O
ur world will never be the same again after Covid-
19. There are many challenges in society like
working from home, temporary unemployment,
lack of physical contacts of family and friends, and the
physical and mental health boundaries redrawn by the
WHO board in Jan 2021 to safeguard humanity. Amid all
these difficult situations, the mental health care sector needs
to be given high priority to help integrate the personal life,
family life, and social life in society by carrying out
different phases of health care programmes.
There are two types of entrepreneurs in the healthcare
industry, one who comes to improve the existing business
and whose focus is mainly on the growth of the business.
The 2nd type is an entrepreneur who is born out of pain in
life and focuses more on the customer first and the business
next. The success of mental healthcare requires the 2nd type
of entrepreneurs. To successfully achieve the above
services, caring and nurturing are the fundamental
capabilities required for providing mental healthcare.
One such entrepreneur who is catering to the individual
needs of the mental healthcare patients empathetically is
Dr P T Sunderam, who is leading his company PTS
passionately as its Managing Director and the Chief
Mentor. He is one of the prominent relationships
psychologists, Mind Programmer and the first married
couple’s relationship expert mentor in India. He has been
practising in this field as a mentor for the last twenty years.
In an area where no one was exclusively catering to the
needs of the marriage counseling sector in India, Dr
Sunderam dedicated himself in helping couples to
strengthen their marital life and enhance their relationship
with each other on a core level.
Dr Sunderam has developed a unique system and stabilized
the process. He first listens to his couple individually and
then analyses his findings based on their first meeting. After
analysis, he asks the couple to mail him separately what
they expect from the mentoring session, which helps him
identify the intensity of commitment of the couple for doing
homework at every session to get the desired results. This
process has not only helped him to weed out the half-
hearted couples but also helped countless couples who were
serious about improving their relationship results.
Dr Sunderam leverages his expertise in advanced subjects
on mind programming from the psychology schools of
Australia, Canada, and the USA. He has been felicitated in
13 psychiatric conferences and he has also taught various
doctors and psychologists in India as well. Through
consistent struggles and striving, Dr Sunderam has paved
his way towards success by integrating Quantum
Psychology, Silva Mind, and Neuro-Linguistic
Programming with Mars-Venus relationship psychology for
resolving the young married couples relationship issues of
the society.
Since childhood, he faced a lot of challenges that made him
the man he is today. He and his mother came back from the
verge of attempting suicide when he was nine years old.
Going through a lot of family issues, his mother, who was
fed up with her in-laws and could no longer take the mental
pressure left with Sunderam to end their lives.
As a child, it was difficult for Sunderam to understand the
ups and downs of life. But a holy saint saved Sunderam’s
life by enlightening him about life. He asked the young
Sunderam to introspect a few questions. “Will anything
change once you die? Will your mother’s problems go
away? If not, then live! You are born on this earth to help
countless other mothers who do not have a son like you.”
This statement changed the young Sunderam’s outlook on
life, and he made a promise of helping the suffering
mothers and their child in the best way he can.
Sunderam became India’s first married couples’ relationship
expert and mentor applying the mind reprogramming skills
as an alternative to counseling session and saved many
young mothers from the trap of negative thoughts that once
consumed him and his mother’s life.
Dynamics of PTS
Given below is an excerpt from an Interview by Insights
Success with Dr Sunderam, which reveals the stories and
struggles that he faced in his long and hard road to success.
We have understood your professional bio – can you
describe your move towards a married couple’s
mentoring?
The foundation of a healthy married society starts with
newly married couples. Unfortunately, these newly married
couples are walking out of these bonds for all the immature
wrong reasons. The foundation of society is cracking. So I
decided to rebuild the foundation of the relationship society.
I am in the field of helping newly married couples, for the
last 2 decades from all across the world through online and
offline coaching, mind programming and mentoring. I have
also helped them in parenting skills to excel as an
individual within their family. I want them to leave a
legendary life for their next generation.
What is relationship according to you?
A relationship is an emotional deposit that you make in
another person’s heart with certain rituals. It can also be
called unconditional love. This is like first depositing
money in the bank and then withdrawing it. We deposit
emotional rituals like “good morning”, “thank you”,
“sorry”, etc. in the heart of the other person before we
expect them from others.
What is the difference between Counseling, Coaching,
and Mentoring?
Counseling is advising to introspect oneself. Coaching is
helping the other person to set new goals. Mentoring is
doing counseling and coaching with accountability. A coach
is a person who works on your “doing
skills” with techniques like a swimming coach. I will say 1
Counselling = 100 Coaching, 100 Counselling =1 Mind
Programming, and 100 Mind Programming = 1 Mentoring.
A mentor is like a mother. He teaches from research and
experience. I am a relationship mentor with high
accountability for producing measurable results.
How do you explain the success rate of your marriage
mentoring session?
For me, the success rate with my young couples is 200%
because both – the husband and the wife – are doing
homework for every session separately. We call it, a Zoom
Mentoring Club practice. In our mentoring club, we focus
on a 3-step SAM process: “Subconscious Mind
Programming”, “Accountability” and “Morning Discipline
Practices” every day for our young couples. We take young
couples for a 30-days package, 1-month package, or 3
months package.
Your mission is to reach 1 million young couples on this
planet? Why this crazy mission at this age?
I am just 32 years young in this field and I am telling the
same story for the past 32 years. This is a GMS, (God Made
Syllabus), a legendary message to the next generation.
I attempted suicide many times with my mother when up to
9 years old. My mother had poor self-esteem and as a
result, was not daring to talk any word against my army
father. A temple Pujari saved both of us and in return, I
promised him to save millions of mothers trapped in such
innocence. It took 25 years for me to understand myself
fully. I do not want any other person to suffer like me or
like my mother.
You were an Engineer heading the HRD of a
corporate division. What made you change
the focus towards relationship married
Couples mentoring?
As a suicide survivor, I made a promise to
my mother, “You have cried for all the
mothers in this world, I will make sure
that no other mother cries like you.” I
never realized around that time that I
would enter this counselling field.
I was heading BHEL (HRD).
Annually, we used to recruit
Engineers and MBA pass outs from
the top universities of India. We used
to train them for a complete one year before absorbing them
into full-time jobs. As in charge, I maintained a good
rapport with them during this training period. Some trainees
got married after completion of their training period.
A married couple (both of them my ex-trainees) came for
consultation on relationship issues to me. The wife
complained that her husband was having an extramarital
affair at the site. When I asked him, the husband behaved
strangely and said there was nothing wrong with
extramarital affairs and if his wife wishes , she can also do
it. He even told me that he can help his wife to get another
partner for enjoyment. This made his wife lose her temper
and she threw her baby on my desk! She pulled her husband
by his hair and slammed his head against the door. She then
left my room crying.
This thought haunted me for three days as I felt morally
responsible for this incident. Later on, when I enquired
about the whereabouts of his wife, the husband denied
knowing her location. Then I convinced him for an NLP
mentoring session and gave him a few tips and that helped
him realize his mistakes. He then ran to his wife and found
her contemplating to suicide in a water tank. The very next
week, his wife came to thank me and told me that if her
husband had come half an hour late, he would have found
her dead body.
All of these misunderstandings happen because couples are
not educated to understand the basic personalities of each
other and find themselves stuck up in their marital life This
incident shook me to the core and I decided to share the
NLP and Mars-Venus skills with all the couples who are
trapped in such innocence of wrong relationship on this
planet.
What is your suggestion for youngsters who want to
become like you?
If one works on conventional education, he will be on the
road like his class mates. Teachers will teach you the
knowledge skills, coaches will teach you the doing skills.
But a mentor will mother you with accountability and
produce 100% results in every session. A mentor teaches
you from his experience. So, youngsters should choose and
learn from a successful mentor if they want to come up in
life faster than others. India needs more mentors, not
teachers. I have 4 mentors guiding me in my work. Ron
malthora of Australia, Avi Arya for Canada, Dev Gadhvi
paasionpruener Siddrath rajshekar frredom hub of India
As you are the NLP Pioneer in India, how did you
integrate NLP into marriage counselling expertise?
Soon after completing my PG in counselling, I started my
practice. Many of my clients reluctantly used to pay Rs. 10
even after hours of counselling. I approached many doctors
for joint venture work but they refused, telling that I was
not producing measurable results.
I searched for skills that give measurable results, but to my
dismay, found that most application-based skills were not
available in the academic world in India or abroad. But I
came across a few role models who were producing
fantastic measurable results. I realised that universities
teach only knowledge skills, but practical skills can only be
learnt from successful mentors.
I came across NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), a
mind programming science from Dr Richard Bandler,
founder of NLP and Dr John Grey of Mars-Venus
psychology fame. I invested an exorbitant amount in 1997
and learnt these valuable, measurable and result-oriented
skills. I became the first NLP state group practitioners’
st
president. I authored 1 NLP book of India 2003
I used to call the weekly practice group meeting for 1 year
regularly. Initially, the meeting was held in my house but as
the group grew larger, we shifted our venue to Indira Park –
a big public garden in Hyderabad city. The group members
applied the NLP techniques to each other for strengthening
our practice, skills, and insights.
I had a curiosity to know how the NLP (Neuro-Linguistic
Programming) psychology would work in the Indian
society, the Indian culture, and the Indian soil. I had an
intention to do research in applying NLP psychology on a
sample population and verify the research statistically. With
this intention, I worked with the prisoners of the Central
Jail Hyderabad applying NLP on them and found
extraordinary results beyond my expectations. I submitted
the same prisoners work as a thesis and I received the first
PhD (NLP) in India. Armed with the practitioner group
exercise and also with the real-life experience of working
with the prisoners, I became more confident and took more
and more challenging cases to get successful results
applying only mind programmimg techniques without the
use of medicine and counselling.
I was a voracious reader of self-improvement books from
my childhood. I served as a voluntary national trainer with
INDIA’S MOST RECOMMENDED

the Indian Jaycees movement and my passion for
psychology became very prominent after seeing the work of
my counselling mentor Prof. S S Padmakar of Vellore
Medical College, who was the first to serve as the faculty to
group counselling training to various corporate sectors in
India. I was very much influenced by his dedicated work in
this field.
I completed my PG on counselling and psychotherapy in
the year 2013. Soon after, I started counselling students for
5 years, but that was not economically viable. I was also
involved in treating the employees in the software industry.
I undertook a corporate assignment along with Dr
Padmakar, which helped me understand the unmet
emotional needs of newly married couples entering the
corporate ladder and suffering as a result of their inability to
balance their personal, professional, and family success.
I completed my ACC (Associate Certified Coach) certificate
under ICF (International Coach Federation), USA. I went
into executive life coaching with corporate sectors but was
left feeling unhappy with the coaching movement in India.
As the organization did not support executive coaching in
India unlike in the west, most of the assignments were half-
hearted attempts between the business leaders,
subordinates, and the HR team.
In most cases, executing coaching was seen as an instant
performance improvement tool, rather than a holistic
practical development movement. The employers were
more interested in the how-to part of coaching without
working on the why side of it. I was also a silent witness to
the games played by the leaders and HR team in the
executive coaching model.
Accountability was badly missing in the process. With my
experience, I observed that every executive coaching
session had an un-answered psychological issue for
development. I once again returned to counselling and
started training corporate employees. A few of my
successful training programs are:
• Couples’ Counselling
• Proactive Parenting
• Post-retirement Challenges
• 7 Habits of Happy Family
• Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus
• NLP Psychology for Relationship Improvement
As the pressure on working employees became relevant
particularly in the software sectors and as the divorce rate
among the educated young couples gradually increased, I
started once again focusing full-time on problems of young
married couples from the software industries. Another
pattern emerged among married couples that indicated that
the newly married couples were getting separated in the
first five years of marriage, breaking the foundation of the
society.
Most of my clients were working couples from the software
industry. They had a shortage of time and they wanted
quick results. So I integrated NLP treatment with marriage
counselling, which produced 10 times faster results than
any other school of psychology.
I envisaged the social media impact 2 decades ago and built
my online presence with 700 YouTube videos in 4 Indian
languages (English/Hindi/Telugu/Tamil), serving the youth
of the entire globe (most of my clients are NRIs from
Silicon Valley, Singapore, Australia, and the UAE).
What is your message for the next generation?
In the Google era, one’s learning skills are getting outdated
every 1 years.
Elders and Parents and In laws model of counseling is
outdated and not suitable for Millennial Generation They
are but not based on latest research nor proven results.
For a 30 years professional life one has invested 3 years
of education For 80 years of married life how much
education one has invested to become a good spouse, good
parent , updated skills to balance personal and professional
life If you do not update yourself, your children will
outdate you very fast!
My message to the next generation is–rewire your mind, re-
edit your heart, and re-write your own life story. You are
one skill away to success, find it and master it.

The global pandemic, Covid-19 has brought
along with it various problems for everyone
around us. People are not only falling ill
physically but are also suffering from various mental
problems during such challenging times. Amid a
crisis like this, it has become very difficult to
maintain a lifestyle which supports our mental
health.
Different problems and uncertainties, worries
related to finances, family, elderly parents, childcare,
job security, and so on, have had a bad impact on
our lifestyles and mental health.
Various factors such as the indefiniteness about the
future, endless news coverage about the pandemic
and its serious effects across the globe, and the flood
of information in social media and the internet can
increase our anxiety.
During these tough times, stress is a normal
response mechanism. It disturbs our sleeping
patterns and eating habits, affects our emotions,
reduces our motivation levels, and also forces many
to indulge into alcohol and drug abuse.
However, it is important for every individual to
overcome stress, anxiety, and other mental disorders,
so that they can live comfortably and battle this

WELL BEING

global pandemic with positivity and determination. They
should not hesitate to seek help from any specialist if they
experience any sort of mental disorder during such times.
Strategies to Ensure Mental Well-Being during the
Pandemic
Maintaining a positive mindset and embracing positivity is
of utmost most importance for everyone now. It can provide
us with the much-needed strength to combat the lethal
pandemic. The methods mentioned below can play an
important part in ensuring that we take proper care of our
mental health during this covid-19 crisis:
Practicing Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a practice which helps us to become aware
of what is going on in our mind and around us without
reacting to anything. It helps us to live each moment fully
and richly. In order to practice mindfulness, it is essential
that we completely focus on the ‘now’ and ‘present’. We
should emphasize on each passing thought or feeling
without judgment. Research has proven that regular practice
of mindfulness can help to significantly increase our
capacity to cope with traumatic events. It helps the master
our control over emotional states, while reducing anxiety,
stress, and other symptoms.
Breathing Exercises are Helpful
In any stressful situation, taking a deep breath eases a lot of
stress. While practicing ‘mindful breathing’, people should
be conscious of each passing breath and should simply
observe the physical sensation which is involved in the
process of breathing. By conducting research on ‘mindful
breathing’ and ‘pranayam’, people can regulate emotions
and manage stress.
Meditation is the Key to Wellness
Meditation does not take a lot of time and is simple and
free. Through meditating, people can relax, decrease
negative emotions, build skills to manage stress, and
increase tolerance. Mindful meditation is all about being
aware of one’s body, breath, and thoughts, and letting go of
negative thoughts and emotions without any judgments.
Consulting Trustworthy Sources for News
For any individual, collecting accurate information
regarding covid-19 is very important. However, they should
opt for genuine sources such as Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO),
and the official websites of respective Ministries of Health
to gather accurate and timely public health information
regarding the pandemic. On the other hand, too much
exposure to media coverage of the virus can also be harmful
for our mental peace and well-being. Instead of constantly
collecting news regarding the pandemic, people should
engage in other activities such as reading, writing poetry,
listening to music, talking to their friends and family, and so
on.
Using Social Media Responsibly
We all engage in social media and share various
information on a regular basis. However, we should always
keep this in mind that false and misleading information may
have serious consequences on ourselves, or friends, family,
society, and the nation at large. Hence, before posting any
information on social media, we should think twice, carry
out thorough research, and should make sure that the
information does not hurt the sentiments of any individual
or community. We should always ask ourselves- is the
information that we are about to share truthful, helpful,
inspiring, and necessary?
Generosity is the Need of the Hour
During these tough times, people will be tempted to think
only about themselves and their family. They may worry
about shortages and hoard various essential commodities
such as food and medicines. This may eventually lead to the
shortage of necessary products in the market, and other
needy people may remain devoid of these essentials. While
it is important to keep proper stock of essential items,
people should also consider that others may also require
these items. Hence, it is imperative to be generous and to
develop a sense of community so that everyone can equally
access these resources.
Ensuring proper mental health is of prime concern during
this severe pandemic scenario. A healthy mind will
complement the body and soul and will assist people in
taking decisions which will be beneficial not only for
themselves, but for their family, society, and the nation as
well. It is important for people to open-up with their
therapists and healthcare professionals about any mental
problems they are going through. Sharing their problems
will help them in getting expert help at the earliest before
the situation worsens.

AMRI HOSPITAL
An Eminent Healthcare Provider Ingrained with Excellence and Trust
Today, psychotherapy has been identified as a
procedure that not only treats behavioural patterns
but also eases patients who are suffering from
cancer and neurological problems. It is now gradually
growing as a distinct sphere in treating patients with a
variety of verbal and psychological techniques. Combined
with medications, this strategy is utilized by professionals
to constitute a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise,
required nutrients, and adequate sleep.
It has been found that with psychotherapy, over 75 percent
of people have improved their lifestyle and recovered
perfectly from their disability, medical, and other behav-
ioural conditions. Several healthcare professionals have
linked this approach with their treatment methods to
favourably change the working pattern of their patient’s
brain and body.
Collaborating with different healthcare experts to design
components with functional outcomes, these therapists
perform multiple treatment settings to treat patients during
every stage of their diagnosis.

surgeons, trained at the best medical schools from across
the world, who continue to upgrade their skills and
technical knowledge in a bid to strive for the stated goal of
quality and affordable treatment.
What are the challenges that hospitals across the
country are facing?
One of the primary challenges hospitals across the country
are facing is the high cost of advanced technology. In order
to ensure better treatment protocols and medical outcomes,
it is mandatory to invest in the latest technology. However,
the high cost of such technologies and equipment often
makes it hard to afford for general patients. Hospitals and
healthcare support advocacy bodies have often pointed out
that lessening the burden of duties and taxes on such
products would make it easier for hospitals to provide better
services to patients.
Please share the latest technology that the hospital is
utilizing to offer better services to patients.
AMRI Hospitals has always made it a point to invest in the
latest technologies. One such technology is O-ARM, which
makes conducting spinal surgeries more precise and offers
much better medical outcomes. AMRI has also been
investing in the latest technologies like endoscopic surgery,
laser surgery, and even robotic surgery.
How does the hospital intend to handle its Societal
Responsibility? Please mention any special charity or
program as such.
AMRI Hospitals takes special efforts to fulfil its social
responsibility by conducting free health check-up camps
across Eastern India for various age and income groups.
Recently, on World AIDS Day, the group conducted a free
HIV test camp for sex workers at a red-light district in
Kolkata. The Group hospitals have also been investing
heavily in spreading awareness on various diseases like
cardiac problems, diabetes, kidney ailments, etc.
How is the hospital utilizing technology for hospital
management?
The hospital group has put in place several measures that
will help it sail into the coming decades, where healthcare
will be more focused on technology. While the Group has
already set a deadline of 2022 to turn the whole process of
patient registration, discharge, and prescriptions paperless,
internally, too, constant changes are being made to make
the systems and processes smoother and free of human
errors.
Share with us the hospital’s views and measures taken
regarding personalized healthcare.
AMRI Hospitals, through its various tie-ups with external
agencies, are working on making home healthcare service
an important feature, offering personalized care and
services to patients, particularly the elderly. The Group
already has launched a service targeted at NRIs, who have
parents living in India, so that they can have peace of mind
even from afar, confidently knowing that their parents will
be taken care of both in cases of emergencies and for
routine check-ups.
Brief us about the hospital’s future perspectives.
AMRI Hospitals has not only been going strong, but it also
continues to remain among the top private healthcare
service providers in Eastern India. The Group, which
currently has 1,000 beds across its four units in Kolkata and
Bhubaneshwar, plans to add 800 more beds, at its
Mukundapur unit in Kolkata, besides being in the process
of setting up a specialized cancer hospital at Bhubaneswar,
and a large project at Rajarhat New Town. The Group,
which is making its presence felt across the North East, and
even in neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, and
Myanmar, foresees a future that is not just worth looking
forward to, but exciting as well.

out for the things you say. You will
have to wander all over weird
territories to explain your problem,
because you don’t even know what
it is.”
This process demands the therapist to
listen a lot, and to figure out ‘What’s
wrong here?’And the person will tell
the therapist a hundred things that
might be wrong. And quite often, it’s
quite painful to have to listen. Painful,
not in the sense that it is not engaging
or that it is not worthwhile. Painful, in
the sense that people’s life has lot of
pain in them. There are whole arenas
of philosophy dedicated to aspects of
human suffering. It’s painful to partake
in another person’s suffering.
The person talks about their past and
their present, and the therapist
analyses. Let’s say the person tells the
therapist his/her 100 problems. The
first thing that happens in this process
is is that 90 of them aren’t really
problems, and the person just figures
that out as they talk them through. The
person contemplates: “So, maybe this
problem is linked to this problem;
maybe this problem is not really one;

And you also don’t know what is right
for them. Then you start talking to the
person to try to solve their problem.
The problem is a given, not that it is
known, as the person has visited the
therapist because something isn’t right
in their life.
Then the person has to talk and talk,
whereas the therapist has to ask them
questions to find out their problem.
Maybe they’re depressed, maybe
they’re anxious, maybe they came
from a terrible family, or maybe
they’re really hard on themselves and
things are actually going better than
they think.
Detachment and openminded-ness are
the most effective tools of a therapist.
Then the therapist says, “Look, you
can tell me anything. And try to tell the
truth because otherwise we’re just not
going to get anywhere, because we’re
trying to deal with reality after all. So,
tell me the truth, I’m not going to be
judgemental in any stupid sense. I am
going to be judging you as much as
possible, because I want to help you do
things right. So, I’m going to judge
you, but I’m not going to throw you
- A Common Man’s Perspective
In the basest sense, a
psychotherapy session is a
conversation between a person and
a therapist.
What do you do as a therapist? You act
as a strategic counsellor. So, let’s
imagine someone visits a therapist. In
that case, there are two big mysteries:
what’s wrong; and what would a cure
look like? So as a therapist, the first
thing one needs to figure out is that you
don’t know what is wrong with this
person and probably, neither do they.
The principle aim
of psychotherapy is
not to transport one
to an impossible state
of happiness,
but to help acquire
steadfastness and
pa ence in the face
of suffering.
-Carl Jung

T

that’s not as bad as I thought it was, we
can probably ignore that problem.”
This type of communication is akin to
the person having a handful of cards
and they are not really organised. But
the person doesn’t know what to do
with them; there’s too many cards. The
therapist then encourages the person,
insinuating “lay your cards on the
table, all of them.”
Then the person lays out their problem,
and the therapist has to listen carefully
without being too quick to jump to a
solution. The person lays their
problems for the therapist as they both
figure out that some of things are not
worth paying attention to or are not
really problems. This, in essence, is
cutting the chaos down to size. They
look carefully at the chaos and it starts
to shrink. Then the person indicates to
the chaos that “I’m bigger than I
thought I was and I’m bigger than the
chaos decided I was.”
After brainstorming enough, the person
realises that actually they only have 10
problems. The next task is to figure out
how to break those problems down into
manageable sub-problems and do they
go about addressing them. This can be
very complicated.
Solving these 10 remaining real
problems is the crux of the matter – the
hardest part. Here is where the
psychotherapist reintroduces his vast
knowledge and years of practice to try
and find effective ways to resolve the
person’s issues. To strategize solutions
and hence figure out what a cure would
look like for the person. Cure in the
sense of what does the person imagine
a possible version of themself where
they no longer have this issue. The
cure may be a future version of the
person where they are not bound by
their problem but free of it.
The core problems may still vary and
extremely difficult to resolve, although
the therapist needs to focus on how to
make the life of the person better, or at
least more manageable, while coming
up with solutions and strategies. But in
the end, it also depends on the person
to take initiative to try and get their life
sorted out. For there is changing those
who do not want to be changed.
This, in essence, is a very brief account
of what an ideal psychotherapy session
should be like, from a common man’s
perspective.
-Aditya Umale
Hospitals come under service-oriented industry with
lot of dependency on manpower. Attrition is one of
the key challenges faced in the industry. With
inflation and rising costs, it is difficult to ensure financial
viability. Patient safety is the crux of patient care. Reducing
the risk of infection, as well as other potential risks is
crucial in ensuring a high quality of care and maintaining
the organization’s reputation. Noncompliance with
regulatory standards can lead to a disruption in operations,
poor quality of care, safety issues, and substantial fines.
Addressing these issues head on and providing dynamic
healthcare services is one such institution, Bangalore
Baptist Hospital (BBH). In the given below Interview with
Insights Success, let us figure out how it is contributing to
the ever-increasing needs of the Indian healthcare system:
Kindly brief us about the hospital and its initial journey.
Bangalore Baptist Hospital (BBH) is a not-for-profit
institution with a strong vision to serve all people without
discrimination of caste, colour, or creed in the spirit of Jesus
Christ. BBH started as an 80-bed hospital in the year 1973
and is currently a 340-bed multispecialty hospital serving
all socio-economic strata of the society and is one of the
institutions leading the way in healthcare quality in the

  • 12. O ur world will never be the same again after Covid- 19. There are many challenges in society like working from home, temporary unemployment, lack of physical contacts of family and friends, and the physical and mental health boundaries redrawn by the WHO board in Jan 2021 to safeguard humanity. Amid all these difficult situations, the mental health care sector needs to be given high priority to help integrate the personal life, family life, and social life in society by carrying out different phases of health care programmes. There are two types of entrepreneurs in the healthcare industry, one who comes to improve the existing business and whose focus is mainly on the growth of the business. The 2nd type is an entrepreneur who is born out of pain in life and focuses more on the customer first and the business next. The success of mental healthcare requires the 2nd type of entrepreneurs. To successfully achieve the above services, caring and nurturing are the fundamental capabilities required for providing mental healthcare. One such entrepreneur who is catering to the individual needs of the mental healthcare patients empathetically is Dr P T Sunderam, who is leading his company PTS passionately as its Managing Director and the Chief Mentor. He is one of the prominent relationships psychologists, Mind Programmer and the first married couple’s relationship expert mentor in India. He has been practising in this field as a mentor for the last twenty years. In an area where no one was exclusively catering to the needs of the marriage counseling sector in India, Dr Sunderam dedicated himself in helping couples to strengthen their marital life and enhance their relationship with each other on a core level. Dr Sunderam has developed a unique system and stabilized the process. He first listens to his couple individually and then analyses his findings based on their first meeting. After analysis, he asks the couple to mail him separately what they expect from the mentoring session, which helps him identify the intensity of commitment of the couple for doing homework at every session to get the desired results. This process has not only helped him to weed out the half- hearted couples but also helped countless couples who were serious about improving their relationship results. Dr Sunderam leverages his expertise in advanced subjects on mind programming from the psychology schools of Australia, Canada, and the USA. He has been felicitated in 13 psychiatric conferences and he has also taught various doctors and psychologists in India as well. Through consistent struggles and striving, Dr Sunderam has paved his way towards success by integrating Quantum Psychology, Silva Mind, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming with Mars-Venus relationship psychology for resolving the young married couples relationship issues of the society. Since childhood, he faced a lot of challenges that made him the man he is today. He and his mother came back from the verge of attempting suicide when he was nine years old. Going through a lot of family issues, his mother, who was fed up with her in-laws and could no longer take the mental pressure left with Sunderam to end their lives. As a child, it was difficult for Sunderam to understand the ups and downs of life. But a holy saint saved Sunderam’s life by enlightening him about life. He asked the young Sunderam to introspect a few questions. “Will anything change once you die? Will your mother’s problems go away? If not, then live! You are born on this earth to help countless other mothers who do not have a son like you.” This statement changed the young Sunderam’s outlook on life, and he made a promise of helping the suffering mothers and their child in the best way he can. Sunderam became India’s first married couples’ relationship expert and mentor applying the mind reprogramming skills as an alternative to counseling session and saved many young mothers from the trap of negative thoughts that once consumed him and his mother’s life. Dynamics of PTS Given below is an excerpt from an Interview by Insights Success with Dr Sunderam, which reveals the stories and struggles that he faced in his long and hard road to success. We have understood your professional bio – can you describe your move towards a married couple’s mentoring? The foundation of a healthy married society starts with newly married couples. Unfortunately, these newly married couples are walking out of these bonds for all the immature wrong reasons. The foundation of society is cracking. So I decided to rebuild the foundation of the relationship society. I am in the field of helping newly married couples, for the last 2 decades from all across the world through online and offline coaching, mind programming and mentoring. I have also helped them in parenting skills to excel as an

  • 14. individual within their family. I want them to leave a legendary life for their next generation. What is relationship according to you? A relationship is an emotional deposit that you make in another person’s heart with certain rituals. It can also be called unconditional love. This is like first depositing money in the bank and then withdrawing it. We deposit emotional rituals like “good morning”, “thank you”, “sorry”, etc. in the heart of the other person before we expect them from others. What is the difference between Counseling, Coaching, and Mentoring? Counseling is advising to introspect oneself. Coaching is helping the other person to set new goals. Mentoring is doing counseling and coaching with accountability. A coach is a person who works on your “doing skills” with techniques like a swimming coach. I will say 1 Counselling = 100 Coaching, 100 Counselling =1 Mind Programming, and 100 Mind Programming = 1 Mentoring. A mentor is like a mother. He teaches from research and experience. I am a relationship mentor with high accountability for producing measurable results. How do you explain the success rate of your marriage mentoring session? For me, the success rate with my young couples is 200% because both – the husband and the wife – are doing homework for every session separately. We call it, a Zoom Mentoring Club practice. In our mentoring club, we focus on a 3-step SAM process: “Subconscious Mind Programming”, “Accountability” and “Morning Discipline Practices” every day for our young couples. We take young couples for a 30-days package, 1-month package, or 3 months package. Your mission is to reach 1 million young couples on this planet? Why this crazy mission at this age? I am just 32 years young in this field and I am telling the same story for the past 32 years. This is a GMS, (God Made Syllabus), a legendary message to the next generation. I attempted suicide many times with my mother when up to 9 years old. My mother had poor self-esteem and as a result, was not daring to talk any word against my army father. A temple Pujari saved both of us and in return, I promised him to save millions of mothers trapped in such innocence. It took 25 years for me to understand myself fully. I do not want any other person to suffer like me or like my mother. You were an Engineer heading the HRD of a corporate division. What made you change the focus towards relationship married Couples mentoring? As a suicide survivor, I made a promise to my mother, “You have cried for all the mothers in this world, I will make sure that no other mother cries like you.” I never realized around that time that I would enter this counselling field. I was heading BHEL (HRD). Annually, we used to recruit Engineers and MBA pass outs from the top universities of India. We used
  • 15. to train them for a complete one year before absorbing them into full-time jobs. As in charge, I maintained a good rapport with them during this training period. Some trainees got married after completion of their training period. A married couple (both of them my ex-trainees) came for consultation on relationship issues to me. The wife complained that her husband was having an extramarital affair at the site. When I asked him, the husband behaved strangely and said there was nothing wrong with extramarital affairs and if his wife wishes , she can also do it. He even told me that he can help his wife to get another partner for enjoyment. This made his wife lose her temper and she threw her baby on my desk! She pulled her husband by his hair and slammed his head against the door. She then left my room crying. This thought haunted me for three days as I felt morally responsible for this incident. Later on, when I enquired about the whereabouts of his wife, the husband denied knowing her location. Then I convinced him for an NLP mentoring session and gave him a few tips and that helped him realize his mistakes. He then ran to his wife and found her contemplating to suicide in a water tank. The very next week, his wife came to thank me and told me that if her husband had come half an hour late, he would have found her dead body. All of these misunderstandings happen because couples are not educated to understand the basic personalities of each other and find themselves stuck up in their marital life This incident shook me to the core and I decided to share the NLP and Mars-Venus skills with all the couples who are trapped in such innocence of wrong relationship on this planet. What is your suggestion for youngsters who want to become like you? If one works on conventional education, he will be on the road like his class mates. Teachers will teach you the knowledge skills, coaches will teach you the doing skills. But a mentor will mother you with accountability and produce 100% results in every session. A mentor teaches you from his experience. So, youngsters should choose and learn from a successful mentor if they want to come up in life faster than others. India needs more mentors, not teachers. I have 4 mentors guiding me in my work. Ron malthora of Australia, Avi Arya for Canada, Dev Gadhvi paasionpruener Siddrath rajshekar frredom hub of India As you are the NLP Pioneer in India, how did you integrate NLP into marriage counselling expertise? Soon after completing my PG in counselling, I started my practice. Many of my clients reluctantly used to pay Rs. 10 even after hours of counselling. I approached many doctors for joint venture work but they refused, telling that I was not producing measurable results. I searched for skills that give measurable results, but to my dismay, found that most application-based skills were not available in the academic world in India or abroad. But I came across a few role models who were producing fantastic measurable results. I realised that universities teach only knowledge skills, but practical skills can only be learnt from successful mentors. I came across NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), a mind programming science from Dr Richard Bandler, founder of NLP and Dr John Grey of Mars-Venus psychology fame. I invested an exorbitant amount in 1997 and learnt these valuable, measurable and result-oriented skills. I became the first NLP state group practitioners’ st president. I authored 1 NLP book of India 2003 I used to call the weekly practice group meeting for 1 year regularly. Initially, the meeting was held in my house but as the group grew larger, we shifted our venue to Indira Park – a big public garden in Hyderabad city. The group members applied the NLP techniques to each other for strengthening our practice, skills, and insights. I had a curiosity to know how the NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) psychology would work in the Indian society, the Indian culture, and the Indian soil. I had an intention to do research in applying NLP psychology on a sample population and verify the research statistically. With this intention, I worked with the prisoners of the Central Jail Hyderabad applying NLP on them and found extraordinary results beyond my expectations. I submitted the same prisoners work as a thesis and I received the first PhD (NLP) in India. Armed with the practitioner group exercise and also with the real-life experience of working with the prisoners, I became more confident and took more and more challenging cases to get successful results applying only mind programmimg techniques without the use of medicine and counselling. I was a voracious reader of self-improvement books from my childhood. I served as a voluntary national trainer with INDIA’S MOST RECOMMENDED Psych therapy TREATMENT PROVIDERS 2021
  • 16. the Indian Jaycees movement and my passion for psychology became very prominent after seeing the work of my counselling mentor Prof. S S Padmakar of Vellore Medical College, who was the first to serve as the faculty to group counselling training to various corporate sectors in India. I was very much influenced by his dedicated work in this field. I completed my PG on counselling and psychotherapy in the year 2013. Soon after, I started counselling students for 5 years, but that was not economically viable. I was also involved in treating the employees in the software industry. I undertook a corporate assignment along with Dr Padmakar, which helped me understand the unmet emotional needs of newly married couples entering the corporate ladder and suffering as a result of their inability to balance their personal, professional, and family success. I completed my ACC (Associate Certified Coach) certificate under ICF (International Coach Federation), USA. I went into executive life coaching with corporate sectors but was left feeling unhappy with the coaching movement in India. As the organization did not support executive coaching in India unlike in the west, most of the assignments were half- hearted attempts between the business leaders, subordinates, and the HR team. In most cases, executing coaching was seen as an instant performance improvement tool, rather than a holistic practical development movement. The employers were more interested in the how-to part of coaching without working on the why side of it. I was also a silent witness to the games played by the leaders and HR team in the executive coaching model. Accountability was badly missing in the process. With my experience, I observed that every executive coaching session had an un-answered psychological issue for development. I once again returned to counselling and started training corporate employees. A few of my successful training programs are: • Couples’ Counselling • Proactive Parenting • Post-retirement Challenges • 7 Habits of Happy Family • Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus • NLP Psychology for Relationship Improvement As the pressure on working employees became relevant particularly in the software sectors and as the divorce rate among the educated young couples gradually increased, I started once again focusing full-time on problems of young married couples from the software industries. Another pattern emerged among married couples that indicated that the newly married couples were getting separated in the first five years of marriage, breaking the foundation of the society. Most of my clients were working couples from the software industry. They had a shortage of time and they wanted quick results. So I integrated NLP treatment with marriage counselling, which produced 10 times faster results than any other school of psychology. I envisaged the social media impact 2 decades ago and built my online presence with 700 YouTube videos in 4 Indian languages (English/Hindi/Telugu/Tamil), serving the youth of the entire globe (most of my clients are NRIs from Silicon Valley, Singapore, Australia, and the UAE). What is your message for the next generation? In the Google era, one’s learning skills are getting outdated every 1 years. Elders and Parents and In laws model of counseling is outdated and not suitable for Millennial Generation They are but not based on latest research nor proven results. For a 30 years professional life one has invested 3 years of education For 80 years of married life how much education one has invested to become a good spouse, good parent , updated skills to balance personal and professional life If you do not update yourself, your children will outdate you very fast! My message to the next generation is–rewire your mind, re- edit your heart, and re-write your own life story. You are one skill away to success, find it and master it.

People are not only falling ill physically but are also suffering from various mental problems during such challenging times. Amid a crisis like this, it has become very difficult to maintain a lifestyle which supports our mental health. Different problems and uncertainties, worries related to finances, family, elderly parents, childcare, job security, and so on, have had a bad impact on our lifestyles and mental health. Various factors such as the indefiniteness about the future, endless news coverage about the pandemic and its serious effects across the globe, and the flood of information in social media and the internet can increase our anxiety. During these tough times, stress is a normal response mechanism. It disturbs our sleeping patterns and eating habits, affects our emotions, reduces our motivation levels, and also forces many to indulge into alcohol and drug abuse. However, it is important for every individual to overcome stress, anxiety, and other mental disorders, so that they can live comfortably and battle this IMPORTANCE OF MENTAL WELL BEING DURNING COVID-19

  • 20. global pandemic with positivity and determination. They should not hesitate to seek help from any specialist if they experience any sort of mental disorder during such times. Strategies to Ensure Mental Well-Being during the Pandemic Maintaining a positive mindset and embracing positivity is of utmost most importance for everyone now. It can provide us with the much-needed strength to combat the lethal pandemic. The methods mentioned below can play an important part in ensuring that we take proper care of our mental health during this covid-19 crisis: Practicing Mindfulness Mindfulness is a practice which helps us to become aware of what is going on in our mind and around us without reacting to anything. It helps us to live each moment fully and richly. In order to practice mindfulness, it is essential that we completely focus on the ‘now’ and ‘present’. We should emphasize on each passing thought or feeling without judgment. Research has proven that regular practice of mindfulness can help to significantly increase our capacity to cope with traumatic events. It helps the master our control over emotional states, while reducing anxiety, stress, and other symptoms. Breathing Exercises are Helpful In any stressful situation, taking a deep breath eases a lot of stress. While practicing ‘mindful breathing’, people should be conscious of each passing breath and should simply observe the physical sensation which is involved in the process of breathing. By conducting research on ‘mindful breathing’ and ‘pranayam’, people can regulate emotions and manage stress. Meditation is the Key to Wellness Meditation does not take a lot of time and is simple and free. Through meditating, people can relax, decrease negative emotions, build skills to manage stress, and increase tolerance. Mindful meditation is all about being aware of one’s body, breath, and thoughts, and letting go of negative thoughts and emotions without any judgments. Consulting Trustworthy Sources for News For any individual, collecting accurate information regarding covid-19 is very important. However, they should opt for genuine sources such as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and the official websites of respective Ministries of Health to gather accurate and timely public health information regarding the pandemic. On the other hand, too much exposure to media coverage of the virus can also be harmful for our mental peace and well-being. Instead of constantly collecting news regarding the pandemic, people should engage in other activities such as reading, writing poetry, listening to music, talking to their friends and family, and so on. Using Social Media Responsibly We all engage in social media and share various information on a regular basis. However, we should always keep this in mind that false and misleading information may have serious consequences on ourselves, or friends, family, society, and the nation at large. Hence, before posting any information on social media, we should think twice, carry out thorough research, and should make sure that the information does not hurt the sentiments of any individual or community. We should always ask ourselves- is the information that we are about to share truthful, helpful, inspiring, and necessary? Generosity is the Need of the Hour During these tough times, people will be tempted to think only about themselves and their family. They may worry about shortages and hoard various essential commodities such as food and medicines. This may eventually lead to the shortage of necessary products in the market, and other needy people may remain devoid of these essentials. While it is important to keep proper stock of essential items, people should also consider that others may also require these items. Hence, it is imperative to be generous and to develop a sense of community so that everyone can equally access these resources. Ensuring proper mental health is of prime concern during this severe pandemic scenario. A healthy mind will complement the body and soul and will assist people in taking decisions which will be beneficial not only for themselves, but for their family, society, and the nation as well. It is important for people to open-up with their therapists and healthcare professionals about any mental problems they are going through. Sharing their problems will help them in getting expert help at the earliest before the situation worsens. - Ananda Kamal Das

  • 32. out for the things you say. You will have to wander all over weird territories to explain your problem, because you don’t even know what it is.” This process demands the therapist to listen a lot, and to figure out ‘What’s wrong here?’And the person will tell the therapist a hundred things that might be wrong. And quite often, it’s quite painful to have to listen. Painful, not in the sense that it is not engaging or that it is not worthwhile. Painful, in the sense that people’s life has lot of pain in them. There are whole arenas of philosophy dedicated to aspects of human suffering. It’s painful to partake in another person’s suffering. The person talks about their past and their present, and the therapist analyses. Let’s say the person tells the therapist his/her 100 problems. The first thing that happens in this process is is that 90 of them aren’t really problems, and the person just figures that out as they talk them through. The person contemplates: “So, maybe this problem is linked to this problem; maybe this problem is not really one; Ideal Psycho herapy reatment And you also don’t know what is right for them. Then you start talking to the person to try to solve their problem. The problem is a given, not that it is known, as the person has visited the therapist because something isn’t right in their life. Then the person has to talk and talk, whereas the therapist has to ask them questions to find out their problem. Maybe they’re depressed, maybe they’re anxious, maybe they came from a terrible family, or maybe they’re really hard on themselves and things are actually going better than they think. Detachment and openminded-ness are the most effective tools of a therapist. Then the therapist says, “Look, you can tell me anything. And try to tell the truth because otherwise we’re just not going to get anywhere, because we’re trying to deal with reality after all. So, tell me the truth, I’m not going to be judgemental in any stupid sense. I am going to be judging you as much as possible, because I want to help you do things right. So, I’m going to judge you, but I’m not going to throw you - A Common Man’s Perspective In the basest sense, a psychotherapy session is a conversation between a person and a therapist. What do you do as a therapist? You act as a strategic counsellor. So, let’s imagine someone visits a therapist. In that case, there are two big mysteries: what’s wrong; and what would a cure look like? So as a therapist, the first thing one needs to figure out is that you don’t know what is wrong with this person and probably, neither do they. The principle aim of psychotherapy is not to transport one to an impossible state of happiness, but to help acquire steadfastness and pa ence in the face of suffering. -Carl Jung “ “ T
  • 33. Psychotherapy Insights that’s not as bad as I thought it was, we can probably ignore that problem.” This type of communication is akin to the person having a handful of cards and they are not really organised. But the person doesn’t know what to do with them; there’s too many cards. The therapist then encourages the person, insinuating “lay your cards on the table, all of them.” Then the person lays out their problem, and the therapist has to listen carefully without being too quick to jump to a solution. The person lays their problems for the therapist as they both figure out that some of things are not worth paying attention to or are not really problems. This, in essence, is cutting the chaos down to size. They look carefully at the chaos and it starts to shrink. Then the person indicates to the chaos that “I’m bigger than I thought I was and I’m bigger than the chaos decided I was.” After brainstorming enough, the person realises that actually they only have 10 problems. The next task is to figure out how to break those problems down into manageable sub-problems and do they go about addressing them. This can be very complicated. Solving these 10 remaining real problems is the crux of the matter – the hardest part. Here is where the psychotherapist reintroduces his vast knowledge and years of practice to try and find effective ways to resolve the person’s issues. To strategize solutions and hence figure out what a cure would look like for the person. Cure in the sense of what does the person imagine a possible version of themself where they no longer have this issue. The cure may be a future version of the person where they are not bound by their problem but free of it. The core problems may still vary and extremely difficult to resolve, although the therapist needs to focus on how to make the life of the person better, or at least more manageable, while coming up with solutions and strategies. But in the end, it also depends on the person to take initiative to try and get their life sorted out. For there is changing those who do not want to be changed. This, in essence, is a very brief account of what an ideal psychotherapy session should be like, from a common man’s perspective. -Aditya Umale
