Having worked for 30 years in the industry I have gained valuable experience as a designer using

6. The Design Mechanics
[Started January 2015 to January 2018]
As Senior Designer at The Design Mechanics I
was responsible for creating Responsive Web
Design, Branding, Brochures, POS
and Packaging.
The clients were varied from small to medium size
business’s who specialise in Textiles, Fashion,
Chartered Accountancy, Cleaning Products and
Anti Slip Flooring etc.
Smiffys
[Started March 2009 to January 2015]
For 6 years I worked for Smiffy’s as a
Senior Designer.
My role was varied and involved working on Large
Format Graphics, Shop Windows, Exhibitions,
Brochures, Branding, Logos, Advertising, Art
Direction on Photo shoots, POS and Packaging.
With the departure of the studio manager I
assumed his role for more than a year and was
responsible for the work schedule. I dealt with all
work coming in, briefing it to a team of 6 designers
and general running of the studio making sure
deadlines were met.
Smiffys had a team of 6 Designers and
Artworkers, 4 Retouchers and 8 Fashion
Designers whom work closely on Internal
Branding, Catalogue Work, Advertising and
Costume Design.
We also owned licenses for many brands such
as Michael Jackson, Smurfs, Sesame Street,
Flash Gordon, Beano, Mr Men, Thunder Birds,
Shrek and many more. Aldi, Asda and Hamleys
are just three of our external clients for whom we
design packaging, costumes, Window and internal
graphics and tableware etc.
Freelance
[Started November 2008 to February 2009]
For a period of time I became a
Freelance Designer.
During this time I was lucky enough to do some
creative work for O2 including photoshop work
and illustration. I enjoyed this blue chip work very
much and the freedom they allowed me.
Rare
[Started March 2005 to November 2008]
I held the position of Senior Creative Designer
at Rare in Sheffield for 3 years and I worked
on a diverse client base from Transport to
Electronics and from Universities to Floor Heating
manufacturers.
Working from the pad to the mac I was
responsible for producing creative concepts and
taking the job through every stage to completion.
Branding, Adverts, Exhibitions, Literature,
Brochures, Packaging, Direct Mail and Web
Design are all part of my everyday work which
I enjoy very much. I produced items for the
Universities of Leeds and Sheffield, South
Yorkshire Transport, Tarmac, Beach Hut Leisure,
Polypipe, ASD Architectural, Outokumpu,
Bebida and many more.
PJA Marketing
[Started January 2004 to May 2005]
PJA was based in Sheffield and the company
consisted of 12 Designers/Artworkers.
I was responsible for all the creative work
produced, sourcing printers and getting quotes.
Their main client was Kingspan Insulation and the
work was varied from Mailers and Advertising to
Brochures and Corporate ID.
Outside the Box
[May 2000 to December 2003]
Outside the Box is a company situated in
Headingley, Leeds and at the time was 30 strong.
It had offices in London and Birmingham as
well as Leeds.
My role was Senior Creative producing concepts,
illustrations and finished artwork.
My favourite piece of work for Outside the Box
was a brand launch for JoJo’s Ice cream Toppers
which was produced for Monkhill Confectionery,
part of Cadbury Schweppes. I developed and
illustrated 6 characters and packaging designs
which were sold into major supermarkets such as
Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons etc through a
tease campaign. I was also involved in designing
a website, storyboarding a TV advert, directing live
action, animation and a voice over.
Outside the Box’s clients were Airfix, B. Braun
Surgical Instruments, ISA International,
Argos Business Solutions, Abbey, Compaq and
Wedgwood etc.
Charter Design
[March 1998 to April 2000]
Charter Design were a small Agency of eight
people. They were based in Roberttown near
to Huddersfield and produced mainly below the
line design work such as Corporate Brochures,
Packaging, Exhibition Stands, Corporate Identity
and a small amount of Advertising.
Charter’s client base was varied and consisted of
Halifax Building Society, Morrisons Supermarket,
Supercook, Royal Doulton, Biwater and
Bairds Menswear.
Paradigm Network Ltd
[July 1994 to March 1998]
Previous to Charter I worked for a company called
Paradigm that later became Dig For Fire.
My responsibilities were producing Campaign
Ideas and Concepts including Headlines,
Brochures, Literature, Mailers, Corporate Identity
and Advertising.
The clients were American Golf, Travis Perkins
Builders Merchants, First Mainline Buses, Cellhire
Mobile Phones, North Derbyshire Tec, Caradon
Ideal and Radio Hallam.
John Hogg Design
[August 1990 to June 1994]
John Hogg Graphic Design in Sheffield was
a small company where I held the position of
Designer. I was responsible for creating designs
and concepts for Brochures, Packaging,
Corporate Identity and Advertising.
Using Freehand, Quark XPress and Photoshop
I worked hard to find appropriate practical and
original design solutions for our clients which
consisted of Jetlag International Limited, Record
Tools, UK Tools, Prospec and Impulse Computers.
The Publicity Bureau
[June 1989 to August 1990]
In 1989 I went to work for a company called The
Publicity Bureau. Here my position was Creative
Designer/Visualiser.
Whilst working at The Publicity Bureau I
contributed to a team of Designers, Visualisers
and Artworkers to produce Advertising
Campaigns, Point of sale, Corporate Identity
and Literature.
Our main clients at this time were Northern
Upholstery, DFS and Lambert Smith Hampton.
