Gonorrhea
What is gonorrhea?
According to Center of Disease Control
and Prevention gonorrhea also called
‘clap’ or ‘drip’ is a contagious disease
transmitted most often through sexual
contact with an infected person. It can
be spread by contact with infected
bodily fluid so a mother can pass it on to
her child. It is a commonly contracted
STI. more on gonorrhea.
What is Gonorrhea
Pictures of infected persons
Men and women can
acquire gonorrhea of
the throat as a result
of performing oral
sex with an infected
person
Rashes are one
symptom of
gonorrhea.
 Gonorrhea is caused by Neissseria
Gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that grows and
multiplies easily in the mucus membrane of
the body. It grows in most areas of
reproductive tract including:
Cervix uterus
Fallopian tubes
Uretha
Mouth, throat and anus
Causes of gonorrhea
Picture of Neissseria Gonorrhoeae
 The persons at risk of catching
gonorrhea are those persons that are
sexually active.
 As such the rate of persons getting
infected is highest among teenagers
and young adults ages 15-29 (Peter
Crosta M.A., 2014).
Who are the persons at risk of
catching gonorrhea?
Symptoms of Gonorrhea in Men and
Women
 The following steps are taken in the process of
diagnosing gonorrhea:
 Step 1: Is to be aware of the symptoms and
reporting to your doctor or a medical centre
for confirmation.
 Step 2: Your doctor or a professional health
care worker will take a discharge from the
uretha for men or from the cervix for women
and conduct tests.
 Step 3: After a few days the results to be
known and by then confirmation will also be
given.
Diagnosing Gonorrhea
Prevention and Cure
 Prevention:
1. Practice safe sex
2. Be responsible
3. Have one partner
4. Avoid sexual contact if
you have symptoms of
gonorrhea or have been
treated for gonorrhea.
Treatment:
1. Gonorrhea can be
treated through
prescribed medication
by doctor
2. Since it is a bacteria it
can also be treated by
taking antibiotics.
Gonorrhea Left Untreated
Because gonorrhea is a sexual transmitted disease
and many young people are having sex teenagers
have one of the highest risks of being infected
Not all persons with gonorrhea have symptoms
therefore it passed on without any awareness and is
not treated.
Some persons use various methods of treatments
because they are unaware that they have gonorrhea.
Persons with gonorrhea are easily prone to catching
HIV.
Effect of Gonorrhea on Society
 The incubation period for gonrrhea is 2-14
days while most symptoms may appear
between 4-6 days infection.
 Gonorrhea that affects the infants eyes during
childbirth is reffered to as ophthalma
neonatorum.
 Gonorrhea may occur with Chlamydia.
