About 80% of all households in Malawi still depend on charcoal and firewood for their cooking requirements. In urban areas,
the rate of new settlements is moving much faster than the electricity grid can service their needs resulting in many urban
households resorting to purchasing small quantities of solid and liquid fuels for their cooking requirements. Electricity supplies
cannot meet demand due to inadequate investment in the sector, leading to erratic power supplies. With an average access to
electricity standing at 10% in the rural areas and 40% in urban areas, the need for alternative energy supplies to meet the
energy supply deficit cannot be overemphasized. One of the major barrier to adopting alternative energy sources such as
solar and LPG systems is the high up-front cost of purchasing the systems.
Octate Solutions Africa Limited is an organisation that has however seen an opportunity to introduce SenetecGas as a Pay-
As-You-Go (PAYGO) clean energy service to under-served communities in Malawi. SenetecGas is a smarter and simpler way
of quickly switching away from charcoal and firewood to reliable and efficient energy. By combining clean energy and mobile
payment innovation with efficient products, SenetecGas is bringing affordable, modern consumer goods and services to the
millions without access to reliable conventional power. The initiative is allowing both urban and peri-urban residents to be
energy efficient and live a greener lifestyle, while easing the burden on the power grid.
The SenetecGas System is a clean energy technology that allows customers to purchase LP gas on a Pay-As-You-Go
(PAYGO) basis removing cost barriers to clean cooking fuel for the under-served urban households. The system consists of
either a two-burner or a single burner stove, gas cylinder and a smart LPG meter equipped with machine-to-machine (M2M)
technology that measures the amount of gas being used at any given time. Customers access the gas by mobile money in
amounts that make sense to them. The valve on the smart meter closes when credit runs out and instantly reopening with a new
top up. With smart usage and location monitoring, the platform allows cylinders to be replaced before customers ever run out of
gas. By removing barriers to adoption, the SenetecGas technology and service hastened the speed at which customers
transition away from charcoal and firewood to clean cooking fuel. SenetecGas Systems are modular so customers are in a
position to choose a system that fits their needs and even upgrade their system as their incomes grow with added productivity
as well as energy savings.
