Huge focus both nationally and locally on developing children’s speaking and listening. Many children are coming in to schools with poor communication skills. In some parts of the country more than half the children currently arriving in reception do so with impoverished language and communication skills. These are perfectly healthy 4 year olds but due to a range of factors they begin school without the speech and language skills they need to make friends and to learn.

Phase one falls largely within CLLD area of learning within EYFS. It particularly supports linking sounds ane letters in the roder in which they occur in words and sounds the letters of the alphabet. *it is only a contribution to EYFS CLLD and does not constitute the whole language provision.
