It makes us who we are. But it also demands
that we respond to the needs of our diverse community, including
our immigrants.
That’s why Supervisor Cindy Chavez and I proposed creating an
Office of Immigrant Relations, which will come before the full
Board of Supervisors in April. The new office would continue to
provide services to immigrants but also focus on collaborating
with service providers, analyzing the needs and contributions of
immigrant communities, keeping an eye on changes in laws and,
most importantly, getting the information out to the community.
The office’s immediate mission would be to help residents eligible
for the immigration reforms launched by President Obama in
November 2014 – the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
(DACA) and the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and
Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA). All applications must be
processed by the end of 2016.
These recent and legislative changes in immigration are positive but
can also be confusing for the estimated 70,000 residents eligible for
these programs. We need to be sure that our immigrant populations
receive accurate and understandable information. Even though
DACA is being delayed by a court injunction, fraudulent notarios
are preying on residents, giving them false information and taking
their money with no results. Recently, the board approved a plan to
allocate $1.8 million in one-time funding for information and legal
services to help residents through the process.
But there are many other services the Office of Immigrant Relations
could provide to help all of our immigrants integrate and be
successful in our communities, including advising the Board of
Supervisors so that we have thorough and updated information
before we make decisions about programs that will affect all
residents in Santa Clara County.
You may have some ideas or concerns of your own. Please call my
office at 408-299-5030 or email me at dave.cortese@bos.sccgov.org.
You can also visit www.immigrantinfo.org/info for updated research
and resources on Santa Clara County immigrants.

Clients often ask me what they can and cannot take onboard their
flight. What ARE you allowed to bring onboard?
Think 3-1-1! You are allowed to bring 3.4 ounces of liquids, gels,
aerosols, creams and pastes in a 1 quart sized plastic Ziploc and only
1 per passenger through the security checkpoint.
Medications, baby formula/food, and breast milk over 3 ounces are
allowed and they do not have to be in Ziploc bags
The TSA has a Mobile App at www.tsa.gov/mobile that provides
24/7 access to frequently asked questions. You can check whether
an item is permitted or not for carry-on of if it must be checked. In
addition, you can search security wait times and check an airport’s
flight status.
Another question often asked is what is required for identification
on a flight.
Passengers 18 and over must show valid identification upon check
in and through security checkpoints. Basically, a valid government
issued driver’s license, or a U.S. Passport or Passport Card. There
are additional forms of ID that are accepted. Please visit the TSA
website at www.tsa.gov for more information.
The TSA began the Secure Flight program for 100% of domestic
and foreign airlines with flights into, out of, and within the U.S. in
November 2010. It requires that all passengers provide their full
name, date of birth, and gender. This is to reduce the number of
passengers misidentified as a match to the watch list. A major goal
of the program is to reduce inconveniences and save passengers
time with issues at the ticket counter.
The TSA has created a system for passengers that travel frequently
to expedite the check in and security process. It is called TSA Pre✓.

Traveler Number, those who have been invited by a participating
airline, members of the U.S. Armed Forces. All members of Global

There are currently eleven carriers that participate in the TSA
Pre✓ program. They are Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American
Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways,
Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, United Airlines, US
Airways, and Virgin America. The program is available at more
than 120 U.S. airports.
I hope this information is a useful tool in preparing you for your

All the information I have provided has come from the TSA website.
I highly recommend visiting if you have any further questions

New Seasons News: New Seasons Market
Cleaning products are everywhere in our homes and offices.
We use them on dishes, countertops, furniture, clothes, floors,
and windows. In our war on dirt and germs, we may actually be
making things worse.
Most of the conventional cleaning products we grew up with are
petroleum-based and have dubious health and environmental
implications. Instead of opting for cleaning products that could
annihilate everything in their path, try natural alternatives that
can be as effective as the products currently be under your sink
Why Choose Green Cleaning Products?
• Studies suggest that chronic exposure to cleaning products has
a correlation with higher cancer rates. (The Seventh Generation
Guide to a Toxin Free Home)
• More than 90% of household cleaning agents have never been
tested for their effects on human health. (Breast Cancer Fund)
•	Household cleaning products rank among the most toxic
everyday substances to which people are exposed. (Raymond
Francis, M.Sc., Never Be Sick Again)

Burton, herself a senior, (although she much prefers to be called vintage), is the
director of a project called My Life, My Story, My Legacy. She is seeking seniors
who would write, or be interviewed for one of their favorite stories, and each
would be a chapter in a book or audio book.
Growing up, Danni was greatly influenced by the stories that sustained her
through her childhood and teenage years. And, today, many young people do
not have that legacy, as they are not able to visit or learn from their seniors for
any number of reasons.
There is such wonderful wisdom that comes with age, experience, and life’s
teachings. The project is to collect these stories about overcoming adversity,
inspiration, and hope, and humorous learnings. And, each story becomes one
of 20 chapters in the book, and part of a special documentary about the legacy
of passing on ideas, insights and funny ways of looking at life. And, with the
generousfundingsheseeksfortheproject,Danniwillbecontributingthebooks
andaudiobookstoshelters,rehabcentersandplacesofsupportforchildrenand
adults to offer inspiration, hope, encouragement and a chance to have laughter
in the midst of challenge.
Are you a senior with great stories? Do you know others who have a great
attitude or humorous way to look at adversity? Danni and her team would
like to hear from those with stories, and those inspired by the idea of paying
it forward. This is another wonderful way to know, relate, and appreciate each
other in our communities, and honor the great wisdom, ideas, and inspiration
gifted to us from someone we meet through a book or tape.
Please feel free to contact Danni, to share your story or feedback or ideas. And,
by the way, she herself is a very entertaining Scottish storyteller!

  • 3. April 2015 | 3 With the start of a new season, and specifically the spring season, people seem to come out of their winter shells and start prepping for the warmer days of summer. (We’ll just ignore the fact that the days are quite warm enough right now.) April has a lot of milestones, many of which people look forward to, and at least one of which many folks dread. Let’s start with the good news. EasteriscominguponApril5,thebiggestcandydayoutsideofHalloween.Eastermeans that the stores are filling up with those malted robin’s egg candies that I like so much, and if I hurry on April 6, I can catch them on sale before they’re all gone. April 22 is Earth Day. An informal holiday established in 1970, Earth Day provides an opportunity for people to reflect on what they can do to help the planet, or how they can avoiddamagingtheplanet.Toaidyourplanetpreservationefforts, thismonth’smagazine offers some suggestions for ‘greening’ your cleaning methods. Another event, or more properly series of events, coming up this month is Bay Area Dance Week which runs from April 24 to May 3. An offshoot of National Dance Week, BADW, now in its 17th year, spotlights the diversity of the Bay Area’s dance community. You can find out about dance week events at www.bayareandw.org Finally, we come to the one day this month so many people dread, April 15. All I can say about Tax Day is, if you haven’t finished your taxes yet, you should probably get started. With that piece of advice out of the way, I shall bid you adieu until next month. Have a wonderful April! Best Wishes, Eme O. Akpabio Content Coordinator eakpabio@bestversionmedia.com www.facebook.com/evergreenspotlight. • 5. April 2015 | 5 Sareeka Malhotra has a busy schedule. We are on the phone after several daysofasynchronouscommunicationviaemail.Aresearchandinnovation evangelist by profession, she describes her work with Symantec, helping thecompanycreatemoreuser-friendlyproductsbythinkingoutsideofthe box, as her day job. As we speak, she is in the middle of her other full-time job, “[taking] care of a shy shih tzu and a not-so-shy five year old.” Between her roles as Silicon Valley professional and full-time mom—in a task that might sound as impossible as walking between raindrops— Sareeka finds time to occupy another role, several of them actually, as a stage and film artist. While she excelled at her studies, she found time for lots of extracurricular activities, including stage work in school plays. Shebelievesshehadtheactingbugeventhen,butittookamovetotheU.S. to bring that feeling to the foreground. After earning her MBA in India, Sareeka came to the U.S. (and went on to earn a second master’s degree). One day, she happened to see an advertisement for “Vande Mataram,” a stage production by Naatak. Founded in 1995, Naatak (www.naatak.com) is one of the largest Indian theater companies in America. After going to the show, Sareeka was impressed to see people in the U.S. doing such good Indian theater. She immediately joined the company’s mailing list, and when her email delivered notice of an open audition for a play called “Talaash Vajoodon Ki” she decided to respond. “Lotsofpeopleshowedup,”sherecalls.“Itwasaprettyintenseaffair.Ittook a whole day to finalize the cast but in the end I earned a very powerful woman-centered role, an articulate doctor who challenges deep-rooted attitudes and beliefs related to gender inequality.” Since making her stage debut in 2000, Sareeka has branched out to other theater companies like A’shore, Woman’s Will, Asian American Theater, REST WELL IN YOUR BEDTIME- COMES-SOONER-WHEN-YOU-HAVE- NO-HOUSEWORK ROOM YOUR FIRST CLEAN. As the producer, I was responsible for everything from sales, marketing, and publicity to ticketing, costumes, and props. The producer is responsible for everything from A to Z, but there’s a lot of teamwork.” One of her productions was a ‘Naatak in a Room’ production called “Muavazey,” based on a celebrated script by Bhisham Sahni. The play was performed in a very intimate space in the style of a street play, with the audience reaction almost becoming part of the performance. Resident Spotlight: Eme O. • 6. 6 | Evergreen Spotlight Story continued “In India it is very common. Street plays, that’s how they are referred to there. When you have some relevant issue to talk about, it’s very easy to attract the attention of the general public by just standing in the road and talking about it, performing in front of any audience you can. It could be social issues, equality, women’s rights; people will stand on the street, sing, dance—make sure they get people’s attention. In the end, the experience of playing the role was both challenging and extremely gratifying.” In addition to her stage work, Sareeka is a voice-over artist. She has also appeared in a few local films, including “The Family Party,” a short film by director Pari Mathur about the culture clash between Americanized teenagers who want to attend a party and their traditional parents who insist they attend a somber religious ceremony instead. “The beauty of being in the bay area is there’s so much talent and so little that people need to get their dream into action/reality.” • Diamond Certified • No Insurance - No Problem, $189 In-House Membership (Call for details) • Implant Dentistry • Sedation Dentistry • Braces - 6 months braces, Invisalign • Cosmetic Dentistry • Family Dentistry America’s Best Dentist 2014 National Consumer Advisory Board 3151 S. Students in the Class of 2017 – current high school sophomores – will be the first students affected. The changes reflect a move towards greater alignment with Common Core Standards. Many experts in the field of standardized testing describe the new SAT as significantly more difficult than the current version of the test. So what exactly is changing about the SAT? Here are a few highlights… Scoring – The SAT will return to the 1600 point scoring scale. Subscores for reading, writing, math, and science will be provided and the 1/4 point deduction for wrong answers is being eliminated! Format and Length – There will be four sections (Reading, Writing, Math, No Calculator Math) plus an optional writing section. However, the total time for the test remains the same, 3 hours 45 minutes. Evidence-based Reading and Writing – Sentence completions are gone. Students will be required to read longer passages from the disciplines of science, literature, and humanities, to test their knowledge of grammar in the context of the passages read. A new twist is the Global Conversation portion which requires students to engage in critical analysis and deeper understanding of founding documents such as the Declaration of Independence. Math – There is a stronger emphasis on algebra and significantly less focus on geometry. The questions require students to demonstrate their ability to problem solve using multiple steps, as well as apply their mathematical skills to real world situations. Science – The new SAT will incorporate tables, charts, and graphs and test takers will need to find correlations, plot points, and manipulate data. Science items will be incorporated throughout both the verbal and math sections. Essay – There will be a 50-minute optional essay focusing on critical analysis skills, where facts, not student opinions, are emphasized. The writing prompt makes this very clear and concludes with “Your essay should not explain whether you agree with the author’s claims, but rather explain how the author builds an argument to persuade his audience.” The Elephant in The Room – The New Sat Test Prep – The College Board is partnering with Khan Academy to provide free, comprehensive test preparation. This will be a huge benefit to many students who need, but cannot afford test prep. Khan Academy will have College Board-endorsed practice material, and Khan will offer diagnostic baseline tests to generate personalized practice plans for students. Recently I attended a counselor college tour in Texas, along with 50 other counselors. The new SAT was definitely a topic of discussion! At each of the 8 schools we toured, college admission reps were asked if they would accept scores from the current SAT or require students to take the new SAT, and how super-scoring might occur. Several of the schools had not made a final determination of how they would handle scores from the old and new versions, however most indicated a leaning towards accepting either. One big unknown was whether the writing component of the new SAT would be required. Stay tuned! More students than ever are taking the ACT – the other college entrance exam – and there is speculation that this trend will continue with the rollout of the new SAT. The last opportunity students will have to take the current SAT is January 2016. In these times of uncertainty, students should definitely consider all of their testing options, including taking the current SAT as well as the ACT. To read more about the redesigned SAT, here are a few links: www. khanacademy.org/sat, collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat-suite- assessments/sat, and www.applerouth.com/experts. Good luck! The average IRS refund was about $2,900 in 2014. But before you dream up ways to spend that money, think of how helpful this “extra paycheck” could be. Here are nine ways to use your refund wisely: 1. Pay off your debt. Whether you’re making payments on a car loan, education loans, a mortgage or high interest credit cards, use your refund to make a dent in what you owe. 2. Boost your emergency fund. Experts recommend stashing the equivalent of three to six months’ worth of income in an emergency fund. If your account is low, has been depleted or doesn't exist yet, your refund could help you cover expenses in an emergency. 3. Ramp up retirement savings. According to the Pew Research Center, approximately 38 percent of U.S. adults are not confident they’ll have the money to retire. If you’ve gotten behind in your savings, your tax refund might help you catch up. Not only that, you’ll get to enjoy watching how far that money can go when it’s accruing interest. 4. Start or add to a college fund. Even if your kids are young, those college tuition bills will be arriving before you know it—and they’ll likely be larger than you expect! Seek out an education savings plan and get a head start on your child’s education. 5. Make an investment. Consider putting your refund money to work for you. 6. Improve your efficiency. Investing in home improvements can pay off in reduced energy bills. For example, replacing an old refrigerator with a new ENERGY STAR®-rated unit can save you $200 to $1,100 over the lifetime of the appliance. Some energy-efficient upgrades may help you get a discount from your utility company as well. 7. Bolster your life insurance. If it’s been a while since you reviewed your insurance coverage, you may find you’re underinsured. 8. Invest in yourself. Have you put off continuing education because you didn't have the funds? Your refund might provide a good start toward tuition. (Even better: Earning a higher certification could lead to a raise or promotion!) You also could make an investment in your health: Get a personal trainer, update your home exercise equipment or join a gym. 9. Be generous. Find a cause or organization that you feel strongly about and donate your refund to it. Your contribution, added to others, could make a bigger impact than you think. Neither State Farm nor State Farm agents provide tax, legal or investment advice. Please consult your tax, legal or investment advisor regarding your specific circumstances. Finance: Lillian Moore

HealthandWellness:Cristie Burr For the past three months we have looked at some signs your parent/s need more help, and the different care options available. Now that you realize they need more care, how do you convince them it’s time to move? This is rarely an easy conversation to have. Maybe some of this sounds familiar when you broached the subject of looking at a few assisted living communities. “This is my house and I’m not leaving. I can take care of myself. Why can’t you just leave me alone?” This can be very frustrating for you. But, remember, they may feel you are trying to take away ALL of their independence. This is an emotional journey that may bring out fear, anger and depression. The bottom line is to think about what will be best for your parent/s safety and care needs. So many of my clients wait until their parent/s have a fall before convincing them that it is time to move. Falls can be catastrophic and many elderly end up in the hospital and are released with worsening dementia and an increase in care needs. No two families are alike, but here are some ideas to consider when convincing your parent/s that it’s time to make a change. 1. Plan for the future. Know in advance that it will take several “little discussions” to get parents used to even hearing about a move. Even if your parent doesn’t seem to hear you, they are taking in bits of information. Many people need time to intellectually and emotionally process thoughts. 2. Present the plan for the move in an optimistic, honest, adult- adult manner. “Mom, this community will provide you with comfort knowing there are always people around to help you if you need it”. 3. Name some of the benefits of moving, such as not having to maintain such a large home or taking care of the yard. 4. Patience is the key with a stubborn parent. Remember, you are asking them to make a huge change in their life. Never Demand they make a change, but ask their opinion concerning their options. 5. Get professional advice from their Physician. Many seniors respect the opinion of their doctors. 6. Enlist support from their friends, minister, rabbi, family members or others they trust and respect. These people can also offer encouragement for the move. 7. Remember that this doesn’t have to be permanent. All communities offer a 30 day notice to move out and operate on a month to month contract. 8. Assure your parent that you will help them to make their new residence feel like home by hanging family photos, artwork, and decorating the way they would like it. Remember to take things slowly. They may have lived in their current home for 50+ years so they will need time to process this emotional decision. Assure them that you love them and that you are only interested in keeping them safe and getting them the best care possible. • 13. April 2015 | 13 Advanced Surgical Associates Advanced Surgical Associates “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi I once thought of myself as living in a box. I loved my box. My box was safe and comfortable. I conformed to living my life based on the rules, structures, and values of my upbringing without questioning. My family, friends, church, clubs, and work were all a part of my box. In my box, I knew exactly what I would and would not do. I became very stringent in my way of being and very rigid in my body—I was stuck. What became possible for me was to step outside my box and behold all life had in store for me. Think for a minute…what is possible for you? What is possible if you had no fears? What is possible if there were no restraints on your life and you had all the resources you needed? What is possible for you to be… to do… to have? Employ the following three actions, in order to intervene in the process of getting stuck and see the possibility to spring forward. 1. New Awareness. Reflect upon actions and results to gain insight. Reflections brings awareness, awareness is the beginning of discovery. 2. New Behavior. Ask yourself what observable behavior you want to interrupt. Find a new behavior to replace the old. New actionable behavior produces a change in our being. 3. New Relationship. Develop a relationship to hold you in the new behavior. Accountability in a relationship, be it a coaching relationship or support network, can hold you to new behavior. Today, I’m no longer in the box. Here, Sophia talks about the science fair and how her study of ballet aided her science studies. The science project I conducted was extremely meticulous and time consuming. Time management was essential when it came to ensuring its success. It was definitely challenging to be able to fit something that required so many hours of focus into my busy schedule, therefore it increasingly required an intuitive and creative mindset. I expected that ballet would be something that I would benefit from as a side interest, but I definitely did not expect to become so attached and committed to it. It grew from a hobby into an entirely new part of me. Three years ago, I never would have guessed that I would be where I am today. • 14. 14 | Evergreen Spotlight The United States has always been a nation of immigrants. That description also reflects the population of Santa Clara County. We are a county of immigrants, historically and currently. In size, the immigrant communities make up 60 percent of the County’s population of 1.8 million, including U.S.-born children of immigrants. That makes our county one of the most diverse in the nation. At least 100 languages and dialects are spoken here and more than 50 percent of County residents speak a language other than English at home. As I said in my State of the County address in January, we consider this diversity an asset. It makes us who we are. But it also demands that we respond to the needs of our diverse community, including our immigrants. That’s why Supervisor Cindy Chavez and I proposed creating an Office of Immigrant Relations, which will come before the full Board of Supervisors in April. The new office would continue to provide services to immigrants but also focus on collaborating with service providers, analyzing the needs and contributions of immigrant communities, keeping an eye on changes in laws and, most importantly, getting the information out to the community. The office’s immediate mission would be to help residents eligible for the immigration reforms launched by President Obama in November 2014 – the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA). All applications must be processed by the end of 2016. These recent and legislative changes in immigration are positive but can also be confusing for the estimated 70,000 residents eligible for these programs. We need to be sure that our immigrant populations receive accurate and understandable information. Even though DACA is being delayed by a court injunction, fraudulent notarios are preying on residents, giving them false information and taking their money with no results. Recently, the board approved a plan to allocate $1.8 million in one-time funding for information and legal services to help residents through the process. But there are many other services the Office of Immigrant Relations could provide to help all of our immigrants integrate and be successful in our communities, including advising the Board of Supervisors so that we have thorough and updated information before we make decisions about programs that will affect all residents in Santa Clara County. You may have some ideas or concerns of your own. Please call my office at 408-299-5030 or email me at dave.cortese@bos.sccgov.org. In Our Community: Supervisor Dave Cortese Santa Clara County Planning New Office of Immigrant Relations Clients often ask me what they can and cannot take onboard their flight. What ARE you allowed to bring onboard? Think 3-1-1! You are allowed to bring 3.4 ounces of liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes in a 1 quart sized plastic Ziploc and only 1 per passenger through the security checkpoint. Medications, baby formula/food, and breast milk over 3 ounces are allowed and they do not have to be in Ziploc bags The TSA has a Mobile App at www.tsa.gov/mobile that provides 24/7 access to frequently asked questions. You can check whether an item is permitted or not for carry-on of if it must be checked. In addition, you can search security wait times and check an airport’s flight status. Another question often asked is what is required for identification on a flight. Passengers 18 and over must show valid identification upon check in and through security checkpoints. Basically, a valid government issued driver’s license, or a U.S. Passport or Passport Card. There are additional forms of ID that are accepted. Please visit the TSA website at www.tsa.gov for more information. The TSA began the Secure Flight program for 100% of domestic and foreign airlines with flights into, out of, and within the U.S. in November 2010. It requires that all passengers provide their full name, date of birth, and gender. This is to reduce the number of passengers misidentified as a match to the watch list. A major goal of the program is to reduce inconveniences and save passengers time with issues at the ticket counter. The TSA has created a system for passengers that travel frequently to expedite the check in and security process. It is called TSA Pre✓. They are Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways, and Virgin America. The program is available at more than 120 U.S. airports. I hope this information is a useful tool in preparing you for your next flight and helps you navigate and expedite through the security check point process.
