7. Challenges faced by International
Candidates
7
You are
A Non-US citizen and don’t have a SSN.
SSN is not required in Colorado, Montana, Wisconsin, Illinois & Guam.
You do not have 150 credit hours
A typical 4-year bachelor degree gives 120 credit hours. Indian 3 year B Com gives you 90
points (unless you are a first class grad getting 30 points extra). Each year of education in
Acc. as Major adds up 30 points to your graduation. So typically an MBA (Fin) or an M Com
has 150 points enough to be eligible. At present GUAM & Montana are the only states which
accepts 120 points to write CPA exams.
Candidates need to understand that 150 hour is the standard for all accounting students
graduated from the US, and therefore, the state board is simply asking you to match that
standard.
A Better Option for plain BComs: If you are a 3 yrs B Com, and ready to put some extra effort,
do a 1 year Diploma in Accounting making up for the 30 credit hours while preparing for
CPA.
