DATA VISUALIZATION
We have to answer two important questions
WHAT IS DATA VISUALIZATION? WHY IS DATA VISUALIZATION IMPORTANT?
WHAT IS DATA VISUALIZATION?
Data visualization is the process of describing information through visual rendering.
WHY IS DATA VISUALIZATION IMPORTANT?
• We are visual creatures and can understand visual information in an instant
• Data visualization is a quick, easy way to convey concepts in a universal manner –
you can experiment with different scenarios by making slight adjustments.
• Businesses realize that a visual can communicate more information than a data table
and requires lesser memory
• Data visualization leads to better understanding and allows for better business
decisions accurately and quickly.
IS DATA VISUALIZATION A NEW THING?
• It has been around for centuries, from maps and graphs in the 17th century
• The pie chart was invented in the early 1800s
• One of the most cited examples of statistical graphics dates back in 1869 when the French
engineer Charles Minard mapped Napoleon’s invasion of Russia
• Minard’s viz is considered one of the most influential data visualizations and one of the
world’s best info graphics
WHAT IS TABLEAU?
• Tableau Software is of software company headquartered in Seattle, Washington, United
States that produces interactive data visualization products focused on business
intelligence.
• Tableau is a Business Intelligence tool for visually analyzing the data.
• The software allows data blending and real time
collaboration which makes it very unique.
• Derived from French word tableaux which means
A group of models or motionless figures representing
a scene from a story or from history
Tableau queries a range of data including relational databases, OLAP cubes, cloud databases, and
spread sheets to generate a number of graph types
TABLEAU VS. OTHER BI VENDORS
• Tableau is an industry leader in
Business Intelligence and
Analytics
• Tableau was recognized as a
Leader in Gartner Magic
Quadrant for Business
Intelligence and Analytics
Platforms for Fifth Consecutive
Year in 2017
STEPS IN TABLEAU
TABLEAU FEATURES
• Rapid and Real-time analysis of data
• Handles Large amounts of data
• Quick and Interactive Visualizations
• Blending diverse data sets
• User-friendly and device-friendly Dashboards
• Integrates with Scripting Languages (R and Python)
• Allows creation of custom formulas
• Allowing to work on without high level technical knowledge
TABLEAU PRODUCTS
1. Tableau Desktop
• Has rich feature set and allows one to code and customize reports. Right from creating the charts, reports, to
blending them all together to form a dashboard, all the necessary work is created in Tableau Desktop.
• For live data analysis, Tableau Desktop provides connectivity to Data Warehouse, as well as other various types
of files.
Tableau Desktop is classified into
• Tableau Desktop Personal: keeps the workbook private, and the access is limited. The workbooks cannot be
published online.
• Tableau Desktop Professional: the work created can be published online or in Tableau Server. Also, in
Professional version, there is full access to all sorts of the data types.
2. Tableau Public
• It is Tableau version specially build for the cost-effective users. By the word "Public," it means that the
workbooks created cannot be saved locally, in turn, it should be saved to the Tableau's public cloud which can
be viewed and accessed by anyone.
• There is no privacy to the files saved to the cloud since anyone can download and access the same.
3. Tableau Server
• The software is specifically used to share the workbooks, visualizations that are created in
the Tableau Desktop application across the organization. To share dashboards in the
Tableau Server, you must first publish your work in the Tableau Desktop. Once the work has
been uploaded to the server, it will be accessible only to the licensed users.
• The licensed users just require the login credentials with which they can check reports via a
web browser. The security is high in Tableau server, and it is much suited for quick and
effective sharing of data in an organization.
• The admin of the organization will always have full control over the server. The hardware
and the software are maintained by the organization.
4. Tableau Online
• Online sharing tool of Tableau. Its functionalities are similar to Tableau Server, but the data is stored on
servers hosted in the cloud which are maintained by the Tableau group.
• There is no storage limit on the data that can be published in the Tableau Online. Tableau Online creates a
direct link to over 40 data sources that are hosted in the cloud such as the MySQL, Hive, Amazon Aurora,
Spark SQL and many more.
5. Tableau Reader
• Tableau Reader is a free tool which allows you to view the workbooks and visualizations created using
Tableau Desktop or Tableau Public. The data can be filtered but editing and modifications are restricted.
The security level is zero in Tableau Reader as anyone who gets the workbook can view it using Tableau
Reader.
• If you want to share the dashboards that you have created, the receiver should have Tableau Reader to
view the document.
ADVANTAGES
• Great data visualization
• Drag-drop functionalities
• Ease of implementation
– Easy to learn
• Can handle large amount of data with no compromise on performance
• Multi-device support and responsive customization
• No hardware cost & setup time is low
• Support live data connections
• Secure (Except Tableau Public)
DISADVANTAGES
• Scheduling of Reports:- Tableau does not provide the automatic schedule of reports.
That's why there is always some manual effort required when the user needs to
the data in the back end.
• No Custom Visual Imports:- Other tools like Power BI, a developer can create custom
visual that can be easily imported. In Tableau, that cannot be done.
• Custom Formatting in Tableau:- Tableau's conditional formatting is limited to 16
column table that is very inconvenient for users.
• Static and Single Value Parameter:- Tableau parameters are static, and always select a
single value as a parameter. Whenever the data gets changed, these parameters also
have to be updated manually every time.
THANK YOU
