This presentation describes Computer Based Test (CBT) and its benefits. Different CBT environments are illustrated and different CBT question types are itemized. Common challenges when writing CBT and how to handle them are also discussed.
6. Computer
Computer is an electronic programmable machine for
accepting, storing and processing data. Typically,
computer performs four basic operations: it accepts
data, processes/manipulates the data, outputs
information, and stores data and information.
Computer is designed to perform human-oriented
tasks faster and easily with the help of application
software.

8. Assessment or Test
Assessment or test is a way of discovering (usually by
questions or practical activities), judging and
documenting (usually in measurable terms) what
someone knows or can do based on predefined
behavioural objectives. It is a process of measuring
someone’s knowledge, skill, attitudes and beliefs.

11. Computer-Based Test (CBT)
CBT is any form of assessment or evaluation
(formative or summative assessment) that is
conducted electronically with the use of information
technology. CBT may be conducted on a stand-alone
computer or on a computer network (over an intranet
or the Internet).
CBT, unlike Paper-Based Test (PBT), is a form of
electronic assessment, whose conduct and grading
requires little or no human effort.

12. Benefits of CBT
Examination conduct with computer has advantages
over the traditional Paper-Based Test (PBT) method,
ranging from improved efficiency to cost-
effectiveness. The benefits include:
Faster scoring, reporting, and access to results.
Accuracy, consistency and reliability of results. It
provides uniformly precise scores for test-takers.
Test-takers can edit their answers on screen during
the exam without wasting ink or paper.

13. Benefits of CBT Cont’d
The test is easy to understand and the timer and hint
functions [in some exams] allow test-takers to get
the best from their exam performance.
In some listening tests, the use of headphones for
the listening elements of tests mean that examinees
can adjust the volume to suit individual needs.
Examiners and examinees don’t need ink and paper,
so it saves cost.

15. CBT Question Types
Multiple choice objective questions are common in
most Computer-Based Assessments, but computer
can also be used to assess candidates using some
other advanced types of questions such as:

17. CBT Skills & Tools
You need writing skill and writing materials to write a
Paper-Based Test (PBT); to write a Computer-Based
Test, all you need is a basic digital literacy skill to
handle some computer peripherals including
computer keyboard, mouse, and earphone [in listening
tests].

29. Handling Common Challenges
Exam Tension – just don’t be worried, be
courageous. Anxiety cannot do you any good, it will
only fail you.
Lack of understanding of computer operations –
acquire basic skills before you go into exam hall.
Failure of the computer or some of its peripherals,
such as the keyboard and mouse – report to the
technician in the exam hall or the invigilator without
fear.

30. Conclusion
CBT is an easy and a quicker way of assessing
candidates’ knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs.
Proficiency in writing Computer-Based Tests only
requires basic computer literacy skill which many
candidates fail to acquire before entering exam hall.
To pass any exam, including CBT, preparation,
courage and attention to details of instructions are
crucial. Therefore, learn and prepare with courage!
