Working with personnel at The Rapid Transit Center, I learned all of the procedures of the public transportation system. I then drafted a power point presentation that leaned heavily on the use of images in order to increase the comprehension of the bus system among refugees with differing levels of English proficiency. Used in conjunction with maps and schedule books provided by the The Rapid personnel and a hands-on experience, the main aim of this curriculum is to teach refugees how to use all the bus lines available for future use.
8. Northbound vs. Southbound.
• If your destination is before
your location, use the
southbound bus.
• If your destination is after
your location, use the
northbound bus.
10. If you don't know where to get off..
• Ask the bus driver!
• Write down the address you need to go to, show it to the bus
driver, and he/she will help you get there.
25. If you have to stand…
Make sure to stand behind the yellow line!
26. Again, Observe!
• What are the names of the streets?
• Do you see any stores or restaurants?
• What does your stop look like?
• Tip: Make checkpoints to know what to look for so
you know you are close to your destination.
33. To buy tickets…
Look for the “Ticket” window in Central
Station. There you can buy bus tickets!
34. If you ever need help…
Central Station has security and police. You can always ask for help
35. What if…
• You need to use two buses to get to your
destination?
• Then you have to ask for a transfer!
