"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" - Albert Einstein As you may agree, internet has increasingly become a destination for us rather than a useful tool. We refer to internet through commercial brands (Facebook, Google, Twitter etc.). Is this where we want to be after 20 years of internet? There is more to internet than liking, posting, searching, following and linking. In this talk I take a look back to 70's where most of today's technological IT innovations were initiated. We discuss the internet ideals and why crowd-based innovations survive while larger companies find it difficult to deal with the real world. There is a reason for 75% of all websites worldwide to be running on an open source software (Apache). And there is a reason for ground breaking innovations in medicine to be coming from regular people and groups of amateurs and not pharmaceutical companies. We always have a choice when it comes to using internet. We can only enable change if we make different choices. That is why it is time to reboot the way we experience internet and this time around, make a difference!

Presentation for Canadian startup company Eventmobi (http://www.eventmobi.com/). They are visiting Iceland this september 2014 and are located in Reykavík University. This presentation introduced some startups including my own, Betware which is not so much of a startup any more. I also introduce three companies that are members of the Icelandic gaming industry (IGI), CCP makers of the successful EVEOnline, Plain Vanilla markers of the rocket growth game Quizup and finally Skema Education which is about teaching programming to kids. The clip shown is from founder Rakel Sölvadóttir's TEDx lecture. Then I talk about my work at RU and in particular some concepts from my New Technology course on technology trends. The Future World is a presentation by Sasha Kazantseva first done at the Woman Development Forum in Guernsey. Sasha explores the technology trends of the past 300 years and the implications for the future. We live in a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world where the main currency is ideas and innovation and the most important investment you can make if you. Sasha blogs at www.startupme.co Sasha is a Guernsey resident technology entrepreneur, angel investor and NED. She set up her first venture in school aged 16 and the entrepreneurial spark never left her. Since then she has worked for Google, L'Oreal and Priceline, co-founded a private start-up accelerator, a green activist group in Russia and launched a mobile game for iOS. At Google, Sasha created or co-founded global award winning campaigns such as the Google Cultural Institute and a big data predictor algorithm for competitions. She is passionate about supporting and promoting startup ecosystems and is involved with projects in Guernsey as a director with Start Up Guernsey, committee member of Creative Industries. She has lived and worked in Singapore, Thailand, Mongolia, Russia, UK and Spain and holds a BSc from the London School of Economics and an MBA from INSEAD. As an advocate of social media I can (and do) wax lyrical about the potential of the digital spaces that provide prospective place(s) to listen, interact and learn. For many the affordances have enabled opportunities to extend networks, helped to build meaningful connections and nurtured personal relationships (often at a distance). The immediacy and open interactivity of these spaces have unlocked alternative ways to communicate and collaborate that can also remove spatial and time-oriented constraints. They enable and encourage the use of multimedia communication through images, video and audio to augment the written words we may choose to share. However, as much as open listening and sharing can be considered as liberating and empowering, there can be (and are) unintended as well as intended consequences. This keynote will explore why it is vital that we all consider the implications of our public digital interactions - from the data we share; what we say or don't say; and the significance of doing, being and becoming - and how this can impact on our sense of belonging and wellbeing.
