resources
SOIL SALINITY MANAGEMENT PLAN
• EAD conducted a 3-year soil salinity survey between 2016-2018.
• The survey included more than 4000 farms and around 16,000 soil
samples assessed for soil salinity.
• The main outcome of this survey was the development of the soil salinity
management plan for managing and reclaiming of salt-affected farms.
ABU DHABI SOIL ARCHIVING FACILITY
• Established by EAD in 2016 to benchmark with international
standards and provide vital information about changes in soil quality
over time.
• The facility currently stocks 5,000 preserved soil samples
• Archive is managed through geospatial database and linked to EAD
soil database
• Facility has the capacity to store more than 25,000 soil samples
under controlled optimal conditions to preserve their scientific value
• Create the region’s first soil spectral library.

What will your country do on the World Soil Day?
EAD CELEBRATES WORLD SOIL DAY
ANNUALLY.
This year, EAD will celebrate by launching the UAE soil map
using WRB
This year’s event will be under the patronage of HE Minister
of Climate Change and Environment and will be used to
promote EAD’s efforts in protecting land and soil to its
attendees from the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

ABU DHABI SOIL QUALITY MONITORING
AND ASSESSMENT PROGRAM 2018-2020
ISO 16133:2018
To assess the impact of man-made activities on land and soil
resources and provide the basis for future land management
plans, protection policies and soil related regulations.
278 sites are monitored with more than 600 samples collected
annually from industrial, residential and agricultural land uses.
SOIL QUALITY MAPPING USING DRONES, AI,
AND REMOTE SENSING
A project is being undertaken to greatly improve the accuracy and
efficiency of soil contamination monitoring and management using
the latest in remote sensing and AI technology,. The project uses
hyperspectral sensors mounted on drones or satellite
hyperspectral images to map the levels of contaminants using AI.

EAD Enviro portal - Soil
Database
Online information system was
developed in 2009 that links to
the comprehensive soil database
that resulted from survey
information collection activities.
The system displays all the maps
produced during EAD surveys,
with the powerful functionality of
allowing a user to view particular
locations of interest and extract
data related to all the map units
and observation sites described
during the survey.

ISO 16133:2018: SOIL QUALITY - GUIDANCE ON
THE ESTABLISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF
MONITORING PROGRAMMES
The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi is the first organization
in the MEA region to receive international certification for
the monitoring of soil quality programmes.
Pillar 1 – Promote sustainable management of soil resources for soil protection, conservation and sustainable productivity. Reference http://www.fao.org/global-soil-partnership/pillars-action/1-soil-management/en/
Abu Dhabi Soil Archiving Facility, was established by EAD in 2016 to benchmark with international standards and provide vital information about changes in soil quality over time. Offering both time- and cost-efficient soil sampling, the facility currently stocks 5,000 preserved soil samples available to relevant stakeholders for research purposes. The archiving facility has the capacity to store more than 25,000 soil samples under controlled optimal conditions to preserve their scientific value. EAD is utilizing the stored samples to create the region’s first soil spectral library. managed through geospatial database
and linked to EAD soil database
EAD conducted a 3-year soil salinity survey between 2016-2018. The survey included more than 4000 farms and around 16,000 soil samples assessed for soil salinity.
The main outcome of this survey was the development of the soil salinity management plan for managing and reclaiming of salt-affected farms. The Soil Management Plan (SMP) lists the general principles for the best use of groundwater resources, and the maintenance and improvement of soil resources.
Pillar 2 – Encourage investment, technical cooperation, policy, education, awareness and extension in soil. Reference http://www.fao.org/global-soil-partnership/pillars-action/2-awareness-raising/en/
Pillar 3 – Promote targeted soil research and development focusing on identified gaps, priorities and synergies with related productive, environmental and social development actions. Reference http://www.fao.org/global-soil-partnership/pillars-action/3-research/en/
Pillar 3 – Promote targeted soil research and development focusing on identified gaps, priorities and synergies with related productive, environmental and social development actions. Reference http://www.fao.org/global-soil-partnership/pillars-action/3-research/en/
Investigation of soil contamination can be time consuming, costly and hazardous. Monitoring methods that can be deployed robustly and remotely (through drone or satellite data capture), can save the need for field inspections, and help to focus and target clean up operations.
Pillar 4 – information and data. Reference http://www.fao.org/global-soil-partnership/pillars-action/4-information-data/en/
Pillar 5 – harmonization of methods, measurements and indicator for the sustainable management and protection of soil resources. Reference http://www.fao.org/global-soil-partnership/pillars-action/5-harmonization/en/
The Environmental Agency obtained compliance to ISO 16133: 2018 standard from the British Standards Institution (BSI) in the Middle East and Africa, after a successful audit of the agency’s soil quality monitoring programme and its soil database of Abu Dhabi.
Identify the environmental testing capabilities in Abu Dhabi
2. Compare the results of Abu Dhabi labs with other labs from UAE and the Australian lab used by EAD
3. Identify the gaps of testing with respect to EAD guideline.
4. Identify the applicability of the limits as specified by EAD guideline.
5. Support Abu Dhabi labs to get / maintain the accreditation.
6. Identify the needs for reference labs for high-risk elements.
