Do you measure employee engagement?
Do you monitor engagement from year-to-year?
• Most companies conduct an annual Employee Engagement Survey.
• Between surveys, actions are taken to improve engagement.
• Do those actions have an impact on engagement? Has engagement improved?

One option to monitor change is to create an
Employee Engagement Index
• This Index uses the Level of Engagement items on your Employee
Engagement Survey.
• You can calculate the Employee Engagement Index for each year.
• This is the percent of respondents who are “Engaged.”
• You can also calculate the Employee Engagement Change Index.
• This number indicates the change in percent Engaged from one year to
the next.

Level of Engagement items
• Level of Engagement items on the survey measure the degree of
engagement of each survey respondent.
• These items do not measure the drivers of engagement.
• Go to these links for more information on what is meant by Employee
Engagement and Level of Engagement items.

To calculate the Employee Engagement Index,
first, look at your survey options
• Typically, in a Likert scale, there are five possible responses to each item on the
survey.

Calculate three percentages
• Based on each person’s survey responses (keep names anonymous), classify each
respondent in one of these three categories:
• 1) Engaged,
• 2) Responsive to Engagement (or Passive), or
• 3) Disengaged.
• Once you’ve identified the number of respondents in each category, you can
tabulate the percent of survey respondents for each category.

To be classified as Engaged:
• Add together the percent of survey respondents who gave only Favorable
responses to all of the Level of Engagement items on the survey.
• These employees gave a “Strongly Agree” and/or “Agree” response to each
of the Level of Engagement items.
• The respondent gave no neutral or negative response to any of the Level of
Engagement items.

To be classified as Responsive to Engagement
(Passive):
• Calculate the percent of respondents who gave at least one Neutral
response, but no Negative responses.

To be classified as Disengaged:
• Add together the percent of survey respondents who gave at least one negative
response to the Level of Engagement items on the survey.
• These employees gave at least one “Disagree” and/or “Strongly Disagree”
response.

For example, in the sample table below:
• To calculate the Employee Engagement Index, look at the percent of respondents in the
Engaged group. These respondents gave a Strongly Agree and/or Agree response to all
Level of Engagement items.
• The Employee Engagement Index in Year 1 is 38%.
• The Employee Engagement Index in Year 2 is 47%.
• The percent of Engaged employees increased from 38% to 47% from Year 1 to Year
2. Therefore, the Employee Engagement Change Index is +9%.

  • 3. Do you measure employee engagement? Do you monitor engagement from year-to-year? • Most companies conduct an annual Employee Engagement Survey. • Between surveys, actions are taken to improve engagement. • Do those actions have an impact on engagement? One option to monitor change is to create an Employee Engagement Index • This Index uses the Level of Engagement items on your Employee Engagement Survey. • You can calculate the Employee Engagement Index for each year. • This is the percent of respondents who are “Engaged.” • You can also calculate the Employee Engagement Change Index. • This number indicates the change in percent Engaged from one year to the next. ©2020 Sheila Margolis 4

Level of Engagement items • Level of Engagement items on the survey measure the degree of engagement of each survey respondent. • These items do not measure the drivers of engagement. • Go to these links for more information on what is meant by Employee Engagement and Level of Engagement items. ©2020 Sheila Margolis 5
  • 6. To calculate the Employee Engagement Index, first, look at your survey options • Typically, in a Likert scale, there are five possible responses to each item on the survey. ©2020 Sheila Margolis 6
  • 7. Calculate three percentages • Based on each person’s survey responses (keep names anonymous), classify each respondent in one of these three categories: • 1) Engaged, • 2) Responsive to Engagement (or Passive), or • 3) Disengaged. • Once you’ve identified the number of respondents in each category, you can tabulate the percent of survey respondents for each category. ©2020 Sheila Margolis 7

To be classified as Engaged: • Add together the percent of survey respondents who gave only Favorable responses to all of the Level of Engagement items on the survey. • These employees gave a “Strongly Agree” and/or “Agree” response to each of the Level of Engagement items. • The respondent gave no neutral or negative response to any of the Level of Engagement items. ©2020 Sheila Margolis 8
  • 9. To be classified as Responsive to Engagement (Passive): • Calculate the percent of respondents who gave at least one Neutral response, but no Negative responses. ©2020 Sheila Margolis 9

To be classified as Disengaged: • Add together the percent of survey respondents who gave at least one negative response to the Level of Engagement items on the survey. • These employees gave at least one “Disagree” and/or “Strongly Disagree” response. % Disengaged At least one ©2020 Sheila Margolis 10
  • 11. For example, in the sample table below: • To calculate the Employee Engagement Index, look at the percent of respondents in the Engaged group. These respondents gave a Strongly Agree and/or Agree response to all Level of Engagement items. • The Employee Engagement Index in Year 1 is 38%. • The Employee Engagement Index in Year 2 is 47%. • The percent of Engaged employees increased from 38% to 47% from Year 1 to Year 2.
