4. What is gonorrhea?
According to Center of Disease Control
and Prevention gonorrhea also called
‘clap’ or ‘drip’ is a contagious disease
transmitted most often through sexual
contact with an infected person. It can
be spread by contact with infected
bodily fluid so a mother can pass it on to
her child. It is a commonly contracted
STI. more on gonorrhea.
What is Gonorrhea
8. Gonorrhea is caused by Neissseria
Gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that grows and
multiplies easily in the mucus membrane of
the body. It grows in most areas of
reproductive tract including:
Cervix uterus
Fallopian tubes
Uretha
Mouth, throat and anus
Causes of gonorrhea
10. The persons at risk of catching
gonorrhea are those persons that are
sexually active.
As such the rate of persons getting
infected is highest among teenagers
and young adults ages 15-29 (Peter
Crosta M.A., 2014).
Who are the persons at risk of
catching gonorrhea?
12. The following steps are taken in the process of
diagnosing gonorrhea:
Step 1: Is to be aware of the symptoms and
reporting to your doctor or a medical centre
for confirmation.
Step 2: Your doctor or a professional health
care worker will take a discharge from the
uretha for men or from the cervix for women
and conduct tests.
Step 3: After a few days the results to be
known and by then confirmation will also be
given.
Diagnosing Gonorrhea

Prevention:
1. Practice safe sex
2. Be responsible
3. Have one partner
4. Avoid sexual contact if
you have symptoms of
gonorrhea or have been
treated for gonorrhea.
Treatment:
1. Gonorrhea can be
treated through
prescribed medication
by doctor
2. Since it is a bacteria it
can also be treated by
taking antibiotics.
15. Because gonorrhea is a sexual transmitted disease
and many young people are having sex teenagers
have one of the highest risks of being infected
Not all persons with gonorrhea have symptoms
therefore it passed on without any awareness and is
not treated.
Some persons use various methods of treatments
because they are unaware that they have gonorrhea.
Persons with gonorrhea are easily prone to catching
HIV.
Effect of Gonorrhea on Society
16. The incubation period for gonrrhea is 2-14
days while most symptoms may appear
between 4-6 days infection.
Gonorrhea that affects the infants eyes during
childbirth is reffered to as ophthalma
neonatorum.
Gonorrhea may occur with Chlamydia.
