He was born to a poor Assamese peasants family
of Hajo, near Guwahati, on April 24, 1888. He
studied at Cotton Collegiate School in Gauhati(now
Guwahati) and completed his matriculation in 1905.
He then joined Presidency College, affiliated with
the University of Calcutta, and completed his post
graduation in organic chemistry from Dhaka
University in 1911. He joined the Indian National
Congress in the 1920s and participated in the Non-
Cooperation Movement. In 1926, he was appointed
Joint-Secretary of the Reception Committee of the
Pandu session of the Indian National Congress. In
1930, he was elected President of the Assam
Provincial Congress.

Gautam Buddha was his maiden literary work followed by a short

a collection of poems called Sindhu Upatyaka. His translation
of Bairagya Shataka won him the Odisha Sahitya Akademi award. He
had received a Sahitya Akademi award for translating all the novels of
