SUPERCOMPUTER:
The fastest type of computer. Supercomputers are very expensive and are employed for
specialized applications that require immense amounts of mathematical calculations. Most
supercomputers are really multiple computers that perform parallel processing.
USAGE OF SUPERCOMPUTER:
A supercomputer is typically used for scientific and engineering applications that must handle
very large databases or do a great amount of computation. Other uses of supercomputers include
animated graphics, fluid dynamic calculations, nuclear energy research, and petroleum
exploration.
WORLD’S NUMBER ONE SUPERCOMPUTER:
The Fujitsu K supercomputer of Japan is the world’s
number one supercomputer.
NAMING OF THE SUPERCOMPUTER K:
The number ten "peta," or 10 quadrillion corresponds to 1 followed by 16 zeros. In Japanese, this
is expressed as one "Kei." That is why this supercomputer is called the K computer.
MANUFACTURER OF SUPERCOMPUTER K:
The Super computer K is manufactured by the Japanese
company Fujitsu.
LOCATION OF SUPERCOMPUTER K:
The Supercomputer "K computer" is located on
the artificial island called Port Island in Kobe
city in Hyogo prefecture, Japan.

POWER OF SUPERCOMPUTER K:
Supercomputer K is the world’s most powerful supercomputer. It can calculate 10.51 quadrillion
computations per second.
PERFORMANCE AND EFFICTIENCY:
The K is currently the highest-performing supercomputer in the world, with a maximum speed of
10.5PFLOPS or 10.51 quadrillion computations per second and a total of 705,024 cores. It has
achieved this performance with a computing efficiency ratio of 93.2%.
SPEED:
The K computer can perform 10.51 quadrillion computations
per second. If all seven billion people in the world were
gathered together and given a calculator to perform one
calculation per second continuously for 24 hours per day
without rest, it would take approximately 17 days to complete
the number of calculations that the K computer is able to
perform in just one second. If we think of the calculation speed
of a regular computer as the speed of a snail, then the K
computer has the speed of a jet airplane.
POWER CONSUMPTION:
A lot of electrical power is needed to run a supercomputer. The electrical power used by the
Supercomputer "K computer" when measuring the benchmark for TOP500 list in November
2011 was 12.65989 MW/h.
EXPENSE:
The computer's annual running costs are estimated at US$10 million.
NETWORK:
The K computer uses a proprietary six-dimensional torus interconnect called Tofu, and a Tofuoptimized Message Passing Interface based on the open source open MPI library. Users can
create application programs adapted to either a one-, two-, or three-dimensional torus network.
FILE SYSTEM:
The system adopts a two-level local/global file system with parallel/distributed functions, and
provides users with an automatic staging function for moving files between global and local file
systems. Fujitsu developed an optimized parallel file system based on Lustre, called Fujitsu
Exabyte File System, scalable to several hundred petabytes.
MEMORY:
Supercomputer K has a storage capacity of 1410048 GB.
OPERATING SYSTEM:
It has a Linux based operating system.
PEOPLE INVOLVED IN MAKING THE SUPERCOMPUTER:
Over 1,000 people have been involved in the development of the Supercomputer "K computer"
through a partnership between RIKEN and Fujitsu.
STRUCTURE OF SUPER COMPUTER K:

THE OBJECTIVE OF SUPER COMPUTER K:
The supercomputer K will be actively employed to develop new medical treatments and drugs,
address environmental and disaster prevention problems, develop much safer aircrafts and
automobiles, develop new materials and energy sources, discover new unknown matter in space
and resolve the mysterious of the universe.
