The World Bank launched the interactive Mapping for Results (M4R) platform in
October 2010 as part of its new Policy on Access to Information and building on
the success of the Open Data initiative and. The initiative visualizes the location
of World Bank projects to better monitor project and impact on people; to
enhance transparency and social accountability; and to enable citizens and other
stakeholders to provide direct feedback.
By the 2011 Bank Spring Meetings an experienced team of researchers have geo-
coded more than 16,000 locations for more than 1200 Bank activities. The Bank
has released maps of these sub-national locations for all 79 IDA countries. For
select countries, the platform provides disaggregated poverty and human
development data, for example infant mortality rates, maternal health, and
malnutrition, that can combined with geographic information of Bank activities
at the sub-national level.

In accordance with the Bank’s Access to Information policy, all sub-national
geographic datasets are openly and freely available though the open data website
(http://data.worldbank.org). Researchers, application developers, development
practitioners have easy access to M4R data to carry out analysis, develop
applications, and ‘mash-up’ Bank data sets with other externally available data.
