Finnish service design agency Kuudes Kerros participates in the Service Design Achievement of the Year 2015 competition with their project where they worked with the Aalto University Library to transform the library to a learning center.
After the merger of the three Universities, the library will re-invent itself as a Learning Center that will open in 2016. The Service Design project faced one major challenge: A tight timeline. The creative solution was to recruit and coach three SD teams that were comprised of librarians, researchers, students and other staff. The teams worked together to co-create the Aalto University Learning Center.

The Otaniemi library at Aalto University will undergo
a full renovation in order to cater for the demands of
a modern learning centre. Design Consultancy
Kuudes Kerros invites 6-8 students to joint the
service design team in perfecting the service
concept for the new centre.
The work will be done in three teams of four people, lead by a
service design professional from Kuudes Kerros. The project will
begin with brainstorming the service concept and then building
and testing it together with the coaches. The teams will consist
of representatives of the learning centre’s target groups. All
members will be potential users of the library or producers of
services in the learning centre. The work done in the service
design teams enables an active role in designing and developing
the new Aalto University campus area. This will also give students
and staff a unique opportunity to learn about service design in
practice.
The project will last from September 16th to mid-December 2013,
taking up approximately 10-12 active days during that period.
The work will include workshop days, target group interviews
and user interviews for testing the concepts. All work will be done
under the guidance of service design professionals.
